The elders relayed the information for it to be distributed evenly and everyone came out to start sorting things. The elders gathered and looked up at Makan. "You wanted to speak with us?" An elder woman asked. "Thank you again for sharing what was in that dragon's lair." Another elder said with a slight bow.

Makan nodded. "You are most welcome," he said. He cleared his throat. "This is a matter of great importance. While that dragon is dead, his scent will linger in his cave and territory for many seasons. As long as his scent remains, wildlife will not return, and meat will be scarce. I have only one solution, which is why I wished to discuss before carrying it out.

"The only way to get rid of the scent is to burn every inch of the old dragon's territory."

"And...how far did his territory extend?" One elder asked, curiously. "Naturally this is our only option, but we would need to know just how far his mark went, and plan accordingly for food. I know this is rather sudden and we have questions. How long would it take for the wildlife to start frequenting that area again?"

"The territory of a dragon can be over a hundred square miles," informed Makan. "But for practical reasons, I would only burn the areas near your village. The burned plants will create fertile soil, and eventually animals will return. That may take a year or so to happen, but it would be faster than waiting for the wyrm's scent to fade."

"Why only the areas near here? Given to what you've said will that small area growing encourage animals to come back if not all of its scent is removed?"

Sara was by now returning with the children who were giggling beside her as they filled the horses troughs. "Alright, looks good you guys!" She smiled. Glancing over, she saw that the elders and Makan were still in conversation and decided to grab a small harp and play a gentle melody since she enjoyed the occasoonal breeze that was making its way through today.

Makan slowly nodded. "I see your point," he said. In truth, he was being cautious. "Once I have returned to full strength, I will begin. I ask that everyone in the village will be alert, since sparks may carry to the village on the wind. The last thing you need are homes burning down."

When the meeting adjourned, Makan found himself drawn to Sara's music once again. He settled down in the grass near her, his tail curling around his body. "Tell me, Miss Sara," he inquired, "do you know the song Scarborough Fair?"

Sara smiled as Makan joined her company. She gave pause to what she was playing and thought about his request. "I do actually! It's just been some time since I last played it. So forgive me if it isn't exactly right." She hummed along for a few moments trying to place the correct rhythm. "Are you going to sing along with me, Makan?" She offered before she began playing the song, singing along where it came in and gently plucking the strings on her harp. When there was a moment in the song to rest, she blinked. "Does this song mean something to you?" She asked, curious.

"Nothing in particular," said Makan. "But I do enjoy it." He ushered someone to play on the pipe as well, and began singing. His voice was a strong baritone. His words and tone were clear, so that people could make out his words from some distance away.

Villagers were drawn in by the music, even those still wary of the dragon. Makan didn't realize the crowd gathering around him until he finished singing, and the people clapped. He couldn't blush like a human, but the fins on his body blushed. The dragon bowed.

Sara beamed towards Makan as she gave a slight bow as well. She stood and gave Makan an affectionate pat. "Looks like you've got yourself a small fan club." She teased. As the people moved around, a few children were interested in Makan's tail, poking at it with their fingers, and small twigs. "Is it alright if I sleep with you again, Makan?" Sara asked rubbing the back of her head. "I know that sounds awkward, but I slept pretty well last night and I figured the company was nice for you and all, you know?"

"It was nice to have company," admited Makan. He swished his tail back and forth, like a cat trying to amuse her kittens. "I haven't slept alongside someone since I left my home. Dragon families are quite close when younglings are around." It felt good to teach someone who was so eager to listen.

Sara smiled. "Good. I'll be right back!" She went into one of the homes nearby and came back with a blanket before she sat down next to Makan and leaned against him and closed her eyes. "Do you have siblings, Makan?" She was incredibly curious about him. The children giggled and were lured into chasing his tail as he swayed it back and forth.

"An elder sister, but I had not seen or heard from her in a long while before I left," said Makan. "Last I had heard, she was learning one of your religions here in the West. She finds human religions so fascinating for some reason. He couldn't help but chuckle at the children's antics. "What about you, Miss Sara? Why not stay at home tonight? You have family, right?"

"Hmmm, interesting!" Sara blinked and raised an eyebrow. "This might be silly, but what are you interested in?" He asked about her family and she nodded. "Of course. I have a younger sister and then my parents and grandma." She shrugged. "And because you don't have anyone here to sleep with. Unless you don't want the company tonight?" She raised an eyebrow.

"No," said Makan. "I am glad of the company." He tapped his chin for a moment. "To ask what I am interested in would require enough breath that I could power a sailboat for a day." He chuckled. "But to make it simple, I am a lover of the arts: music, writing, and the like. Then there is the natural world around us. I particularly enjoy the night sky.

"Dragons have charted the stars in the heavens, but I still enjoy stargazing nonetheless." Makan closed his eyes for a moment.

"The sky at night is pretty interesting. There's plenty of things to see and look at out there." She smiled. "Have you ever written anything, Makan? Or composed any songs?" She was curious. "I've tried my hand at composing a bit but I don't think I myself have tried to write anything." Sara laughed.

"No songs," said Makan. "Although I can sing, I can't read music very well. And penning stories and poetry is quite difficult, so I have not done much." He wasn't telling the whole truth; Makan had a way to write, but he wouldn't reveal that.

The dragon sighed. "Despite not having any religions," he said, "we dragons do believe in an afterlife; or rather, we know there is one." Makan blinked the transparent, nictitating membranes over his eyes. "Do you believe in a life after death, Miss Sara? Just out of curiosity."

"Oh? I'm surprised, actually." She commented as she gave a yawn. "Me? Well, sort of. Yeah. It might just be because of my village and how we think of everything in a sense being connected or able to exist with another. It sounds weird once you put it into words, but basically yes. Because even if our physical form deteriorates, our essence still lives on not only in the people around us, but in the space that our body once occupied long after decay."

Makan nodded. "We dragons do have an afterlife," he said. "In our bodies is what is called a heartstone. It contains our thoughts and memories, and ultimately, our soul. When a dragon passes, they can live on to some degree in their heartstone. Or, a dragon can choose to expel their heartstone before death. When the body dies, the soul returns to the stone.

"But there is what is called the Dragon's Heaven," he continued. "In the night sky is the constellation Draco. To men, they are gems in the sky. But for us, it is where our ancestors reside. Occasionally they come back, in the form of meteors or shooting stars."

Makan shook his head. "Ah, you got me babbling," he chuckled apologetically. "But I am glad to teach someone so willing to learn."

Sara put a hand under her chin thoughtfully. "Huh. That's pretty neat, actually." She smiled "What happens when some other creature, dragon, creature, or human finds the heartstone?" She asked, and giggled. "Sorry I have so many questions." She cleared her throat and watched as the village began settling down as the sky began settling itself. She also wondered when the forest was burned, would they have to live somewhere else temporarily until things got better? Or would the elders have them stake it out here.

"It depends on the dragon who resides in the heartstone," Makan said simply. "Physical death can take a great toll on one's psyche, even if they pass peacefully. If the dragon is in an ill state of mental health, there is no telling. While they lack a body, a dragon's soul in a heartstone can still use magic. They may see fit to kill whomever finds the heartstone. But if their mind is clear they will judge the person or creature who has found it. This can involve speaking directly, or reading memories. The latter can be quite forceful and mentally invasive."
