Eh, no point worrying about it. If Skynet becomes a thing there's fuck all we can do, so may as well just enjoy the pursuit of knowledge and the brief period of time when AI makes our lives insanely awesome, and then hope to go out in a blaze of glory, AK roaring as the Terminator armies crest the horizon.

I think all the long-term problems will come later (and I think they will be fixed when they come), and that our immediate problem is making sure we transition into an AI operated society without any crazy revolutions or some shit like that. I mean, you have to consider the implications. Suddenly we don't have to work to live, and hard-work ceases being our defining moral. Social stratification will have to be based on something other than economic success, and how will that look? Will people who are on the top of the food chain be fine with a sudden reroll of the dice? What exactly will our values become?

When your plane lands, it’s not a human that decides which gate it should go to. Just like it’s not a human that determined the price of your ticket.

I read it. >_> It was very informative and interesting, but also a little sensationalist towards the end imo. Its vision of an ASI that can 'manipulate every atom on earth to its whim' seems pretty ridiculous, because intelligence doesn't allow you to supercede the laws of physics.

There is no particular reason the existence of an ASI should result in it being like "a God" to us, firstly because of the reason I just mentioned, and secondly because sheer intelligence does not include aspects such as personality, and thus no desire for dominance, competition, or even free will. An ASI does not necessarily have feelings regardless of how intelligent it is, or how competent it is even at social interaction (clinical sociopaths are famously excellent at social manipulation and yet simultaneously lack all forms of empathy) - and so why would it seek to counteract anything we ask it to do, to make decisions for us, to do any of the things people think make them a threat?

There was also a neat article about visualising the mental processes of procrastination on that site. Honestly I think it's just as worth its own thread, but I guess this already exists.
