So, I had an idea, it's really just a thought at this point and I want to see what you guys think of it. What if each main island in this world had a largemassive being (think shadow of the colossus type monsters but bigger) which, if killed, causes all the plant life on that island to rot and die, essentially destroying the ecosystem on that island. Bigger islands would have a larger 'guardian' and most would be peaceful unless directly attacked or if the environment was being damaged some how. Natives to each area could treat them as gods of the land. Festivals would be held to honor them in some areas, wheres in other areas they could be seen as a threat that needs to be contained somehow.
Think of them as being around the scale of the last 3 monsters on this chart
@mechOrigins I think this is a good idea, the guardians things. But the fact that their death results in such devastation is what nags me. I like the idea of Dwarves living above a giant molten giant, that holds the ground up beneath them in its slumber, and the Long Leaf Tree of the elves, much like a LOTR Ent, but much larger, it moves very slowly around its lands, but when provoked it will unleash wooden hell.

Maybe their deaths have different impacts?
What if they are all sleeping, and whenever one of them wakes up it means some kind of great change is about to occur, weather it's a massive earthquake or a deadly plague that sweeps the land, or even a drought that lasts for a long period of time?
I can imagine a small town that has become deathly still almost over night, as all the families huddle together inside, waiting for the passing of an event that will mark a new age for this land. The news had just spread that their slumbering god has opened its eyes for the first time since the great flood...
