Welcome to the Great Historical Library of the Virad in Rausten. Though many tales remain mysterious to the outside world, we Virad have done everything within our power to assemble a vast collection of historical knowledge and compile it into one location. If you have any questions concerning the history, feel free to ask.
The Dark Days
(Magvel Years BDK (Before the Demon King) unknown)
Knowledge about the first human(s) has long been lost to time. Records that tell of such events possess a great deal of contradictions, and even the magics of the Virad have been unable to discern the details of such lost information. However, we do know that, on Magvel, there exist two sentient races: Human and Manakete.
Though we know little of the origins of mankind, we do know that the first and most powerful of Manakete was named Mornavel. His power was great, and his children followed his commands. He created and blessed the Sacred Stone at the center of the continent, protected atop the mountains that divide the modern countries of Renais and Carcino.
Eventually, however, the warring of peoples caused the population of Manakete to dwindle, and Mornavel scorned mankind for this. It is said that he foresaw a war in which mankind was driven to the brink of extinction by a demonic, mutated king, and said that if humans destroyed the last of his children, then he would destroy the humans in return. He predicted that only nine hundred years would pass after the destruction of this demon before his children were destroyed.
It is rumored that after Mornavel’s Prophecy, he disappeared from the face of the continent, leaving only a timepiece (known as Lament for Mornavel’s disappointment) behind, though its location is unknown. This timepiece contains a magic that teleports the user to a random point in time, unless they are capable of preventing the degradation of the Manakete.
The First King
(Magvel Years BDK unknown-0)
At some point, the humans of Magvel united behind a man called Fomortiis. His ideals were sound, he aimed to unify the lands, and as such, Fomortiis became the first de facto King of mankind. He ruled for many years through the dark days, earning his people's respect and admiration.
But Fomortiis was plagued by greed. Even when he achieved the position of King of All Men, he wanted more. So, he turned his attention towards the Sacred Stone. The Sacred Stone in the center of Magvel was widely regarded by the humans (and some Manakete as well) as a physical manifestation of life, death and rebirth. It was a beacon of light atop one of the highest mountains in all the lands, and many humans that had similarly been cursed with greed had gone in search of it, never to return. One day, Fomortiis decided to journey to the Sacred Stone, and take its powers for himself.
As Fomortiis reached the stone, he had his first encountered his soon-to-be arch enemy for the first time: Morva, a Manakete that had been guarding the Sacred Stone his whole life. Morva warned Fomortiis what would happen if he didn’t leave the stone in its rightful place, explaining that every being has a bit of the light from the Stone in their hearts already. He warned him to turn away from his greed, explaining that while Fomortiis cannot take the light, his attempts to do so could put it out. And to be responsible for dousing the light would result in a fate worse than death.
But Fomortiis scoffed at Morva, blinded by the fortune and glory the Sacred Stone could provide him. He was too close to turn back now.
Fomortiis and Morva face off for the first time.
Morva, who had slain many humans that sought the Sacred Stone over the years, was no easy opponent. The fight that ensued was a vicious bout, but Fomortiis’ unparalleled skill with a blade gave him the edge he needed to overcome the dragon. He was now just one step away from the Sacred Stone he had coveted for so long.
The Great Sealing
(Magvel Years ADK (After [the rise of] the Demon King) 0-3)
Down on Magvel, the populace was unaware of the events that had transpired above. All they saw was the light from the Sacred Stone go out, and a monstrosity’s descent from the mountains.
This being was Fomortiis, warped and twisted by his attempted theft of the Stone’s light. Morva was right - he had suffered a fate worse than death. As the Demon King, Fomortiis’ reign over Magvel turned from benevolent to horrifying. Some humans loved their king enough to stay loyal to the beast that now ruled them; these loyalists became the first of the monsters.
Corrupted by greed, Fomortiis became the Demon King.
Fomortiis' right hand as King was a warrior named Grado. Knowing his friend was long gone, Grado decided it for the best that he destroy the mutated remains of what was once his friend, and began the campaign to kill the Demon King. His first act was to travel atop the highest mountain in the lands and investigate the Sacred Stone and the Demon King's birth. It is here that he met Morva, barely clinging to life, but still protecting the Sacred Stone. With Grado and the humans’ help, Morva was slowly nursed back to health. Upon returning to the lands below with his new comrade Grado, Morva became the much needed rallying point for the Manaketes to join in the fight against the Demon King.
Morva was the first dragon to hold friendly relations with the humans.
After Morva and Grado’s uniting, their peoples followed suit, working together to face the dangerous threat. For the first time since the beginning, Humans and Manketes had begun to work together, fighting the enormous demon that threatened to destroy their lands.
For many years, Grado leads the humans and Morva leads the Manakete in attacks versus Fomortiis and his legion of creatures, each as futile as the last. Fomortiis is unable to be defeated, even with the newly forged Sacred Twins in possession of the humans’ most powerful warriors.
Morva, still in possession of the Sacred Stone, is met by Mornavel, who has not shown his face for centuries. The ancient dragon has decided that he would answer the prayers of the despairing Humans, who have finally done what he has asked. Mornavel restores the light to the great Sacred Stone; from the blinding light comes hope, and thus the stone is split into five parts. Five different Sacred Stones means that each hero will have the power to seal Fomortiis, and as a result, he'll not know which to target. These pieces are then bequeathed unto mankind's five heroes: Grado, Regulus, Latona, Felix and Jehanna.
(From left to right) Latona, Regulus, Grado, Jehanna and Felix.
Fomortiis, meanwhile, has discovered a hieroglyph in the black temple that cited, among other things, the location of Lament as a tomb beneath the eastern sands. Even in his human life, Fomortiis had been fascinated with the Manakete's religion. As the Demon King moves to exit the temple, eager to investigate, he is ambushed in the temple by Morva, Grado, and the remaining four heroes. The ensuing battle came to be known as The Great Sealing, and ended with Grado delivering the final blow to Fomortiis, capturing the Demon King's soul inside of his piece of the Sacred Stone.
The Founding
(Magvel Years ADK 3-Unkown)
After sealing the Demon King, the heroes discovered the hieroglyph detailing Lament's location. While shocked that the legends of Mornavel were true, the five heroes and Morva destroyed the hieroglyph, believing that Lament and the timeline should be untouched for everyone's own good. Eventually, the legend of the timepiece known as Lament was forgotten by all but a few. Morva became the leader of the Manakete, and many of them settled in the dark woods outside the black temple.
The five heroes of mankind were heralded by all humans for their victory. Each hero was given a substantial plot of Magvel to rule as king or queen, the first nations were born, and the Sacred Stones acted as national treasures. Grado and Latona, though married, founded separate nations. Each nation was named for a person. The largest of the territories was named for its king, Grado. Jehanna named her country after herself as well. Regulus and Felix each named their countries after their wives, Renais and Frelia, respectively. Latona, however, named her country after her and Grado’s second-born son, her successor, Rausten.
Magvel, before the Great Earthquake.
Regulus’ wife Renais soon contracted a fatal illness, and so Regulus' kingly duties were the last thing on his mind. Eventually, the illness overtook his wife, and she died in her husband's arms. Stricken with grief, Regulus disappeared from his throne and his newfound nation - but not before naming it Renais, in memory of his beloved. With their queen dead and their king missing, the crown goes to Ettian, Regulus’ only son.
Following the death of Fomortiis, Regulus had the distinction of being one of six individuals that knew about Lament's existence. As a result, he departed for Jehanna to search for the artifact in an effort to turn back time and prevent his wife's death, despite the pact he made with the heroes that decreed it never be touched.
Regulus took to the desert in an effort to find Lament.
It took him several weeks, but eventually he located the tomb buried beneath Jehanna’s sands. As Regulus took up Lament, the timepiece judged his path, determining it to be unworthy. He is not to be the savior that will turn Magvel away from its untimely end.
As a result, Regulus’ memory is lost, and he is teleported to a random point in Magvel's past, present or future. This point turns out to be several decades after the second rise of the Demon King
Effectively, Regulus, the founder of Renais, is lost to the abyss of time.
The War of the Stones
(Magvel Years ADK 803-804)
(This is a recounted summary of the events of The Sacred Stones. If you have not played Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, or if you are rusty on details, then please visit Serenes Forest if you need more information.)
While Regulus was lost, the four other heroes of Magvel lived long and happy lives as kings and queens of their respective nations. For centuries, significant developments in Magvel were at a bit of a standstill; many wanderers discovered Lament, but none were deemed worthy by the timepiece. As the years went on, the land grew ever closer to its nine hundredth year and destruction.
With the exception of Carcino, a newly established republic, each nation was responsible for a Sacred Stone, and had been since the Great Sealing. The long time peace between these nations finally broke when Grado invaded its longtime ally and neighbor, Renais.
King Fado's children Ephraim and Erika, the royal twins of Renais, discovered that Grado intended to destroy the five Sacred Stones of Magvel. Both Frelia and Grado's Sacred Stones had been destroyed already, and Renais' stone was presumed destroyed as well. Eirika travels with Frelia's prince Innes to warn Rausten and Jehanna, while a bitter Ephraim attempts to conquer the forces of Grado's vast army. Eventually Grado falls to Ephraim, but the true enemy must still be fought: Grado's imperial prince Lyon, a long-time friend of the twins.
Ephraim and Erika, the heroes of the War of the Stones.
In Jehanna, Erika fails, and the Sacred Stone of the desert is destroyed. They return home to Renais to find it in a state of chaos, but upon securing their homeland, they receive their nation's Sacred Twins and discover that their nation’s stone is, in fact, still intact. Unfortunately, they are ambushed by Lyon en route to Rausten. As he forcefully claims the Sacred Stone of Renais, the twins learn the shocking truth - that the prince of Grado orchestrated the war, and is being possessed by Fomortiis, the Demon King of legends.
The twins then travel to Rausten and successfully secure the final stone's safety. After repelling attacks from the remaining forces of Grado, Ephraim and Erika give chase to Lyon-Fomortiis, who had fled to the Darkling Woods surrounding the black temple. Fomortiis has tricked Lyon into thinking that the ceremony they will perform in the temple will stop a natural disaster from occurring in Grado in years to come; in reality, it will lead to the drawing of the Demon King's spirit back into his body.
Outside the temple, Fomortiis is confronted by Morva for the third time. They've fought twice, each victorious once. In their final duel, it is the demon king who comes out on top. In retribution for Morva's actions during the Great Sealing, Lyon-Fomortiis uses his dark powers to transform the great dragon into a monstrosity, as he had done many years prior to create his initial monsters. Set to guard the entrance to the black temple, Morva is ultimately slain by Ephraim and Erika, who enter in pursuit of Lyon-Fomortiis.
But they are too late. They realize after killing Lyon, who dies in the arms of his friends, that he served as the final sacrifice needed for the Demon King's full resurrection. With his body returned to him, Fomortiis plans to seek out Lament, turn back time to the Great Sealing, and prevent it from ever coming to pass. However, Erika and Ephiram are able to defeat Fomortiis due to the help of their friends and the five countries' Sacred Twin weapons – the same weapons used by the heroes of old. As done by Grado during the Great Sealing, the twins use the last Sacred Stone (Rausten's) to capture Fomortiis' soul once more.
The second sealing of Fomortiis.
Having twice been defeated, the Demon King's body is destroyed at long last, and the War of the Stones comes to a close. The last Sacred Stone is then put under great protection in Renais.
(Magvel Year ADK 809)
Directly prior to the outbreak of the War of the Stones, Lyon, alongside a group of dark magic researchers, discovered and used a forbidden spell (a variation of the spell known as “Time Shear”) that allowed him to see the future. What he saw was a massive earthquake that would sink the southern peninsula of Magvel, and a huge quantity of Grado's territory. Needing incredible powers to stop this from happening, he began to experiment with the Fire Emblem, which was the Sacred Stone of Grado that contained the spirit of the Demon King Fomortiis. Lyon ended up falling under the influence of the Demon King in his attempts to save his nation from calamity.
Despite the attempted prevention, the sinking of Grado occurred anyway, five years after the War of the Stones. Many people see the earthquake as divine punishment for a nation that brought so much death and destruction to its neighbors, while the few that recall the tales of Mornavel believe it is a warning to the people of Magvel that they have less than 100 years remaining.
Grado suffers the Great Earthquake, and the peninsula sinks beneath the ocean from the force.
Because of their massive losses, Grado is forgiven for their war crimes, and the whole of Magvel (Renais in particular) helps the nation rebuild what's left of its ruined territory.
The Uprising of the Virad
(Magvel Years ADK 809-829)
“Ah, one of our more prized scrolls. Treat it carefully.”
The dark magic researchers who worked alongside Lyon had long been eager to continue using the forbidden spell that foresaw the sinking of Grado. Though they had lost their second leader, Knoll, in the Great Earthquake, these men decided to continue and use their power for the good of people all across Magvel. They spent decades mastering the spell’s use, under the leadership of a scholar known as Fawkes, and when at last they felt they were ready, they took up the title of “The Virad” and began to make their predictions public.
The enigmatic Fawkes, who emerged as the head of the Virad.
While the populace was initially doubtful as to their ability to predict future events, as the years went by, the mindset of the citizens began to change. The Virad’s prophecies were coming true.
Their predictions were, initially, rather minor. They predicted an outbreak of influenza in Renais, the birth date of Joshua’s son, and the economic development of Carcino, among other things. It wasn’t until they predicted a brief outbreak of war between Frelia and Carcino that the people began to doubt their prophets again, thinking a conflict of that nature to be a ludicrous notion. King Innes, however, would soon prove them right.
The Carcino Campaigns
(Magvel Years ADK 829-831)
The cause of the Carcino campaigns can be traced all the way back to the War of the Stones, when Carcino aided Grado by hiring mercenaries to hunt Erika. While much of Magvel forgave Grado's war crimes, having been under the influence of the Demon King (and having suffered enough in light of the great earthquake), Carcino had no excuse for their poor judgment.
Innes, who was widely known to favor Erika, and having fought against Carcino during the War of the Stones, held particular animosity in regards to his eastern neighbors. Compounded with his brash nature, upon taking the throne, Innes never stopped looking for a reason to invade and annex.
Following the War of the Stones, Carcino hit a post-war economic boom. Their merchants were invaluable in the reconstruction of Magvel, and in the years that followed, the ruling council began to overestimate their small republic's prowess and importance. In light of their high economic standing, archduke Alistar of Frelia had begun embezzling funds from the blossoming republic.
The proximate trigger of the war occurs when Innes sends the archduke as an ambassador to Carcino, requesting the development of new trade routes into Frelian territory. But Alistar doesn't arrive to open arms; Carcino's ruling council, with their new found confidence, publicly executed the archduke upon discovering his crimes.
Now, many historians in Magvel actually believe that Innes orchestrated the whole execution. Brilliant tactician that he is, some think Innes knew that Carcino had discovered Alistar's crimes. It’s thoroughly debated as to whether or not he purposefully sent the archduke to his death, knowing that it would give him reason to invade Carcino.
Innes was eager to put his plans into effect.
Regardless, it gave him the reason he needed to justify an impromptu meeting with the powers of Magvel. He explained the situation, and the dangers behind Carcino's overconfidence. Innes told his fellow kings that the goal behind the Carcino Campaigns was to “liberate” the mercantile republic from its council of elders, and take it under Frelian control, where a stable rule would be secured. The reason behind the meeting was to request that the campaign be contained within its two parties, and that the rest of Magvel not concern themselves with it. The notion was unanimously passed, and the following morning, Innes invaded his republican neighbor.
The Campaign went almost entirely according to plan. While Carcino's military had drastically improved with their economy, Frelia maintained dominance through the first sixteen months of the war. Indeed, by this time, Carcino was on the brink of collapse. That's when the council sent a plea out to the rest of Magvel's nations. It was heard and ignored by all but one: King Hyvel (Ephraim's newly-appointed successor and son) and Renais. The whole of Magvel was already somewhat uneasy with the Carcino campaigns, only agreeing to it upon being promised by Innes that it would be contained within its two parties. Renais in particular was anxious; as a nation, they harbored a deep abhorrence for invasion in light of what happened during the War of the Stones.
The forced occupation of Carcino left many uneasy.
King Hyvel, having succeeded his father Ephraim two years prior, was under a lot of stress. His wife Alienna was on her deathbed, and he had taken over his father’s responsibilities just after the outbreak of the war to the north of Renais. The pleas coming from Carcino finally broke him, and he sent a relief force to retaliate against Renais’ longtime allies in the northwest.
Despite having previously taken a position of neutrality in the conflict, he thus aided Carcino upon hearing their pleas and tragic tales (some true, some fabricated). Renais' liberation of Carcino was a quick operation; Innes, despite his incredible anger with Hyvel's actions, knew in his heart that a war with Renais would only prove to worsen his standing on the continent. While the other nations maintained their neutrality, they were still unsure of Innes and the true cause for his invasion. As a result, the liberation went mostly unchallenged. Hyvel's actions botched Innes' campaign, leaving the King resentful and the Renais people displeased with the hostile standing they now had with Frelia. Carcino was not to be annexed after all.
And so ended the Carcino Campaigns. Of course, by this time, the republic has been totally changed by the hand of war; they have lost many of the elders, and the government is in chaos, so they reformed to have a single elected leader. Innes failed, Carcino begins to flourish once again, and he blames Hyvel and Renais for his losses.
The Last of a Bloodline
(Magvel Year ADK 832)
Almost immediately following the Carcino Campaigns, a major change in leadership occurred on Magvel. The queen of Rausten, L’Arachel, along with her husband, had died of a plague. Though rumors existed of her having a child, there was never a formal announcement, and there is no record of whether such a child would have survived.
When L'Arachel's life ended, so too did Latona's bloodline.
With the royal deaths, Rausten began looking for new leadership, and the Virad, sympathizing with the citizens over the loss of their beloved queen, offered to lead the nation to the best of their ability. Having correctly predicted the outbreak of the Carcino Campaigns, the Virad certainly had the people’s respect, and their prophecies were now regarded almost as scripture by the continent as a whole. So, when they took up rule over Rausten, it was virtually a completely undisputed development.
The Great Prophecy
(Recorded in ADK 842; Predicted Fulfillment: ADK 857)
The source of darkness, twice defeated, shall return once more,
Reincarnated by the younger of two who hail from the center of Magvel.
But do not fret; it shall not last.
The darkness shall eternally perish, though his actions shall appease the Dragon.
The Lament shall break, the light prevail,
Led forth by the two who hail from the center of Magvel.
And thus the differences shall be forgot,
And eternity, the lands shall live.
Hail the two from the center of Magvel.
Since the prophecy made by the Virad, it is thought by many that the "two who hail from the center of Magvel," are the current two twin princes of Renais, Banon and Janten. Though the difference is by mere minutes, Janten is the younger of the two, and, since the prophecy says the younger will be the cause for the return of the "source of darkness twice defeated," many have said that he should be killed. Yet Hyvel was unable to follow through with his people's pleas.
Though he has been scorned by all but his family since the age of five, Janten has still tried to hold the best outlook on life as possible, though he has not been allowed to do nearly as much as his brother. Hyvel, however, has been tormented, and forced to relinquish his rule until Banon is ready to take the throne, giving it instead to his cousin, the son of Eirika, Finnick (the older of her two children).
Now it is the year 856, and it comes ever closer to the predicted date of fulfillment of the most recent and controversial of the Virad's prophecy. The time has come for Banon's coronation, much to the jealousy of his brother, Janten, and cousin, Cecil (the son of Finnick).
