The elder nodded and went about his business.

"Oh, Makan hello." Sara greeted as he approached. "I really appreciate you checking in on me, even though it is actually I who should be asking of your own well being. I hope the children didn't cause too much trouble." She smiled. When questioned about the festival, Sara nodded. "Yes, I am glad that I will be able to see many more festivals like this. I feel like I haven't done enough to thank you. Not only for what you did for me, but putting this village on a path of peace." Sighing softly, she looked towards his wing and then back to him. "I noticed you enjoyed the music. Is there music from where you came from, Makan?"

"Oh, yes," Makan said. "We dragons love music. We sing for nearly every occasion: for celebration and mourning; for war and peace; for birth and death." He cast a glance at the carcass of the dead dragon. "However there are some exceptions. He shall be buried with no ceremony whatsoever."

The dragon rose to his feet. "If you wish to help me more, I do have one request, Miss Sara. I am going to dispose of the body, and make a nest. But afterward..." He paused. "You can sing, yes?"

She nodded towards his question. "Yes, of course." She curiously looked towards the area where the other dragon lay. "If you don't mind my asking, how are you going to dispose of him? And why does it matter if I can sing? Many of the villagers learn to sing for occasions like what we had today. Should I go ask for their assistance, as well?"

"There is no need to get others involved," said Makan. "However..." He shuddered at the idea. "I suppose you can... sell his parts. I know dragon body parts are worth much to humans." The dragon shook his head. "But I wish to hear you sing, by yourself. Please, walk with me."

Makan led the way closer to the forest, and began digging out a depression in the earth. It was large enough for him to curl up in. The dragon broke saplings and branches, and made a bed and rim for the best. He settled in, resting his head on the edge of the nest.

A golden eye focused on Sara. "If you would please be so kind," he murmured, "I would like a lullaby. I know it seems a silly request from a creature fierce enough to battle bears, wolves, and gryphons, but I would enjoy one."

"I would mostly suggest the scales or fangs. I don't thing we would need his actual body parts." She sense this wasn't something he readily wanted to discuss and followed him. Once he was settled, she cleared her throat after giggling softly as he defended his request.

When he was comfortable, Sara inhaled and began singing a soft lullaby to Makan about the ocean and how the soft waves rock ships to sleep.

Makan closed his eyes as Sara began singing. Her voice was soft and sweet, and the melody was soothing. In the East, dragons were more affiliated with water and thunder, but he himself was blessed with affinity for flame. His eyelids felt so heavy that he couldn't open them.

His tail twitched slowly in time to the rhythm, and a purr emanated from his chest. It could be felt more than heard, even in the ground. By the time Sara finished Makan was fast asleep.

As she sung, a rumble became a constant feeling in the ground. When she stopped, Makan was rumbling away. Sara was glad, and looked back to head back...but it was much tok late and she didn't know how far they had actually gone.

The wind blew and she shivered slightly. She didn't want to wake Makan, and decided to just lie down on the ground before laying down and making herself as comfortable as she could before drifting off.

Makan's body gave off a comfortable amount of heat, especially from his wings and belly. In his sleep his tail wrapped protectively around the young woman, as a child would squeeze their doll or teddy bear more tightly as they dreamed. The dragon slept dreamlessly. He was exhausted from the fight, and his weeks of travel. For the first time in so very long, he felt aafe, and happy.

Morning came too quickly as it always does. Feeling the bright light hit her eyes, Sara groaned softly as she began to wake. Looking down, she saw Makan"s tail over her and blinked. She went to move the tail, but it was slightly heavoer than she would have guessed. Looking behind her, she gently nudged the sleeping dragon.

"Makan, it's morning. And I have to go to the bathroom..." She flushed.

Sara's movements and voice woke the dragon up. His tail unwrapped to let the girl go. "Terribly sorry," he apologized, yawning. "I did not mean to detain you, Miss Sara. My tail tends to have a mind of its own." He chuckled, rising, and stretched. He spread his wings out to collect the morning sun.

Makan folded his wings up, now thoroughly warmed. "That flight would take weeks," he answered simply. "For the time being, I will stay nearby. But I need to find my own home; a child does not return to his parents simply because he's not found a place to live."

He shook himself, his scales rattling slightly. "For now," said Makan, "I will help your village in any way that I can. I believe I owe it to my race to show you that not all dragons are evil."

"I'm glad you'll be nearby. I was hoping to talk to you more and learn about you." She smiled. His housing siatuation confused her. "They do not? That happens sometimes with us. Some fall on hard times and come back to their beginnings to find their bearings."

"The only time we return to our families is when we find a mate," explained Makan. "And as I have not found one, I need not return home." He shook his body like a cat, and stretched. Many of his movements were similar to felines and birds.

"But a human that wishes to learn?" he chuckled. "That is a refreshing change. In the East, the human Emperor is a lover of the arts, and many philosophers have flourished under his rule."

"Oh, I see." Sara smiled. "So where you're from they enjoy music as well? Is it different from the music we make here? Does the emperor rule over humans and dragons or do you have a hierarchy of your own to follow?"

"Any man who believes he can control a dragon is either mad or suicidal," said Makan. "No, we are very separate from the government, even though they revere us. The music in the East is different. But even before men made instruments, we dragons used our abilities to make music, with air, fire, water, or earth."

Sara's eyes sparkled in excitement. "Oh I would love to hear that sometime."

They arrived back to the village where a few people greeted him and presented him with a large serving of fish from the river nearby. "Oh, that smells great you guys!" Sara grabbed herself a few fish before sitting down in the grass and began eating.

"Maybe someday," Makan chuckled. What were the odds of Sara finding her way to the East? In a way, her naïveté was charming, but it would be unwise to feed that dream.

However, feeding bellies was a much more plausible scenario, and the fish would work. He thanked the villagers before settling down next to the girl. The basket he'd been given had some of the largest they had caught. He sat up on his haunches and clapped his paws together. "Thank you for the meal," Makan murmured. He settled back down and began eating.

The village finished eating and began talk of gathering items to help mend their homes. Sara looked up towards Makan. "Shouldn't we help you look for a temporary home for you? In case of weather?" She questioned as she stood up and gave a stretch. "I should check to see how your wing is coming along..." She began looking over it and smiled. "You're recovering much faster than I thought!" She gasped. "That's amazing.."

"Dragons naturally heal faster than humans," Makan replied matter-of-factly. "Wings heal quickly, as a necessity. Dragons need their wings for many reasons. As for a temporary home, a nest will be fine. Unless it starts snowing. The cold makes my joints ache." He chuckled. "I sound like an old drake, but I am just shy of being 125." He shook his scales. "In the meantime, I should set to finding that dragon's cave. Perhaps bring some villagers with, and a wagon. I've noticed that dragons here in the West hoard more treasure than necessary compared to back home. We have what we need, or a little bit more."
