Diplomatic standings:North Korea - Extremely Limited Relations. France is one of only two European Union members that has yet to extend diplomatic recognition to the self-titled 'People's Republic'; this current situation is unlikely to change unless the isolated regime in Pyongyang makes improvements to its human rights record and also begins dismantling its nuclear weapons program. Despite the political stance of the French government it still provides a plethora of humanitarian aid to the people of North Korea.
Iran - Disintegrating Relations. Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution the strong ties that once bound Paris and Tehran have become mostly undone as France's refusal to continue selling enriched uranium to post-revolution Iran became the tip of the iceberg in high profile international disagreements between the two states. Different approaches to dealing with the conflict in Syria coupled with France's participation in European Union sanctions have only managed to exacerbate decades of opposition.
Philippines - Cordial Relations. France has managed to become the island nation's third largest trading partner and has invested heavily in the country's infrastructure as a deterrent to China's expansionist ambitions.
Syria - Hostile Relations. In 2012 the Government of France withdrew diplomatic relations with the Syrian Arab Republic choosing instead to recognize the Syrian National Coalition as the true representative of the Syrian people. France supports the Syrian people in their democratic struggle against both dictator Bashar al-Assad and ISIL; France is committed to ensuring that democracy and stability return to the region.
