UPDATE: New characters may be summoned into the current events of the RP with no prior knowledge or reason for being there. As of now our heroes have discovered hidden traps and stone guardians at the heart of a colossal forest in the middle of nowhere. Their leader has betrayed them and now lies unconscious. There is no way to go back; the forest has confused the trail behind them. There are several devices hidden throughout the masked ruins, one of which may summon assistance from across the continent.

In other words, we're looking for new players! :)

A Crumpled Letter Arrives

You’ve just received a letter from Kettle, an old acquaintance of yours. She is an anthropologist, a painter, a scholar of mythology and the founder of the Potoo Preservation Association; she has traveled to every corner of the planet, and claims friendship with quite a few talented and curious people. Several of those prominent acquaintances might have received the same sort of letter -- typed by a faulty typewriter on the back of a menu for the wild and remote Blunderbuss Cafe, delivered in a wax-sealed envelope by a dubious messenger -- which read thusly:

Salutations! It has been quite awhile since we’ve spoken, hasn’t it? I do hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits; and if it does not, I hope to brighten your day just a tad with this note. I believe myself to be on the cusp of a revolutionary discovery, one that may shatter the current boundaries of scientific possibility, and I’d like you to be a part of it. You’ll find me at the reverse location on the fifth of March, if you’re up for a bit of fame and fortune. Please tell no one where you’re going, and use the utmost secrecy in your travels. Watch out for magpies. Yours, Kettle

Concept

This is a fantasy sandbox RP with a plot woven into the background. The characters are anticipated to go on an expedition to uncharted ruins, which could be the remains of a legendary city sought for centuries by explorers. Kettle is being uncharacteristically secretive about it, however, and has sent cryptic invitations by private courier instead of enlisting the help of the locals. She is not the only one seeking the ruins, and her every move is being watched.

Guidelines

The Setting: This world is not Earth. It is primarily fantasy, but there is no magic. Most of the world sees little need for more than tents and fire pits, while the more developed cities enjoy steampunk-like technology levels. Players are encouraged to develop the world around their characters -- to create environments, creatures, and societies that affect their characters' backstories -- as long as the players remain aware that any worldbuilding may or may not be used in the RP. During character creation, the GM might make suggestions for characters to further tie them into the plot and to the setting.

The Gameplay: For Every Action There Is An Equal And Opposite Reaction. This game is based on exploration, investigation, interaction, and mystery. In order to get the most out of the game, the character must be observant, goal-oriented, and willing to act in order to meet those goals. Everything -- everything -- is a potential plot-changer, from a light in the distance to a passing comment by an NPC. It is up to the PC to pick up on important clues in the scene, to make their own conclusions, and to act upon those conclusions. How the PCs act and react determines the course of the story. Every post shall be a step forward; characters who wait for something to happen to them will be standing in the same place for a very long while.

The Characters: All characters start out acquainted with Kettle and with at least one other character. Players are encouraged to be creative with this, and to make enemies as well as friends, idols, and rivals. Characters may come from any type of environment or society (tribe, village, prison, palace, city) which is up to you to describe. Non-human characters are welcome, as long as they are of a commonly recognizable race. No character shall have any magical abilities whatsoever.

Character Creation

During gameplay, characters will always surprise you: they'll make decisions you never expected, they'll whip out skills you didn't know they had, they'll get into all sorts of trouble you never anticipated during the CS phase. Therefore, players are encouraged to keep their sheets simple and open-ended.

(The character sheet has been adjusted for new characters who will not have been with the expedition from the beginning)

NAME:

ABSTRACT:

Write one sentence to define your character.

DETAIL:
Tell us anything and everything about your character.

Some Thoughts

Inspirations for this RP come as far and wide as H.P. Lovecraft, Myst, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, Avatar TLA and Korra, Tolkien, Marvel, FIASCO, Mushi-Shi, Firefly . . . Essentially the world and setting is a soup of whatever I think is awesome. When thinking of the world your character grew up in, just go with whatever you think is awesome, with a technology cap of steampunk level (anything below that is just fine).

A lot of the made-up creatures in this RP will probably use the Avatar style of creature mash-up: dogotters, hawkcats, lionlizards, duckpandas. Feel free to do the same if you're making creatures. Mystical animals are available for mashups too, but again keep in mind the no-magic rule when developing pets.

NAME: Jazzle Finks (Aka Jazz). He's a goblin.

ABSTRACT:
An obsessive tinkerer, dreamer, and an idealist with a pride that outgrows his stature.

INTENT:
To satisfy his curiousity for all that clicks, ticks, buzzes, or otherwise clanks. Would like to build an understanding of the world, and use this knowledge to leave his own mark.

FIRST ADVENTURE:
Jazzle is a part of a tribe of goblins that exist just outside the city border. They were scavengers, who etched a living out of the scraps thrown out of the developed city's borders. Jazz was inspired by the many gadgets and other bits and bobs the people threw away, and eventually his curiosity got the better of him as he found himself in the heart of the largest city in the continent. To the mind of a goblin who previously led a simple life in the slums it was mind blowing, and lead to a career of mischief and larceny all in the name of his burning curiosity. Goblins and humans have a tenuous relationship at best.

HOW DO YOU KNOW KETTLE?
To put it frank.. Jazzle once stole an expensive watch from the worldly traveler. It had such a pleasant tick, he just HAD to see what made it figuratively and literally tick. A long chase, painful bumps and bruises and a serious scalding had made the young thief get a change of career. No hard feelings!

WHY DID KETTLE PICK YOU?
Jazz figures out how things work. He can take things apart, inspect every insignificant detail, and put it back together new and improved. He is an innovator with fierce determination.

HOW DO YOU KNOW [insert character name]?
No other characters exist yes. I will wait for it.

I tried to keep it brief and sweet. What do you think?

You make a good point. Combat happens whether you plan for it or not. I should edit that. Thanks!

Combat oriented characters are not forbidden, it's just a warning that they might be bored when there's nothing to smash.

I am setting up a situation where humans and goblins traditionally hate each other. I like to think Jazzle and Kettle eventually became friends and got over their prejudice, but I imagine it would be a point of contention going through the story. Goblins are a rarity inside of the city, and the few that are around are slave, illegal stowaways, or in rather rare cases secondary citizens. Outside of the city walls and the reach of authority they are more in control.

At least that's my head canon, I am open to talking it out.

@WatermelonTango I like it. If the other players agree to play to it, Jazzle would have a lot to overcome. But just the fact that Kettle extended this invitation must mean a lot in this case.

Don't get too ahead of yourself though! This is just the interest check, and it could still fall flat altogether. ;)

I'm gonna start writing for an Artist character, down in his luck and looking for that spark once again. Seems really, really cool.

NAME: Ignace Karkasy

ABSTRACT:Living in reality, expressing in the aether.

INTENT:To find material for Art and even deeper to find the driving spark that influences all art.

FIRST ADVENTURE: Ignace was born to a rich family, so materials and money were never a concern. His first 'adventure' was to a downtrodden part of the city he lived in, which inspired his first poem,"Amongst them". It was at this point when Ignace realized he couldn't just be a drawer and painter. He had to be a true artist, expressing himself everyway possible. Poems, songs, paintings, sculptures, all of these fill Ignace's repertoire.

HOW DO YOU KNOW KETTLE? Kettle commissioned Ignace to paint a portrait for him, however Ignace felt that the painting was too good, and that he had enjoyed painting it so much that he refuse to accept payment for it. The beauty and truth of expression was payment enough.

WHY DID KETTLE PICK YOU? Kettle knows Ignace is the kind of person that could immortalize a great adventure

HOW DO YOU KNOW JAZZ? Ignace met Jazz during an expedition to the next town over, accompanying Kettle. Kettle had to pass through the town and it gave Ignace his first experience outside of his own town. He ended up sculpting the kerfuffle that occurred between the two, Kettle's arm outstretched while the goblin attempted to shield his face. The small sculpture sits on Ignace's mantle to this day.

I am very interested! Custom races are allowed yes? (By custom I mean a slightly visually different variation of a Harpy) I'm thinking of going with my Alchemy/Herbalist character.

NAME: Bishop Forthwind Cedany

ABSTRACT:
A kindly old priest who yearns to spread his knowledge to the youths and explore the world he has yet to see.

INTENT:
To die knowing he made some sort of difference in the world.

FIRST ADVENTURE:
Forthwind's first adventure happened when he was a much younger man than he is today. He was in his mid-twenties and had just gotten married to his now deceased wife, Rohesia. While Forthwind was more of a bookworm at that time and would have preferred to stay indoors, Rohesia was a keen explorer and practically forced Forthwind out of the house. They explored a cave nearby the small cottage they had bought. They were surprised to find a herd of Purdos, essentially dog-sized rats living down there. The Purdos did not take kindly to the intrusion. While Forthwind attempted to help by swatting the large stick he had used for walking, he was ultimately unneeded as Rohesia quickly disposed of the Purdos with a few quick slashes with her sword. He returned excited for their next adventure.

HOW DO YOU KNOW KETTLE?
Forthwind met Kettle on a rather stormy night a few years ago. He and Rohesia had just been to see one of the most exquisite plays and were riding home to their cottage in a carriage. They encountered Kettle trudging through mud, soaked through to the bone. Of course, Forthwind and Rohesia were far too kindly to let the girl travel on an unsafe, wet, dark road in the middle of nowhere. They let her travel with them in the carriage and even gave her a place to stay in their empty room for the night. Forthwind and Rohesia were amazed to hear of Kettle's tales and of all the people she had met. After Rohesia had went to bed Forthwind and Kettle discussed more topics that Forthwind found interesting, such as religion, books and philosophy. Suffice to say, Forthwind and Rohesia found her a very charming young lady.

WHY DID KETTLE PICK YOU?
Forthwind has been known to convince and get on with just about anyone. Along with this, he is also a cunning linguist and knows a few languages that may help if any locals were to stumble upon the group.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IGNACE?
Forthwind met Ignace after commissioning a statue of his church's god, Lofian in Forthwind's church. Forthwind admired Ignace's ability and creativity and ended up talking to him a lot of the time when Ignace was supposed to be working. This annoyed some of the other priests in the church but Forthwind jokingly assured Ignace that procastination was not a sin.

Hi there! Hrrm hmmm hummm . . . y'know, I can't think of a very good reason to disallow this. So, yes, sure, absolutely, go for it. ;) I suppose I will edit the rules, then!

Yo Mokley! I'm interested in this RP for sure! Methinks I need to think of a character though...

Hey there! Of course, by all means stick around! A character would be a nice thing to have, but not entirely necessary to hang out, I suppose. ;)

@Mr_pink Brilliant character! So far it seems we could very much benefit from such a man of wisdom.

I will shortly be working on the OOC. Once I get some sugar into my system.

@TheWildHost The idea of Kettle and Jazz's squabble being immortalized as a statue is an incredibly amusing one. I approve.

I like how this group is rounding out. @drewccapp and/or @orangebox If you want to, pm me with a character idea. I am still looking to insert something in my missing field, and it might make it easier to integrate you guys when you do make your characters.

Being a huge fan of both Mushishi and Kino's Journey, my character as a herbalist/alchemist is actually inspired very much by how Ginko is always travelling with his box of goodies.

@Mokley If you don't mind the simple-ish art of Kino's Journey - the narrative is actually pretty thought provoking! I hope you'll enjoy the series as much as I did ^^

I'll pop my character in when I wake up. (It's 11am here and I have not slept yet as I was rushing for my final assignments...) Say, approximately 8-10 hours XD
