In 2084 six people arrived on Mars and formed their own colony, though it was funded by governments and private corporations. When more people arrived two years later they found that they had a hard time getting along with the older colonists and, eventually, the six newer colonists moved to a mining base several kilometers away. Starting new colonies became the norm for Mars, and, eventually, the children that grew up there did the same thing. They formed what the Martians call micro-communes, groups of people, usually 3-8, sometimes families, which share the labor and resources of a small colony.

Each micro-commune, or commune if it has more than 15 or 20 people, has its own rules and if you don't like your commune you can apply for acceptance in a different commune or form a new one with other, like-minded people.

So, as new arrivals (any age over 18) or children born there (16-25), or people who wanted to start anew (any age over 18) that's what we did. We came together (over Martian craigslist/skype at first, then in person) and pooled our money to buy the supplies to build a new micro-commune, including various 3 meter cylindrical modules (walking platform 0.5 meters off the bottom, and supported by long rods driven into the ground), and the various bits of equipment we would need (air processors, solar panels, batteries, smelters, electrolysis equipment, etc.)

The RP will start on the day that we arrive in our vehicles. I'll try to list what equipment we'll have and the different jobs that are common in a micro-commune, but if you have any ideas, feel free to make suggestions. There will be little to no fighting in this RP, maybe a thief or you a bar brawl at most, so fighter type characters aren't really needed. A fighter-hybrid could work though, like an ex-military person that is a mechanic or a cop that has other skills.

Just a quick explanation about Housemates, they aren't exactly "forced" to have sex with anyone. There are reasons (violent episodes in the last 30 days, poor personal hygiene, they have an STD, etc.) for which they can reject a person without penalty, and can reject anyone with a penalty (partial loss of a share of the commune's profit usually). They are only contracted to do it every so often (once a week, once every two weeks, etc.) as well, so they aren't just free-for-all prostitutes, there to fullfil everyone's sexual whims. Also, they examined and approved every colony member before accepting the job, and have to approve any new member before they get added to their contract, and usually the colony. They tend to be the kind of person that would have many lovers for short periods of time each, and merely add that to their resume to get an advantage when other communes are looking for a new person. To them it's no different than a biologist being willing to deal with human waste to get an advantage over the other biologists.

I added it so that I could create an NPC Housemate/Botanist to the commune so that we could have someone there to interact with all of the time.

@Jagon K DWcool. That would work well. Maybe he could build us chemical based refineries so we don't have to just use smelters. Or at least help my engineer guy design them.

Just two things: what level of technology do we have? are laser tools common or rare? what is our fuel source? the sun? nuclear generators? antimatter? ect.
Also, what is our starting budget. i.e. for the vehicles am I limited to a common buggy or can I get a huge mobile base?

Lasers are fairly common, especially for things like cutters, welders, and mining drills, but they are more expensive than physical tools because they are higher tech and therefore require more specialized materials and equipment to make. The most common, and cheapest, source of power is solar panels, but the larger communes, such as those at the older colonies, would have LFTR reactors or U-235/P-239 reactors. We would pretty much be limited to solar and RTGs.

My person and the NPC will come in a buggy hauling a trailer about half that size, and will have pooled our resources to do it. Depending on how well off your former commune was, though, you could easily be rich enough to own that on your own. Our two communes were about average in per-capita wealth.

Name: Jagon K. Dragonwulf

Appearance: A middle aged man in his early twenties. White skin tanned by long times of exposure to the sun, with red eyes that Jagon claims is hereditary. Jagon is six feet, four inches, with a thin build. His face looks kind and charismatic, except for the eyes. Those just look plain old creepy when he stares at you.

Age: 24 years old. That's what he says.

Role: Geologist/chemist. Knows a tad more about bombs than a "normal" person should ever know.

Skills: Knows how to quickly identify rocks and metals, knows many useful chemical combinations, has memorized about 30 different bomb designs, and is a chef (in training).

Personality: Likes to joke about time and death. A lot. He's a bit stand-offish and not initially a gentle person.

History: Came from Earth rather in a hurry. All that is known about him is that he was a whistle-blower in a very large company. It is said that he had to flee for his life.

Vehicle/equipment:Has a custom exosuit with 10 days food, air, and water. Always takes a chemistry kit with him, his trusty crossbow, and a small microchip.

That's a long lasting battery.

You could also have something like this to haul your stuff and drive there. Might be a bit faster. Just say it's got a battery/solar panel and fuel cell, making it a hybrid.

I'll start the OOC and we can start designing the base.

We just need a basic layout for the base.

I was thinking that we would start with an airlock, a 4-way junction connected to it, and a power management module to the right and the life support module to the left. The outside air processor and tanks would connect to the life support module. The solar panels would connect to the power module. The 4 way junction also connects to another junction, and it to a water management module, which connects to an outside ice melter and water tank. I'll try to draw it out, but I'll have to do it in ascii, as I can't post pictures.

atmo[] []Water
[] []
[===][][][]
AL []
[]Power

After that, we can connect living areas and a 'ponics bay at the least.

The IC that I forgot to post a link to.

Also, IC, I'm not sure if James would be willing to work with someone with such a mysterious past, out of concern that it might cause problems for them later. Kylie, on the other hand, would figure you were just needing to get away and let it slide.

If it's government problems, the people of Mars don't like Earth governments much. They see them as inefficient and corrupt. To explain why, I'll give you an example of two different cities which are having power shortages.

On Earth, a politician would learn about it, decide they needed a new power plant, and then get his people to work on it. The bill would be influenced by his various supporter's interests, and those of his friends, eventually creating a bill that was of significant benefit to them, but didn't necessarily deal with the problem. It would then be voted on by politicians as soon as he thought he had enough support, and if it was passed, it would be implemented as it was written, and everyone one have to pay for it with taxes, but without having a say in it.

On Mars, one or multiple people would realize that they had a power problem and suggest building a nuclear reactor. Various people around the commune would discuss the pros and cons of it and eventually a few camps would arise, including those that don't want it, and various groups of those that do. If most of the people wanted it, those that did would work together to create a compromise, and in time it might gain majority support. Once it did, someone would post the exact plan on the commune's network so everyone could look it over. Eventually one version would win majority support and the people would vote on it. Then the money and resources to do it would come out of the resources of the commune, and anyone who wanted to could donate to it.
