It's amazing what you pull out of the shadows when you look in the right place. It was 1935 when everything changed - the government expected that Hitler would be trying to insert agents into the Isles, and it was our job to make sure they never found purchase, and we found a lot of the bastards. Not just Germans, but also Russians too. But that was just the beginning. In '35 we raided the home of a suspected German operative, and what we found instead was a nightmare. Dozens of madmen rushed our agents, clawing at their faces, and when the shooting stopped then -it- showed up. It was only by luck and a lot of concentrated firepower that we managed to bring it down, and even then of twelve MI5 agents sent only two survived.
MI5 didn't screw around. We took the crippled and mutilated monster into custody, to a research facility in Cardiff. What we found was remarkable, impossible even. The creature demonstrated traits functionally identical to a monster from a horror novel from the turn of the century. We got our confirmation when we had a second case on our hands shortly thereafter - one of our agents, bitten and wounded in the course of the battle, died and rose again shortly thereafter and began a rampage across England. It was a long, bloody chase, but in the end we cornered him and destroyed him.
That was when our group was given a new mandate and a new name. We are MI-13, under orders from King and Parliament to safeguard the Kingdom from threats the world at large is unwilling to accept. To safeguard the people from these monsters and from knowledge of these monsters.
It's a complicated job, and one that the average spook isn't terribly well suited for. We've had to take to outsourcing. There's a surprising number of people scattered around who look like quacks at first glance but turn out to have real knowledge. Our first big break was when we recruited Doctor Jacob Van Meinhold, a doctor who had been laughed out of the public eye after publishing a paper regarding the depredations of a nocturnal predator on two London females around the turn of the century. Upon recruiting him he revealed that the events of Dracula were a somewhat skewed account of true events, and that he was the inspiration for Doctor Abraham Van Helsing by Stoker, another participant in the affair.
Armed with his practical knowledge of the Vampire menace, and gathering new allies daily to face the threats in the night we stood ready to safeguard England against the terrible night to come.
It's now '37. War's just around the corner, and we all know it in our guts. The trouble is that the war we'll be fighting isn't against the Nazis, it's against something a hell of a lot worse.
