Overall, the Spanish military maintains one of the highest civilian to military personnel ratios in Europe. Spain's military has over 500,000 soldiers serving in the active military, and 200,000 in reserves. Meaning, overall, Spain enlists a whooping 720,000 (roughly) people into its armed forces. This fact can be attributed to the exponential rise in nationalism after the ending of the third of the World Wars. Combine this with the Spanish people's insecurity caused by the recent rise of authoritarian governments and rumors of terrorist threats within Spain's borders, and you have the perfect cocktail for the beginnings of a militarily focused nation.

The Spanish military boasts an abnormally high military budget. Where does most of that money go? Research. Spain claims to be on the razor's edge of military research in the areas of personal body armor. You see, Spanish scientist Fernando Arteta discovered a means of mass producing spider silk. By combining the DNA of a common goat and the Golden Orb spider, Arteta was able to birth a goat with the ability to produce spider silk instead of milk. Hundreds of thousands of these goats were created, and the cross breeding of species was perfected to the point where entire spider silk goat farms have been built. This spider silk has replaced kevlar within the Spanish military; aside from being ultralight and flexible, pound for pound the silk is ten times as strong as kevlar. The Spaniards have done away with ceramic plates and instead chosen to replace them with ballistic foams of their own design.

Designed by the Americans, the Spanish bought the exosuits in bulk back in 2040. These suits come equipped with a number of different features, including: enhanced strength and agility, jump packs, grappling hooks, and a battery powerful enough to last a full week. The suit is lightweight and can be folded up to fit inside a briefcase or backpack.

The Spanish infantry's loadout is rounded out with the most important piece of technology Spain has developed in years: the medical gauntlet. A piece of machinery designed to fit around the wrist, the medi-gauntlet functions as a medkit and emergency field dress device simple enough for anyone to use with only basic training required. The gauntlet contains tiny spouts that shoot microscopic jets of water into the skin. Inside this water is contained a number of chemicals which act as a pain reliever, as well as temporarily speeding up one's natural healing factor. When a soldier is wounded, they only have to press a button on the gauntlet and they'll receive a powerful shot of morphine, and their body will begin to clot the wound at a rapid pace. The gauntlet can also be used to administer a medical foam, which plugs up wounds artificially to prevent extensive blood loss.

The modern Spanish soldier is equipped with a soft exosuit, a suit of full body spider silk armor alongside state of the art ballistic foam plates, and medi-gauntlets. Said loadout is enhanced by holo-finders within the helmets, which give the soldier a heads up display linked back to their base of operations. The holo-finder can also be linked up to a soldier's firearm to enhance one's aim. This is especially useful for snipers, who come equipped with a modified holo-finder as standard gear.

Aside from infantry technology, Spain lacks much to set it apart from the rest of the European Union. They use standard Main Battle Tanks as the backbone of the armored portion of their forces. Railguns have become the standard means of delivering artillery, on the ground and at sea. In the air the Spanish Empire mostly relies on old 5th generation fighter tech, and are only experimenting with energy weapons, lasers, and railguns on their fighters. They lack many combat drones, although they do possess a number of aerial reconnaissance drones that utilize stealth technologies common to Western air forces.

In the year 2016, a group of terrorists appeared in Leon, Spain. They wore Portuguese uniforms, spoke in Portuguese, and even looked like they were natives of Portugal. These terrorists attacked the citizens of Leon, killing people in the streets and blowing up hospitals. The Spanish military moved in and killed the terrorists but the damage had been done. Spain was furious at Portugal. The Portuguese government, none the wiser, had no idea what was going on. Hostilities grew between the two nations as armies shuffled closer to the borders. As tensions mounted, the international community called for peace talks between President Salva and King Felipe VI. The leaders agreed, and met in a neutral location to discuss the attacks and find out who the true culprits were.

Peace talks began to break down as the terrorist cell began inciting riots and civilian mobs began fighting in the streets of Lisbon and Madrid. The terrorists launched a second attack, this time on Lisbon, and instead attacked military installations. Portugal was led to believe this attack was Spain's retaliation for the Leon Massacre, and peace talks began to break down. Things were brought to a head when a Portuguese general murdered a Spanish diplomat in a bar fight turned brutal homicide. Spanish intelligence confirmed the general had no connection to any known terror groups and took this information as confirmation that Portugal was trying to incite a war.

In the year 2018, King Felipe VI declared war on all of Portugal for their brutal attacks on the Spanish people. Portugal responded in kind, and armies clashed. Spain greatly outnumbered Portugal, and the war would be short fought. With superior numbers and technology the Spanish overwhelmed the Portuguese in less than six months. Casualties mounted, and the President of Portugal began to become desperate. Salva ordered the assassination of the Spanish monarch. Portuguese special forces carried the attack out, killing the entire royal family in their own home. The Spanish people decided to return the favor, and the President of Portugal died in a house fire started by Spanish citizens of Portugal in response to the attack. With both leaders dead, the terrorists made their move. The charismatic Jose Banos de Espana, a political genius and general in the Spanish army, declared that he was a blood relative of the deceased royal family. With near perfectly forged documents, Banos tricked the Spanish government into believing his lies and he was crowned King of Spain within a matter of weeks. Banos led the Spanish military into Lisbon and forced the Portuguese to surrender.

With Portugal under his thumb, Banos set out to repair the damage Spain and Portugal sustained during the war. It took years, but eventually the signs of war would fade and Spain would grow stronger because of it. With the wounds of war now cleaned, Banos started to improve the country. Focusing primarily on the military, Banos poured his heart and soul into the defense of his homeland. Nationalism campaigns proved a massive success and brought in an influx of recruits into the armed forces. Military research became the top priority of Spain's scientific community. The weapon's industry became to evolve more rapidly as a consequence, and Spain became a regional leader in military advancement.

Banos' efforts turned out to be vital. When the Third World War began, Spain decided to shore up its defenses and wait the conflict out. As nations fell and the clouds of war rolled over the land, Spain stood as a fortress against the darkness. When Andorra, the small neighbor to Spain's north, became embroiled in a brutal civil war that claimed the lives of thousands, Spain decided to open the gates. An army marched forth from Madrid and attacked the country, destroying both the rebels as well as the government forces in the process. The Spanish conquered Andorra, setting their flag in the rubble. Of course, this action caused much controversy. In an effort to regain national popularity, Banos declared the return of the Spanish empire of old. Claiming himself the Emperor of Spain, Banos set out to solidify his place within Spanish history. He married a beautiful woman named Isabelle, and sired a child with her.

The royal family's lineage now secure, Emperor Banos began to rule. World War Three had ended, and Spain had remained relatively neutral during the fighting. Under his rule, the country prospered more than it ever did under Felipe and his family. The economy grew, trade increased, and research was booming. With the mass production of spider silk now under full swing, Spain became a trading powerhouse. Spider silk became one of the most expensive raw resources on the market, and Spain made sure to milk the market for all it was worth.

In recent years, Banos has turned his eyes toward the world at large and seen conflict on the horizon. The Emperor decided that the decades of isolation from the world were at an end, and the age of diplomacy and politics would soon commence. Perhaps it was time that he considered allying himself with other, more powerful nations to protect himself from growing threats in Asia and the Americas.
