Before I state how I go about finding a RP. I should probably note that this is all from my experience being a NRP Section only member of the Guild. So a lot of my lingo may be unfamiliar for those who don't travel to that nerdy section of the forums.
So, in finding a RP that suits me I immediately look for a few things.
1. Does the setting fit me: I usually only RP in historical and or alt-historical settings, though I certainly dabble into 'Pseudo-Earth' RPs as well. This is 100% a preference sort of thing but I will admit it definitely restricts me as most NRPs are set in high fantasy and Sci-Fi settings that I have no interest in. Thus I usually hop right on to historical NRPs when they appear.
2. Does my style of writing fit the RP: When it comes to NRPs especially I format all of my posts in a non-character style. Thus I rarely write from the perspective of characters and instead from what I call 'history book' style, in which all events are being written out as though the writer knows all future events as well as current events. That may sound strange but my writing career started with AARs on the Paradox Forums so that's where I am most comfortable. Note this is purely a Nation RP issue, in character rps I usually don't have to fear my style coming across as unwanted or outlandish.
3. Do I like the RPers who have joined: This sounds rude but trust me, it isn't meant that way. If I see people I know and have RPed with in the past, I am certainly more likely to join as I'm more comfortable with those people than entirely new groups. It makes my anxiety about keeping my post quality and allows me to more easily settle in and enjoy writing. However I certainly step out of my comfort zone and meet new and fantastic people when 1 & 2 are met.
A lot of this probably sounds REALLY nitpicky and stupid. That or makes no sense since like, maybe 20 people actually go onto the NRP section.
