Welcome everyone! This will be a sci-fi military role play set in the universe of David Drake's Hammers Slammers, an armored mercenary regiment. This is going to be more free form than many rp's and I encourage you to improvise elements of the plot at will. If something is too out there I will reign it in.

This is a military themed RP and it will be correspondingly graphic, you have been warned.

Since we are collectively taking on the role of a regiment, should we create battalion or company sized elements?

We are taking the role of a detachment of the regiment only. I think platoon sized elements will be more than sufficient, at least in the opening stages.

I've been doing some research on the Hammer's Slammers universe. I am curious about weapons, vehicles and organization. I intend to do an Infantry Platoon. I have found a platoon organization consisting of the Command element (PL, PSG & two other enlisted soldiers) and four 10-man rifle squads. It also says the platoon has skimmers and M9 Combat Cars. These open topped air cushioned combat cars have room for four people; the driver and three gunners operating 30mm Light Machine Guns (Powerguns). In the images I have seen for the M9 Combat Car, there appear to be no room for dismounted infantry. It appears they all fight, not as infantry but as "gunners". Given that there are only four men in a Combat Car, I would interpret a squad as having two M9 Combat Cars and one skimmer for the remaining two members of the squad. Therefore, the platoon would consist of 44 soldiers, eight M9 Combat Cars and six skimmers. The skimmers appear to be a small 2-person ATV that could serve as a Buzzbomb carrier for anti-armor purposes. I earnestly sought out some form of Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) or Armored Personnel Carrier (APC), but could not locate any. All the infantry vehicles are glorified versions of "gun jeeps". Does this sound about right? If so, this is the platoon I am looking at.

I've seen infantry referred to as riding small one man skimmers with gun jeeps that carry heavier weapons such as mortars. Combat cars seem to be deployed in separate units. There don't appear to be dedicated APCs.

So are we each creating a whole platoon for ourselves then, is that the idea?

We can each create a platoon or smaller detachment. The story will begin with a pretty devastating ambush however and out numbers will be substantially thinned out. I plan on creating an already under strength platoon of combat cars and its going to lose even more in the opening moments of the story.

I've been working on an Infantry platoon mounted on Skimmers as the Hammer's Slammers storyline suggests. They are more of a Dragoon type unit. I currently have them at full strength -- 46 soldiers, but can thin them out now or in the opening scenes of the RP. The Platoon is equipped with six A21 Jeeps and 32 Skimmers. Two of the jeeps are for 3 people, which includes the Platoon Leader and the Platoon Sergeant. The remaining four Jeeps are two-person vehicles, equipped with either an Automatic Grenade Launcher or a Buzz Bomb Anti-Armor Weapon.

Do you guys have a notion of what your ranks will be? Obviously with me as a noncom you are likely to be senior. There is a captain in overall command of the taskforce but he can be an npc if necessary

2nd Platoon, D Company, 2nd battalion has been posted for your review. I have chosen the First Squad Leader, Sergeant Auggie Kunst to be my Main Character. The rest are all NPCs

Looking good Gunther. The only thing I would add is weaponry wise. Slammers infantry carry 2cm powerguns and 1cm sub-machine gun variants as primary armaments.

Powerguns powerguns fire a burst of copper plasma at a significant fraction of the speed of light. Copper ions are held in alignment in thin plastic wafers which are fed throuthrough the weapon in a similar fashion to a conventional round.

Power gun bolts are cyan streaks of almost blinding intensity. They vent their energy on the first thing they hit so their penetration is poor in forests and the like.

Powerguns come in a number of calibres. 1cm pistols and submachine guns, 2cm shoulder weapons. The 3cm tribarrels(basically 50 cals) and the 30cm main guns of tanks. The power to calibre ratio is logarithmic.
