Hi everyone!

I’ve been having a few ideas over the last month, and I’ve also been more than a little shocked to find that I have the mental bandwidth to maybe think about running a second thread. So, naturally, I thought I’d see who might be interested in what’s been floating around my head. :3

——

One

Don’t you see? Now is the time to strike, to change everything. The old world is dying - what we’ll do can only be called mercy.

A story-focused, character-driven cyberpunk conspiracy thriller. This world would look a lot more like Blade Runner or Ghost in the Shell than The Matrix. If anyone’s read Chuck Wendig’s excellent new book, Zer0es, there might be some influences from there, too. :3 The characters will have to cut through a web of secrets and lies not only for their own sake - but for stakes larger than any of them likely could have imagined. The world will be filled with artificial augmentation, synthetic intelligence, pervasive technology, and maybe even a little body horror. You’ll dodge corporate goons, chase government agents, find unlikely allies and, if you survive, change the world. But will you change the future - or only delay the inevitable?

——

Two

…We must no longer be defined by our memories of that great conflict. A generation ago, we were explorers. Today, we continue that legacy.

This would be a continuing series of stories set in the Star Trek universe, considerably after any of the TV series, and not in the new films’ alternate universe. Decades ago, the major powers of the galaxy were collectively involved in a protracted, wide-scale war with an implacable enemy that they only barely defeated. Now, a generation later, the governments and infrastructure of those once-powerful nations have finally recovered to the point where some of them are preparing to explore the territories, colonies, and bases that they’ve lost, and discover a galaxy both familiar and alien. Your characters will be the likely-somewhat-irregular crew of the (shrunken, battered, but still extant) Federation’s first new starship in the better part of a century, on a mission to extend the edges of the map. The game world will feel like a gentle mixture of 90s-era Star Trek with a measure of Firefly and Oregon Trail thrown in, along with whatever else we collectively make of things.

——

——

All of these would not be first-come first-served; like the thread I’m running right now every character submission would be more like an audition. I also expect all of these ideas would have fairly small casts - likely not more than 6-8 people. That is, course, provided there’s enough interest to even start one of them. :3 I'm really only going to take on one of these ideas right now - as other things wrap up or come to the end of their stories, I might start others, though.

Let me know!

Interested in the Cyberpunk one. I'll keep an eye on this.

As it so happens I am a great fan of cyberpunk luminaries like William Gibson, Neal Stephenson, and Bruce Sterling (as well as their numerous forerunners).

Therefore (and perhaps unsurprisingly) I, Vigfast, would at this time like to expresses a particular interest in the first option presented.

I would also, for the record, like to express my deep affection for the more critical approach to selecting characters for an RP (for writing is an art where speed is truly not life).

Edit: Completely Off-Topic: "Tinker, builder, hacker, thief"...George Smiley would be pleased.

How interesting, I hadn't expected votes for the cyberpunk story. :3 I'd like to hear a few more opinions before I get very far, but I do have (as I do for all of these) quite a lot of out-of-character outlining for that story.

As for me, I'm every one of those things - some of them professionally. *winks* And I did love Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, though I read it years and years ago. Maybe I'll see if I can find my copy for some airport reading.

It is without a doubt an excellent book, but I have never been able to shake the feeling that The Spy Who Came in from the Cold was le Carré at his best.

However, enough rambling about English spies turned writers.

On-Topic: Fair enough, I eagerly await the verdict of the masses.

Mm. I'd like to hear at least a couple other voices before I decide if I'm putting up another OOC thread. I'm sure someone out there has an opinion! :3

I am in no hurries, a good RP is well worth a wait.

I believe a policy of bribery based on candy would be useful as a means of attaining more feedback.

Howdy, @Naril! Fancy seeing you here. ;)

Going against the grain, it seems, but if you'd have me, I'd be interested in option number three! If it's number one that takes off, though, I will happily check out the OOC thread and try to brainstorm a character. (I'm less experienced with both cyberpunk and thrillers, but I do love the opportunity to dodge some government spooks!)

And, just to round things out, on the subject of option number two: how much Star Trek knowledge would players need to have? I really like the concept, and I'm mad about Firefly, but my knowledge of Star Trek is limited to the new AU movies and about half of the first season of the first series, watched a long time ago.
