"Ah, right..." Sara felt a little embarassed for the common knowledge. But at the same time, she had not been close enough to a non-hostile dragon before so she felt like maybe she shouldn't feel as silly. "Of course we can assist you with that." She smiled, as she rallied a small group of five villagers who had some wagons. "Well, trade is always exciting with neighboring places. I can understand their need to collect. We don't grow many flowers here, so we have to buy them from the towns trade merchants passing through." Sara explained as she looked around. "Go ahead and lead the way, Makan."

Makan nodded. He wouldn't fly just yet, not until his wing was totally healed. In the meantime he would simply follow the old dragon's scent. The horses were spooked by his presence, but he settled them down by speaking the Draconic tongue-- a language that all living creatures innately understood.

As they continued the scent grew stronger. There were fewer animals in the area, even insects. This dragon's presence had frightened them away, and they would not return to this area until the scent was gone. It may be best to burn the scent away... Makan mentally mused. The village would be upset, but destruction is occasionally necessary for life to continue.

Sara gasped as the horses settled down within a few moments. "I didn't know dragons spoke horse!" One of the villagers interjected. "Is that something you learn?" The villagers began talking excitedly about communicating with animals nearby. As they followed Makan the quieter it got. "Why aren't there any animals up here? Didn't you kill the dragon that lived here? Shouldn't they be celebrating?" Sara looked around and nodded in agreement. "Yes, if the threat is gone, why do they still not come?"

"That is a story for another time," said Makan, referring to Draconic. "But the wyrm's scent still lingers. There is a way to get rid of it though... I would have to burn the entire forest down. I will not do that without consulting your elders."

Soon they could see a cave in the base of a mountain. The area was void of life, and the ground and stone was covered with scorch marks, and what looked like acid burns. "We have arrived." He took in another whiff of the air. "No other dragons are here. However, you all must wait here until I confirm that there isn't anything dangerous inside."

A few villagers groaned that they wouldn't get to hear an answer to their many questions. Surely when they got back...? "Burn it down?! Won't it take years to grow back, though?" A villager chimed, looking concerned. Makan was going to go in alone and Sara protested. "You're still healing. What if you run into something? There's no way for us to know if we should bring back up."

"Hence why I am not making a rash choice," said Makan. He went down into the cave. The air had a sulfurous odor, but not so much as to make the air unbreathable for a human. The atmosphere was hot, and humid. It must have been close to a magma vent. The air was comfortable to Makan, but it might be stifling for the humans.

He scoured the cave, but found nothing of interest to him. "It's safe to come down!" Makan called. "Bring your torches!"

The villagers looked towards one another before making their way towards the cave. A few of them fanned themselves with the temperature being slightly hotter than they were accustomed to. Catching up to him, they glanced around the large cave. "It looks pretty empty. What exactly did we come to look for again?" Someone questioned as they pulled their empty cart behind themselves. Sara looked over towards the wall and reached her hand out to feel the texture of the cave, surprised at the smooth feel of it.

Makan snorted. He took a deep breath before breathing a plume of flame. The fire illuminated the old dragon's hoard: gold, silver, precious metals, gems. Every sort of wealth had been collected and piled. "This is his hoard," Makan said simply. "Take as much as you can back to the village in the wagons. This should help your people."

The villagers that had come with them gasped. They had never seen so many precious stones and coin in on eplace. Without question they dd as he instructed, an donce they had cart fulls of the hoard, they made their way back. Sara watched as they left and then walked over towards Makan. "Are you going to continue to add to this?" She questioned, as she looked towards the piles of gold and treasures. "From what I know of you so far, and that's not too much...I take it you're going to brighten this place up with some kind of music, aren't you?" She smiled.

"I do not wish to make this my home," said Makan. "This place is filled with the stench of death. I have seen a cave further up the mountain that may be suitable. Once my wing is fit, I'll investigate it myself." Makan began moving part of the board aside.

Much of it was made up of gems. They reflected light better than most metals. Makan lifted a forepaw, murmuring quiet words in his own tongue. There was a flash of light, and the smaller part of the board was gone.

Sara cast a glance away as she took a few steps back. "..Right, I'm sorry." She looked towards the entrance. "You...look like you have everything handled here. I think I'll head outside. It's kind of warm in here and such." She dismissed herself and oncd outside, gave a soft sigh of relief.

Makan sighed quietly before following. What the dragon hadn't noticed was that a single scale from his tail fell loose as he walked out. The other villagers were on their way back already. The dragon paused. "No question about jewels just disappearing?" he asked Sara, chuckling a bit. He moved at a slower pace so that the woman wouldn't have to jog.

"I have to say, some of what I will tell you will challenge what you have been raised to think and believe, Miss Sara." He looked down at her. "As I have said, we dragons have been around since before mankind; my race was already old by the time your race was born."

Sara shook her head. "I mean I am curious obviously.." she didn't mind new ideas and she raised an eyebrow. "That's..to be expected." She carefully chose her words. "What do you want to tell me?"

"What you know about dragons is most likely false," said Makan. "Dragons have existed nearly as long as there has been a world to live in. We saw many extinctions... and even caused one. But dragons have come a long way since then. You see, when Man was young, and the Dragons already old, the wisest of our race took pity on humans. So they gave Man gifts-- the gift of language, the gift of farming. Man could build tools and shelters, but this helped them to flourish.

"But it was our last gift that was our undoing," Makan continued. "It was given by accident: fire. With fire in hand, Man could burn forests and villages, and make metal weapons. Although dragons' have long memories, humans do not. Within a hundred generations we were considered to be no more than dumb beasts here in the West; in the Far West and the East, we are still revered. But because dragons reproduce at a slower rate than humans, we could not replenish our population as fast as humans."

"I know this seems like an odd question..but once you give gifts, are you not able to take that back? Since you have been around longer?" Sara was rather surprised learning everytbing her people knew originated from dragons teaching her many ancestors.

"How does one take back words once they have been learned? How does one un-teach someone how to grow crops?" Makan mused. "Tell me how, Miss Sara." He continued walking. "Man learned to create fire by themselves, and so they used it as they would. It's the same as giving a child a sword. When taught correctly, they can use it well to protect their loved ones. If not, they will use it to murder and kill as they please. It's the same as the gifts we gave. You cultivate plants and animals for food and clothing, and you speak and write in your languages to communicate. Both can go very wrong."

"Well, I guess when you look at it that way I suppose it does seem rather naive for me to ask that..." She sighed. "I mean, it could just be a simple phasing out...Many things that we used to do have been lost with some of our ancestors, knowledge on how something might work or simply is. There are those instances, even though I know they are very few. Time is the biggest thing you have if you really wanted to take that back. But at that point, would that push for humans and dragons to have some kind of communicative relationship? With dragons having key to fire would it then revert humanity back some?" She looked up at him curiously.

"There is no way to take something so integral to a society away," said Makan. "Language may be lost, like if a culture is wiped out. But fire is something natural. Can I take away your air, Miss Sara? Or dry up the water your village depends upon? Dragons are affiliated with nature, but we are still from nature. We can no more destroy an element as a human can fly without growing wings or using magic."

Sara gave pause as she realized what she said sounded very implausible. "...You're right. Sorry." She sighed as they approached the village. The elders were looking at the wagons with wide eyes, and as Makan appeared, they looked at him with questioning eyes. "This is...a lot of treasures and materials for our village. Do you not desire some of this treasure with us?" He asked, curious. Another elder called Sara over and asked her to help gather some water for the horses. She nodded, and grabbed a few empty buckets, placing them onto a long rod and began walking to the river with a few smaller children making small chatter on the way.

"I have taken my share already," said Makan. "The rest should be distributed as evenly as possible throughout the community. Each family can use the gold and such as they wish, although I do encourage them to use it wisely." The dragon took a breath. "There is a matter I wish to discuss with the elders here in the village."
