"Closest Elementals?" Paulie whispered, looking down at his glove. "Clarence always did say something about... Pharie... I thought it was just a bunch of religious hooey or something. That doesn't really help us though... If only Big bro was here..." Paulie grabbed his head and shook it back and forth. "Damn it!"

Jenso frowned at Paulie. "Hey, don't worry man..We're gonna find a way to beat those golems! I guarantee it!" Jenso muttered. "You say those golems are attracted to magical artifacts, so...that probably means Pharie's meteor is further up north too. It's the thing the elementals use to communicate." Jenso told Paulie.

"Meteor? Do you mean the Pharie Ice shrine?" Paulie asked, pulling his glove away from his face. "Is it like.. A Huge blue and black orb?"

"Yeah!" Jenso shouted. "Well, the one from Orobo village was orange with black, but it would make sense that this one would be blueish since Pharie is the water elemental.." Jenso responded to Paulie. "I wouldn't be surprised that the golems use Pharie's magic to sustain themselves along with any other magical stuff they have. Maybe they weakened her up to the point where she could no longer control the weather here.."

"Pharie has been out of tune with nature for years. Her orb has been trapped in black ice, long before I was even born. There's no way those golems are using her meteor thing yet, but... If they were to break through the ice..." Paulie shook his head and turned back towards his brother's grave. Suddenly, several screeches rang through the snow-covered clearing. It was the warbly birds, and it came from beyond the hills! Looking in the direction, one of the birds was fleeing towards them, but something large began to hulk forwards and grabbed the bird with its steel-blue hand, like it was a small toy. The crunch of bones sounded as Paulie turned to witness this. Paulie dashed towards Jenso and pulled him up onto his feet. "Jenso, we have to run!"

"But, you and the Warbly birds are in danger!" Jenso shouted, and got in a combat stance. "Get outta here with the Warbly birds Paulie, I'll keep it busy!" He shouted, preparing himself for the incoming golem.

"They're all dead Jenso!" Paulie shouted, "Warbly birds don't get very quiet when they're scared!" He kept running, but something rose from the ground between him and the lake. It was a smaller humanoid golem that was barely any taller than Paulie or Jenso, but its head was near the middle of its chest, and its rocky body was bright blue. It struck forward at Paulie and knocked him across the clearing. Paulie landed near the fire, and a spray of dirt and snow put it out. The golem coming over the hill was nearly 10 meters tall, and its arms were a meter thick. It began to creep closer, dwarfing Jenso completely despite its slow speed.

"Paulie!" Jenso shouted, as his friend was knocked away. He stared at the incoming giant for a moment, and then back at the smaller golem. "Come on, bring it!" He shouted, and dashed forward. He aimed to punch the smaller golem in the face.

Jenso's fist crashed against the Golem's face but inflicted no damage whatsoever. Jenso's fist felt an icy power fill his hand though, as if it were slowly being frozen. He pulled his hand back and launched it at Jenso with extreme force behind his blow.

Jenso quickly reeled his fist back, hoping it would stop freezing. Just how strong were these golems? Were they going to kill him and Paulie? It was all he could think about as the golem readied his fist. 'No!..I won't give up! If I can get this golem out of the way, we can escape!' He thought, as a surge of power rushed through him. He attempted to move to the left to avoid the golem's fist, and aimed a quick kick at the right side of the golem's head with his left foot.

Jenso's kick struck home, but left nothing but a series of small cracks alongside the golem's head, which immediately repaired themselves as if nothing had happened. The golem took this chance to grab Jenso out of midair with its left arm, and begin freezing his entire body. Everything started to go dark as his body was overtaken by ice magic, and as he passed out, he caught a glimpse of Paulie lying unconscious on top of Clarence's grave.

Chapter 22

Bits, Bites, And Golemites

Jenso awoke to bars of ice that surrounded him and reached from the ceiling to the floor. He was trapped in a relatively large cage that looked like it was meant for something much bigger. Looking past the bars, he appeared to be in a large light blue room made entirely of ice. Was this the ice fortress? A strange warmth overtook his body before he had a chance to think about this, which was strange, considering that his jacket was missing.

Across the cage there was a small group of small worm-like creatures, at least 5 of them, latched onto something furry with little white tendrils that came from their mouths. Upon further inspection, it appeared to be Paulie's Glove. What the hell were they doing to it?

The rest of the room was empty, but there was a large set of partially transparent doors on the other end that leader further into the fortress.

Jenso blinked as he woke up. 'Wow, this is weird..' Jenso thought. He looked around at the cage and inspected the bars to see how wide they were and if it were possible to slip through and escape. He began to remember just what happened. 'Paulie..I hope they didn't- I need to get out of here as soon as possible!' He thought.

As Jenso's body began to cool down again, one of the small blue worms detached itself from Paulie's glove and slunk towards him with its mouth now open, and its small tendrils whirling about erratically.

Jenso glared at the worm as it came to him. He kept a close eye on it's tendrils as it came close. He moved towards it's side to avoid it from latching onto him and aimed a kick at it with his foot.

Jenso's Kick launched the little worm a few feet away, but it simply returned to following him, and within moments, the other 4 worms did the same, abandoning the glove, which was now in pieces.

Jenso moved back so the 4 incoming worms would be grouped up and he would get more distance between himself and them, and turned towards the first worm that he launched away. He attempted to move to it's side and grab it. He tried to push it's tendrils against one of the bars of the cell, hoping it would absorb the bar.

Upon grabbing the worm, its tendrils immediately twirled backwards and latched onto Jenso's wrist, and the other four worms caught up with him quicker than he might've expected. He felt a draining feeling overtake his arm, like his energy was being sucked out. Along with this, the golemite's icy body began to freeze his skin.

Jenso frowned as he felt the energy leave his body. "That's IT! Now I'm sick of this!" He roared, as anger overwhelmed him. His friend Paulie was either dead or captured, and he had no intention of losing again. He attempted to shake the worm off of him, and dashed towards one of the walls of the cage as power rushed through him. He leaped high into the air towards the bars of the cage, pushing his feet off of it with great strength to launch him down into the group of worms. He aimed to straight-up crush them using his weight and high speed.

Jenso's feat was not quite enough. Though the Golemites cracked and crunched, their injuries repaired themselves within seconds, and one after another, they latched onto Jenso's body using their tendrils. The cold feeling began to overwhelm him again, like it had in the lake earlier that day. Raw strength wouldn't win this one. Jenso had to think, and focus. What would Lark do in a situation like this?

"Arcane energy is the base of all matter and, well, energy! Fire, water, earth, air, you can potentially do anything with it if your body's capable. Most magical people have a certain affinity though, based on their arcane energy"

A certain affinity... If only Jenso could focus...
