I caused a tear in the fabric of space.

Or really, just me playing around with digital paint. Didn't turn out half bad I guess but I wish I'd made the resolution higher. For the digital painters out there (if there are any) how many pixels per inch is recommended for stuff like this?

Depends on what you're looking to do. If you ever want to go to print then you'll need at least 150-300dpi. (Depending on the medium and the color content.) As far as physical size/dimensions goes, the larger the better -- you can always downsize later, but you can rarely upscale without quality becoming an issue.

For a piece going to print, I'll usually work at 300 (+) dpi and dimension of at least 4,000px X 4,000px. (Even for smaller-sized products. It makes it easy to paint all the little details in and you never have to worry about quality when you work large.)

Thanks much!

Maybe if I get good enough I can even pay for my college tuition.

But probably not.

Might I suggest giving watercolors a shot?

I think you'd be pleasantly surprised at how well something like this can turn out with a few washes of watercolor.

Yes. Well. See. I used to paint but since I live in a tiny dorm room with 2 other people there's not a lot of space for artsy stuff. Perhaps I will take to it in the future though.

That one's pretty damn cool.

I always liked art of planets and solar systems and the like.

Tyvm.
I'm fascinated with outer space, maybe I'll make it a series called "stuff I did while zoning out in class".
Maybe I should put it in the Theology paper I'm supposed to write tomorrow.
