I've been meaning to get a new desktop for forever. My laptop is fine but it sucks for playing games. We had an old Windows XP downstairs that some friends built for us, but obviously it is outdated.

So last night I spent five hours reading how-to-build-a-computer guides and taking apart the XP then putting it back together. Other than a broken fan it still works fine. This morning I completely disassembled all the parts and put them in boxes so I could throw the case away, because the case was cheap trash. After some research it looks like I'll probably have to get a new motherboard, even though I was hoping I wouldn't have to.

Now it's just a matter of buying the new parts and putting it all back together. The whole process was a lot simpler than I thought it would be.

You may think you're doing it on the cheap, building a whole rig... But then you buy the OS.

This can be taking care of often enough. I've only went out and bought one OS in my entire life, the rest was either borrowed (pour one out for the good ol' days) or reused.

The positive about building your own is that you can custom-chose each part that goes in, and you get more bang-for-your buck (at least as far as I can tell.). Just takes bit of work, and researching.

When I talked to my cousin about building a new computer - this back before I got my current rig - he advised against it as it doesn't offer any real advantages. Or at least to a plebian such as myself, when he got out of the Army he went into the computer world so he'd be over-all more knowledgable; but he still advised against it. Even at a cost perspective you may still have to go out and buy an operating system to run the thing on and when I was thinking of it no one had any disks for an OS laying around. And to even have it do what I wanted it to do running Win 2000 would not be an option.

So that's where I'm speaking from really.

It'll depend on your circumstances I am sure, though another reason to build your own would be to learn how to fuck with this shit. Only reason I can build computers is because my father always bought them as kits, or as individual parts, so I helped put a few together as a teen and got used to the process.

On the computer construction note at least: I disassembled the old office computer at work yesterday. The other guy I was working with at the time wanted to look physically inside the hard-drive itself before we destroy it, so it was a piece-by-piece endeavor by us to take out all the parts so we can try and find a way to get the hard-drive out in one piece. It was in its own weird-ass cradles sort of deal so I couldn't just pull it out.

They usually have slots. What did he want to look inside the hard drive for, physically? They have really cool magnets, but that is about it.

Just to see what it looked like inside because he was a curious old dude.

Ah. Well, the magnets are definitely really cool. They do magnety things.

I don't think he noticed the magnets so much as the shiny fucking disks inside it.

I'm pretty sure both Windows 7 and 8 get the free boost to Windows 10, so that might be a solution - get an old copy of Windows 7 cheaply and then just upgrade for free to 10. Cuts out the OS cost so building one's own rig becomes cheaper from a hardware perspective, plus the benefits of customisation.

Rax, one thing to look out for is just ensuring all your parts work together. Nothing worse than picking up a shiny new GPU just to find out your motherboard has the wrong chipset or some shit.

Computer hardward is so modular right now it's fucking great
and cheap at that too.
As long as you dont need to jump GPU's every gen you do fucking fantastic

Went from 560 to 970 and that jump is such a good transition for parts

I actually already have an OS that was installed on a Virtual Machine last year, and my parents paid for that, so I'm good.

I've got Windows 8.1 :D

Making sure all the parts work was my biggest worry, although I think I'll be able to use the old motherboard after all. It checks out with the processor I want but I'll have to do a little more research to make sure I get the right graphics card. Luckily it's not that old. I bought a new case and power supply today so that should arrive next week. All I need now is the new CPU. The graphics card isn't as urgent because there's a built-in one already. The hard drive is good too, I don't think I'll need to replace it.

Built-in graphics chips are really only meant to display basic visual elements, like the operating system itself and YouTube videos. Anything more strenuous than that and they give up. So, if you're interest in creating a computer suitable for playing videogames on, I'd definitely get the graphics card sorted ASAP.

It was good enough to play games before. Anyway, I'm not in a huge hurry, but the point is I'll get a new one eventually. Right now I just don't have the money.

We played things like Hunting Unlimited, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, a few Nancy Drew games, Assassin's Creed, and some DOS games.

DOS games.

Then you better get the best of the best when it comes to video cards. You might have to duct-tape two 980's together just in case.

My dad's got a box full of old Sierra DOS games in the basement. They are the real deal.
