Deep in the heart of the Old Country lies a kingdom long-thought defunct: the Empire of Bones. Hundreds of years ago, the Empire of Bones waged war against the entire continent, only to be defeated by an army of brave soldiers and legendary heroes. In a final, decisive battle, the Lich King was slain and his kingdom sank underneath the earth, never to be seen again.

Recently, however, it seems that strange and evil changes have been going through the Old Country. The sinkhole that used to be the Lich King's kingdom has miraculously turned into an immense mountain that none have ever returned from. The kingdoms surrounding the Old Country, worried that these rumors might be true, have sent you to investigate.

Geography of the Old Country and Surroundings

The Old Country used to be an enormous breadbasket of gently-rolling plains and meadows. After the Lich King began his unholy crusade, the Old Country rapidly changed for the worse. Now, the Old Country is a massive network of peat bogs and shadowy forests dotted with peaceful undead settlements.

The Old Country is partially landlocked, connecting to the ocean on the south border.
The country to the north, Bella, is generally flat, dotted with many lakes and gentle sloping ridges.
The country to the west, Polarus, is mountainous and rich with ore. People live in the lowlands to the north, quietly eking out a living from the country's primeval forests and coasts.
The country to the east, Ruritania, occupies most of the continent, and has a surprising variety of biomes to it. With forests on the west border, steppes on the south border, and enormous taigas occupying most of the north border and center, the east country is home to a wide variety of hardy peoples.

The Lich King's Curse

Anything that dies in the Old Country is turned undead on the spot, and will revive within 24 hours. However, this effect will not persist outside the Old Country's borders. Undead that leave the Old Country will immediately suffer a second death, and cannot be revived.

Those that have become undead in the Old Country are, for the most part, completely identical to their living selves. However, they still rot like any other corpse. Undead are physically incapable of dying: a zombie that is reduced to a skeleton will still live on, and a skeleton that has been burned to ash will still exist as a ghost.

In the Lichberg, however, things are different. All wayward souls are immediately forced into the Lich King's army. Anyone who dies within the Lichberg will rise again with a burning hatred for the living and an overriding compulsion to guard it from invaders. Undead who enter the Lichberg will not be immediately turned to the Lich King's side, but will convert the moment they are defeated in battle.

Rules

  • Remember to have fun. Make choices and design an adventure that will be most fun for you and the other players. The quickest way to drive away a player is to make sure that they're not getting any entertainment from posting in the RP.
  • If you have an issue, feel free to post it in the OOC! I'd recommend taking really personal matters to PMs, however.
  • If you haven't posted in a few days, you will be tagged in a post in the OOC asking what's up!

Few questions. About how powerful/influential are our starting characters, and how much creative license do we have with their stories?

Your character can be as influential as you want them, but please don't make them too powerful. I'd like it if all the characters were roughly at the same level of power.

You have quite a bit of creative license with your story. It can be pretty much anything, so long as it doesn't directly contradict another person's story and actually have a reason for your character to be exploring the Lichberg.

I'd like to know, too.

Also, dibs on a huge speech-impaired orc berserker. :-)

I'll post my character tomorrow. It's past midnight here in Europe, so I am not really in the right mindset to make one now.

@Sigurd, I'm pretty sure it is considered good etiquette to post your cs in the ooc first before placing it in the character tab. Just saying.

Name
Alia Flori

Race
Human

Personality
Alia is rather polite at first impression, usually starting off with formal greetings. Alia is also friendly, willing to talk to others without hesitation and strike up conversations.

Background
Alia was born to and raised by a local spellcaster whose wife passed away during childbirth. Alia discovered at a young age that she possessed the ability to use magic. Naturally, her father took it upon himself to teach her what he knew about magic. Unfortunately, he didn't really know much about magic, just simple spells like moving rocks and setting things alight. Alia learned all these spells with ease, and it became obvious that she had not even come close to reaching the pinnacle of her abilities. With no one else to teach her, however, Alia was unsure of how to hone her talent, nor what her limits were.

So, Alia said her goodbyes to her father and left home, looking for any other spellcasters who were willing to teach her. Time passed, with Alia looking for a mentor. Her journey was not without obstacles and perils, but Alia managed to learn how to fend for herself with both a knife and her magic. Eventually, she managed to find a spellcaster who definitely knew a lot more than she did. Alia asked the spellcaster to teach her how to be a proper spellcaster herself, and, after a rather tricky and cliche lesson, the spellcaster accepted.

A few years was spent with Alia under the spellcaster's guidance. In that few years, however, Alia learned very quickly about how magic was used, and how tricky it was to be the spellcaster's apprentice. Alia strove to succeed, and she ultimately did. The spellcaster finally admitted that there was nothing more to teach Alia, and they said their farewells to each other. Alia was left to travel again, but this time she had no destination. Alia decided that life was going to be full of surprises, so she might as well see what there was to surprise her with.

Abilities
Alia is very competent with magic, able to perform a variety of basic tasks with her magic. Setting things alight, moving boulders out of the way, blasting enemies with shards of ice or a bolt of lightning, etc. With more effort and time to cast, she can cast more complex spells with multiple elements and processes, though it would tax her fairly heavily. Alia is also capable of using healing magic, though she can only perform basic healing (cuts and bruises), so she can't substitute for a full-fledged priest/healer.

Equipment
-Magic staff, for spellcasting, obviously. Made out of a durable wood and has a dark round stone at one end.
-Magic wand, in case something happens to her staff. Made of wood and has a gem-like stone at the end.
-Provisions, for herself. Dried foods and other things that don't spoil easily, mainly.

@Scarifar, I like your character's background! However, I do have a request before I accept you: could you please list what spells your character knows? Limiting their experiences to "basic spells" tells me very little, and I'm a bit curious about what the limits of her abilities are.

OK, so, my idea of a "basic spell" involves manipulating some element of nature, usually to fire off an attack. You know, casting a fireball, shooting a bolt of lightning, creating a gust of wind, etc. Capable of killing a regular human with enough force and/or if struck in the right place (not necessarily instantly), but not really felling a tree or obliterating a boulder with a single blast (thought it would put a decent hole in either one). Also, things like levitating small objects and healing scratches are basic spells. These can be casted pretty much instantly with a single word or thought.

For more complex spells like creating wards or making a person invisible, or even just putting more force behind basic spells, Alia would need more concentration and energy to cast such spells, ultimately tiring her out fairly quickly if she continues to cast such spells continuously. Even then, there are certain types of magic Alia never learned how to use, like the more powerful types of healing magic, and magic to summon familiars, etc, so she's not some all-powerful magician.

Is that enough of an explanation?

Bumped the Interest Check thread because I figured we'd need a couple more players. No one else has come into the OOC section yet.

I'm definitely interested in this, and will probably start working on my character as soon as possible (tonight, or tomorrow). I do have one question though, I don't know if I've missed this, but what races are there to play? I know that somebody else has done an orc that has been accepted, so are we talking the traditional, dwarves, orcs, halflings, elves, etc?
