I'm just curious if there's anyone here who does DMing for D&D 3.5/Pathfinder. I'd like to join a Play by Post game, but considering I can't DM a game out of a wet paper bag...

Yeah. Don't know if this is the place to ask or not.

Dunno if it helps, but if I had any confidence I'd probably try DMing a 5E game, even if only to see how well I could do it. XD

Whats so bad about 5e, @BlazeGamma?

We thought it was 4e everyone hated on, not 5e...

I used to DM D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder, but have long since decided it just isn't my cup of tea. However, I used to be big into play by post for that sort of thing.

Here are my suggestions to you:

  • Try looking in the Tabletop Roleplaying section, first. You may have better luck there.
  • If that fails, try the Paizo forums. They have sections devoted to play by post games.
  • Finally, you may consider the Giant in the Playground forums, though that's a dangerous place to tread.
  • If the last two options don't sound appealing to you, you may consider trying out other tabletop games on these forums. I've seen people push a huge variety of stuff over there, though I haven't dived in myself.

Happy hunting! I hope you get the Pathfinder or 3.5 experience you're looking for.

I like the customization options in 3.5/Pathfinder. 4e and 5e are really barren in that regard.

Yeah, I did look at Tabletop. 5e games as far as the eye can see. Not much/anything else though.

5e has a lot of player-made customization from what we've seen (story, species/races, settings, etc.) imported and adapted from other systems (like pathfinder). It naturally won't have as much as 3.5/pathfinder, seeing how its not been around as long, but that should be rather given.

We've not got much experience (yet) but our impression is that character creation is easier in 5e.

The level of customization in PF/3.5 is what makes the character creation complicated as it is. I do not mind this.

It also leaves some important options up to the DM that I believe are a good change. (For instance, since "feats" don't have the same function as they did in 3.5 / Pathfinder, they're optional.)

That said, your best bet to find a Pathfinder game is the Paizo play by post forums. There's plenty of folks that still love 3.5 and Pathfinder there.

5E being popular here makes plenty of sense, though: it's the newest D&D edition, and it was specifically designed to have qualities of 2E, 3.5, and 4th. It's done a pretty good job of that while being its own game, and it's brought a lot of new players in, too.

EDIT: If you were willing to DM, you might actually get a good game going here, but you did say that's not something you're confident about doing, aye? Any reason?

I've tried before. 1- I can't run a coherent session. 2- I lack confidence in my worldbuilding long term. 3- It takes the mystery out for me if I'm the only one DMing

Well, I can't help you with 1., and 3. is something all DMs sacrifice unless they're working in pairs. However...

If you're not confident in worldbuilding, I'd say that if you ever try GMing again, you should look at Paizo's adventure paths for Pathfinder. They lay out whole campaigns for you to use, and if you're playing with people who haven't played that campaign before, they'll be in for a pretty good story. A lot of them are really well written, and they dabble in very different genres. You get things from Fantasy Horror to Fantasy with sci-fi elements to traditional "Let's loot the dungeon!" fantasy.

I totally understand 3., though. I love to be surprised when I play tabletop games. That's why I've always preferred to be a player in tabletop games.

Actually, one more note:

If you ever want to see your players build a kingdom in a 3.5 or Pathfinder game, check out the Kingmaker adventure path. That thing is gold.

In response to the OP, I do some DMing for 3.5 but I'm not the best and I would have to have some time to forge a plot/setting. Also, play-by-post might take a while due to all the stats and turns.

Yeah, I know. Been in PBP games before. I actually may take my hand at running a game, since the weekly game I'm in has rotating DMs. I could go for the practice.

You should do it. Practice makes perfect and lack of practice degrades what skill you have.

I hold fairly extensive Dungeon Master experience, and in particular, I can safely say that while a Play-by-Post scenario is possible with Third Edition, the fluidity of Fifth Edition and its flexibility is why it holds a much safer, more readily used placed in that role. The sheer amount of math that can get involved, just by rolling the dice alone, can make it impractical as does its favoring of grid based combat rather than the aptly named "Theater of the Mind".

I will agree with you that the Third Edition has the absolute most customization possible, which is both a massive boon and a horrible curse depending upon what it is you intend, but I also hold the hope that Wizards of the Coast will be wise enough to invest heavily in Fifth Edition and continue to attempt to expand its influence and role in the market. As of now, Fifth Edition suffers from being too new and its supplements being slowly developed.

Sadly, this reply has offered little to resolve your issue and were it not such a bad time in my reality, owing to my extensive working hours, I would indeed be running a variant low magic savage fantasy Third Edition setting from my own works. In perhaps April this can be a viable thing, provided you still hold interest then, but I must also say at the same time it might not even be what it is you are looking for. As example, I use a modified E6 variant and I have tweaked some of the rules - currently having just finished the "beta" run of the setting in an actual table top - of which I am still working on.
