A Hero Tale

Introduction

Welcome to the official Hero Tale Interest Check thread. I've had several people come to me, curious about 'A Hero Tale' already, and I'm enjoying what I've been participating in so far. Needless to say, I'm always looking forward to more Hero Tales, so I decided to make an interest check for it.

Basics

A Hero Tale is a 1x1 Hero's Journey RP, wherein a character of your choice is pulled into the role of a hero after being faced with an insurmountable danger that ravages their home. You will be playing the Hero as they are before their transformation, Mundane but not without abilities that surpass what most know as normality. Considering the nature of 1x1 RP's, there is room for you to have multiple hero-like characters, but the primary focus is put on whomever you choose to lead the story, and the trials that they will face in the days to come. In most circumstances though, I usually take the role of all NPCs, so that you can focus on the growth of your character(s), offering as dynamic a cast as I can.

Ah, and magic will always play a part, as this is usually a very fantasy-oriented type of roleplay.

Details

Hero Tales start off with a basic catalyst in the form of disastrous conflict, an unknown entity striking cataclysm into your way of life, and pushing you to your limits as you are at the story's beginning. Typically, these encounters are meant to plant seeds from which your character grows, whether it be through a desire for revenge, or a genuine lust for adventure.

Following this Catalyst arc, the story follows a relatively basic series of chapters, along which your character(s) will be faced with trials that force them to learn about not only their dormant powers, but clarity in their resolve. Relationships gained and lost throughout the RP will play a large part in what kind of Hero each character becomes. The primary theme of this RP series is to promote growth. That being said, static characters do not do very well in these settings.

Ultimately, A Hero Tale will depict your character(s) evolution from a mundane nobody, to a hero that plays a massive role in the future of his world. You will meet friends, enemies, and possibly lovers, I merely offer a series of paths for your to take, and of course, events for you to tackle.

It should be noted that this RP will involve a fair amount of combat, and a large cast of characters to keep track of, but one of the biggest things about A Hero Tale, is that I try to adapt to each individual's style and desires. If you prefer combat, there will be more combat, if you prefer interaction, there will be more characters, if you prefer adventure, there will be more intense environments. Furthermore, I try to adapt to the skill level of whomever I'm role playing with. This can vary from Free to High casual, and perhaps on some occasions, advanced. This means that posts can vary from one liners, to several paragraphs, but I try not to overwhelm anyone with post length or redundancy.

Being a 1x1 RP format, I also strongly encourage feedback and discussion for what you would like to do with your characters, what world you would like this story to take place in, etc. The only static factors between all Hero Tales, is the lead antagonizing force, and the universal theory that comes with them.

Idk what are you on the mood for? I'm in the mood for some fantasy or sci-fi which do you prefer?

@RyuShura I'm a little peculiar. Often times I like to mix the two, which is very strange, but I have a huge bias for Fantasy, and it's a lot more my speed. The antagonizing force I use from A Hero Tale is accustom to a Fantasy setting, but both are applicable. More often than not, the setting just creates itself as the story progresses.

A mix of both is always fun! Umm let me see.. I like gritty universes too. Maybe we can do some post-apocalyptic setting, where magic is untamed and evil monsters roam the lands? Perhaps there are different races that live in hiding from them? One where the hero is involved somehow in fixing whats broken about the world?

How do these usually start off? Do you just make the setting and I simply make the character?

Typically I would handle the setting, yes, but if you prefer to have more involvement and input, I'm totally open to ideas. I do however handle much, if not all of the plot. A bit of mystery, lack of spoilers and all that jazz.

You would make the hero (Or Heroes, if you prefer to have multiple hero characters throughout) and I would do anything else that you wouldn't want reign over. You could also create non-hero side characters, if you'd like to have more control over the interaction, but that would be up to you of course. Typically, they start off with your main character going about his/her day to day life, whether it's rough, solo, with friends, however you'd like it to start off. Within the first few chapters, you'll be greeted by a pretty blatant antagonizing force which I'll use to contrast your character completely depending on their personality. During this encounter, your character may find that he has innate powers that he can only access briefly, or if you'd prefer a less power-oriented growth curve, would gain access to abilities through other means later on. This first encounter always results in a crippling defeat, and often nets some brutal losses, or a bruised ego, depending on who you find yourself against. From there, your character would make his first major decision which dictates exactly how their path begins.

For example, one character might seek vengeance, and the power to enact that vengeance either through training himself, finding a mentor, looking for artifacts, etc.

Another character may be crippled by the defeat, and go through an arc to regain their confidence before they even decide to enter their primary 'origins arc' so to speak.

The options are limitless, and ultimately, up to you and how your character acts.

I like the post-apocalyptic idea, and I'm already brimming with scenarios! In a setting like this, where monsters and magic are dangers rather than accessible resources/allies, your character might either be well adapted to survival and danger before he gains access to any otherworldly abilities, or find themselves under the protective watch of another group/individual, perhaps an older sibling or parent, or a group of friends, something along those lines?

I see... I get this more now! Thanks for the detail.

I definitely don't want to interfere with your juicy plot. I want it to be a surprise! :^) Hmm, I was imagining that magic is incredibly powerful in this world... but it comes at a cost. Perhaps internal change in the user? Tainting them? Maybe magic is drawn from their darkest emotions and if abused, corrupts them from the inside and out? It would be fun to have that internal dynamic as he makes choices. Only a few can use it, but those who do are tasked with a grave duty or something. Can there be a band of these users who combat this evil? 'Knights' perhaps? I want to develop a strong theme of friendship.

Of course, after the main character goes through the introduction.

@RyuShura I very much enjoy the concept of restraining faults behind using magic. It would give these knights or however they may be labeled a much larger burden than simply defending the weak or trying to eradicate dangerous creatures. Perhaps two different sects, and internal conflict risen from what emotions they draw upon? Darker, more twisted magic incites a far more gruesome or rapid transformation in humans, and the alternative, pulling on brighter emotions or experiences might have less of an effect, or more of an emotional corruption, alla necromancy V.S. elemental magic. If your hero allows himself to be consumed by things like revenge, greed, pride etc, he may find himself falling into a very unfavorable denomination, and vice versa if he sticks to his righteous instinct. There's potential for redemption if he dips too far into darker magic as well.

As always, I think it's important to distinguish between Arcane, and Ki, where Ki focuses on physical abilities, and the Arcane covers all magical foundation.

I'm digging the 'knights' idea quite a bit, yea.

I like the distinction between physical and arcane and the seperation in this order's structure a lot. Having multiple divisions of the knighthood would create interesting roles to fill and leave room for a variety of personalities for the party. Coping with this emotional and physical burden would definitely grow the whole cast. Maybe they might have to put one of their friends down since they have become too lost? This 'demonization' as you called it, sounds like a great term to use.

I'm excited! I'll start writing up a character outline very soon.
