So I imagine for any warhammer, or 40k fans particularly, most have seen, heard of, or even played the new Battlefleet Gothic: Armada game which is a real-time strategy video game developed by Tindalos Interactive and published by Focus Home Interactive. That came out just under a week ago. I got it around the time it came out and fell in love wit hit. More importantly, it gave me an idea.

RPG usually sports a few Warhammer 40K Rp's now and again, some dealing with a Black Crusade, centered around a specific race, faction,e or event. Few though I've seen deal with the largest and easily most important battlefield in Warhammer 40K. The void itself. So inspired by Fall of Orpheus and of course Gothic Armada. (both IP's)

I'm setting out a basic interest check to see how many, if any, are interested in a Warhammer Rp set of course in 40K, primarily dealing with the 12 Black Crusade in the Gothic sector. I'm looking for players but also for a co-gm(s) of any willing since while I am a huge fan of 40K I hardly count myself as a Loremaster of the setting. Still I want to try my hand with a Rp that mainly focuses around each player playing the part of a Commodores or Admiral seeking to stem the massive tide that is Abaddon's Black Crusade. If there is enough interest we could vote to have it also spread out a bit more to encompass the other races as playable too, I'm open to any idea's people might have. ^^

This could be High Casual or Advanced depending on what people feel most comfortable with. I usually do advanced myself.

I like the idea of maybe having eldar and dark eldar corsairs and ork pirates fucking with our fleets and being a pain as npc's. But I feel like this game would be better served by having all of the players on the same team. Playing Imperial navy or space marine strike fleets. that would keep up maximum interaction between the players and not encourage anyone to be off doing their own thing in the corner.

And races like Tau and tyranids should obviously be left out because they make no sense in the context of the twelfth black crusade. I only add that because I guarantee if this makes it to an OOC page. Someone is going to drop in and ask to play some lone ranger tau admiral who inexplicably managed to get his fleet half a galaxy away from where the tau empire is.

Because player characters.......

Good points, I do like the idea of the players starting off as Admiral's (note an imperial admiral is below a High Admiral and they oversee a single battlegroup) each controlling a number of ships; i.e battlegroup. That way right off the bat we can smoothly intorduce everyone via war meeting. As for the battlegroups themselves, not counting escort squads, I'm looking for a similar setup to the game this is inspired by to decide each player fleets make up. So something along these lines.

Battleships (250 pt)
Battle Cruisers (200 pt)
Cruisers (155 pt)
Light Cruiser (105 pt)
Escort (50 pt)

Take note I might revise these values, later on, I also decided to go with each player commanding a battle group rather than a single ship as most would just pick a battleship or battle cruiser leaving NPC's to pick up needed roles anyway. Also, we'll be starting party high as far as points go which would be on the 700 point mark. The idea is given the nature of the conflict being largely one of attrition. Players will slowly be losing ships as time goes on rather than getting larger fleets as time passes. Which should make for a rather dire predicament later on. Which of course gives the excuse to work with other battle groups more.

Still I'm really thinking smaller battle groups is best (as opposed to the much larger ones from table top) as that will make it easier for players to flesh out each ship as far as their captains go at least.

Also, yes, to clarify the major factions expected will be Eldar Corsairs, Ork raiders, and Human pirates/traitors. Plus the chaos fleet which is a given. So sadly no Necron's, or Nids in the near future. If we go all the players in the Imperial Navy (which I most likely will) you guys will have your hands full as it is. :P

@Jbcool Awesome, will be happy to have you aboard. Will be sending you a PM soon.

Question. Since we are basing this on the board/video game of the same name. How if at all are we handling the concept of ship customization?

One possibility is having a variety of roles open: so one or two players can play admirals, one or two players can play commodores or captains in an admiral's battlegroup, someone can be an astartes or an Inquisitorial ship or battlegroup, etc?

Well, customization is of course allowed as long as it makes sense. Personalizing one's flagship makes sense to me.

Hmmm, that could work if people can work out what roles they want to play.

Well the gothic sector alone hast at least a dozen different admirals below the rank of Lord Admiral. One for each subsector and a few extra junior admirals. Plus all of the reinforcement fleets from neighbouring systems are called in.

There are plenty of admiral spots. And I think one person only being able to command one ship is going to be kind of limited next to the guy who lords over half dozen or more.

And there are nearly fifty different patterns of ships to compose a strike fleet out of. I don't think options are ever going to be limited

I suppose i should have been clearer. Are we doing upgrades like the video game does ship upgrades? Small buffs and technologies we pull strings to have fitted onto ships in our fleet.

I can't think of a way of making such upgrades anyway meaningful in RPG setting so upgrades are not really going to be a thing. I might have it instead take the form of perks.

So we seem to have 6 people all gung-ho for this assuming no one leaves before things kick off. How large of a group do the GM's think will be the most appropriate for gameplay?
