@LeeRoy

Nothing attracts people like activity, so what say you we talk about this team fight thing?

@Drifting Pollen If you have allies, bring allies. The Arena needs more people.
Especially since some of the best are either leaving and or indisposed. Humble compliment @Skallagrim, @MelonHead, and @Rilla.
Bring as many people from other sites as you can, my dudes and dudettes.

I'll see what I can do. Unfortunately, the other arenas I frequent are also lacking in participants... but perhaps I can find someone bloodthirsty enough to spread their duels across multiple sites.

@Starfall
Well obviously this would need to be organized in some way shape or form. Anything that happens in the name of a faction war would have to be labeled as such.

Example, the title would be as follows:

Faction A vs Faction 1: Superperson vs Meat Hunk

We'd need to sticky a Faction thread that catalogs the factions that are active, and the number of Faction victories and losses.

Y'know, stuff like that.

If you consider others from sites not here unworthy, your community will slowly die. I learned this lesson a long time ago, people tend to hop around. People however do tend to stick with groups, be it a site or a group of friends, and when you get a group that travels around from place to place(usually all at once) its not a bad thing.

Though I'm not particularly inclined to bring in people from other sites, I'd be willing to join a group if one needs more members.

Considering the anemic condition of the fighting community on RPGuild, an infusion of fresh faces is probably warranted. You can only fight the same people so many times; without new players, things will stagnate. A group of ten or twenty people isn't especially sustainable in this particular context.

I've always promoted cross-community interaction. I used to site-hop all the time; that's how I came to the old RPGuild a few years ago. Laying down lines of communication between various communities and sites allows you to draw on a much larger potential pool of participants. Insularity is fairly harmful to any arena/fighting community in the long run.

Woah, I think you might be reading into things a bit far here. Pollen could have had a multitude of reasons for not wanting to go advertising the guild on other sites, one obvious one springs to mind.

Yeah, I read it as "I don't necessarily want to bring in people from off-site" not "I don't want to bring in people from off-site because they're BADDIES."

Although @Enki could probably be forgiven for that interpretation because, from a cursory glance at the last few pages, he's one of those aforementioned off-site players.

This is actually the first time any of the new people who came in and joined the Majesty Tournament have come and talked to us in the Arena chat, so any feelings of being 'outsiders' are kind of self enforced. Hell, there's so few of us originally from the Guild left here that I don't even see how it could feel exclusive.

I routinely go missing for months or years at a time from Guild, so I'll take your word for it.

That being said, new people should always be considered a boon for a fighting community. More people, more matches.

Yeah I know. We've always had pretty inclusive policies for new people, provided they show any interest in actually joining the community, but there's not much you can do if people aren't interested in talking with us, we're not going to force people to join.

Also, a lot of the people who do come in and ask questions tend to then disappear unfortunately.

I didn't think what I said was terrible in any form to see such a defense.

I don't think about outsiders anymore, I just want to have fun with people and get some licks in here and there.

As far as our group we consider ourselves omniversal, so we can pop in anywhere.

The fighting community is stretched way to thin from back years ago. Now it's just a bunch of small sites with a few dedicated few contained in there little comfort zone. And that's fine for those that like that, maybe it's the new norm I guess.

We are just trying to spread out and see what's out there.

The only downside to here is the over reliance on t1, which is just a personal taste thing.

(Edit: also we didn't barge In talking about freaking amazing we are. We let the fists talk for us.)

Well, there isn't just one single fighting community. Never has been. It's always been groups of varying sizes, each on their individual sites, often unaware of one another.

The community I played in - and still hang around - is still fairly populous. It's de-centralized though, we only come out of the woodworks for tournaments. Our community ran an annual team tournament with sixty-four participants, and we'd often get as many as 100 or more people trying to enter with their friends. The group was never static; people came and went, but we always had at least thirty-two people for our 1v1 tournaments and usually sixty-four. You could probably tap somewhere between 150-200 fighters if you really went searching for them.

On the other hand, other communities are remnants of chat-rooms and only have ten or fifteen people. A lot of these communities do dwindle over time, simply because they don't draw in new faces. That happened somewhat with my home community. We had the old guard from 2006-2008, then the new guard (including myself) stepped in at 2008 and began running tournaments. Around 2011/2012 we became too busy with RL and there wasn't a "third wave" to replace us.

I think the reason RPGuild's arena community is so small is that it doesn't have much traction with the rest of the site. I mean, there's 60,000+ users - if even half of those are active accounts, you'd think there'd be more fighters.

Hello all!

Questions about characters. I am reading over a lot of the combatants here and am curious as too how some of the powers work. I see a great diversity on how they are used. From reading I gathering that some people have a limit per day, some use something like spell-points where they can push so much 'power' towards a spell and others just have an ability and the more posts they charge the ability the stronger it gets.

Which do you think is easier?

The most basic systems are a charge and a resource-pool system.

A charge system would be that you generate a charge or "prep" in a single post. Any given ability costs X or Y preps/charges. Expend charges, use abilities. Depending on the ruleset for the community, you may or may not be able to fight while generating a "charge", but in my experience, it's considered acceptable to generate a "charge" as long as you aren't using an ability that spends charges or taking damage, and you're actively acknowledging in your post that your character is doing something to generate said charge (via ki, magic, technology or what have you).

A resource-pool system would be something like a "mana pool" for a spellcaster. I'll use that example, just to stay consistent. They start the match with 20/20 mana points. Each of their spells costs X or Y mana points, which depletes their pool until they reach 0 and cannot use any more abilities. This system also tends to have a use-per-day or a cooldown system attached so that someone can't just spam the same ability every post. They may or may not regenerate a small number of points per "passive" post when they aren't actively using abilities.

That being said, your character comes first. Develop the system to fit the character, not the other way around.

Whatever you feel comfortable with. You will have to experiment some. I'm currently working on a guy who uses runes that deplete and recharge over time.

Perhaps you should be a little more careful with your wording, what you said could easily be construed as an accusation of elitism. If it was just well meaning advice it would perhaps have been better to look around a little, where you would find the Arena community has always been accepting of new groups. Hell, it was invaded just over a month ago and the response was excellent despite quite significant (albeit RP-driven) dickwaving and banter from the new people, unfortunately the invaders all disappeared as is often the case with new people, but it was still fun.

That probably wouldn't have been an issue, considering the community thrives on banter and silly arguments. However, just stopping in to say Hi would have been more than sufficient to join the community, not to mention the bare minimum requirement to join any community really. Not stopping in at all however I assumed you and your group were just dropping in for Gun's tournament and heading off, which is fine and completely up to you, but you can't really accuse RPG of excluding new groups for that reason.

Regardless, while everyone is here, hello Starfall, Divinity and Enki, welcome back Darth (Do bad guys still wear black?) and hello 13 Critics, you might want to post the question to the FAQ section, or look around and see if it's been asked before.

Perhaps I need to make this clear: I have nothing against people coming here from other sites, and I agree that new players are vital for any community. What I was saying was that I was unlikely to bring along a posse of allies myself, since the structure and rules of the other sites I tend to fight on would make this difficult.

Hope that clears things up.
