Amber

April 16th 2136, that was the date. A day that will go down in the history books if Amber's mission is successful. She had been assigned to attempt to travel through time for the first time in human history. Well, at least the first time there was a good chance it would work. As she made her way down the clean white halls of headquarters, she reflected on what they had done to get here. Countless hours had been spent researching, theorizing, and building. Not to mention the amount of money that had been put into this project. She estimated that over seventy billion dollars had been invested into this project. And of course, the time with family that the scientists had sacrificed in order to get to this point. And now, it was time to see if it had all paid off.

There was of course the chance that it wouldn't work. Honestly, they had no idea what would happen. Amber had been told that either it would work and she would be sent through time, or she would not go anywhere, or she would disappear completely. She had also been told that it was a possibility that she would be completely erased from time, never being born. She had to admit, she was feeling a little uneasy, but she wasn't backing out. All her life, she had wanted to do something worth while with her life. When she was five, she wanted to be a doctor. When she was ten, she wanted to travel through space and help colonize other planets. When she was twenty, she was drafted into a program to train her and a few other cadets to be able to travel through time. She had graduated at the top of her class, so of course she was chosen to be the first to go on this mission. She had been training for this moment for six years, and she wasn't about to back out now. The scientists had her stand on a small platform as they explained everything once again.

"Okay, you're going to be going forward in time about a hundred years. We'll be keeping in constant contact with you throughout the entire mission, don't worry. If you for some reason need to come back in an emergency, the watch you're wearing has been equipped with the technology to bring you back. All set?" One of them asked her.

"As ready as I'll ever be." Amber replied.

He nodded and pushed a button, and that's when Amber blacked out.

----------

Amber groaned as she woke up, squinting at the harsh sunlight that assaulted her eyes. Why did she pass out? Was that supposed to happen? She let out a noise of discomfort as she felt her head pounding. Apparently, time travel causes headaches. She looked around her, and was slightly confused as she found herself in a forest. A forest? I thought all the forests had been cut down ages ago. . . There were no signs of technology, or people. What on earth was going on? That was what she realized that no one was talking to her. Had her communication relay been damaged?

"Hello?" She said hoping someone from headquarters would answer, but there was only silence on the other end. "Great. . ." she muttered with a sigh as she attempted to stand up, having to brace herself on a tree as dizziness came upon her.

Kain

"Inoth!" Blasted lizard, where has he gotten off to? Kain had just about had it with the hatchling dragon. He'd kept insisting that some magical traveler was going to arrive today. All morning, it was all he would talk about. Dragons were highly perceptive, sure, and had a strong knowledge of the arcane, sure, but Inoth was a baby--he didn't know how to interpret his Foresight...and now the little troublemaker had disappeared to who knew where, probably searching for this benign 'traveler'. "Inoth!" He called again. He'd tracked the small reptile as far as the forest, but he'd lost his trace after that. The dragon was too far away, and he couldn't feel the weak mental link he shared with him. "Damn." Presently, he heard movement, but it was too large to be the dragon. He scanned the area to his left, where he saw...well, he wasn't actually sure what it was. But, it looked like...a person? Wearing...very strange clothes... Kain gripped his spear and warily approached the figure. He soon discovered that the person was indeed just that, a woman, to be exact. "You! Stranger! These are the King's lands, and you are trespassing! What are you doing here? Speak quickly!" He demanded. He couldn't help but think though, she was very strange.

Amber flinched as she heard a voice suddenly speak to her, and it wasn't a very friendly voice either. She looked at who the voice belonged to and the first thing that caught her eye was a spear. Amber was still disoriented from the travel, and she couldn't think clearly. Should she run? She doubted she could outrun him in this state. Try to talk to him? "I-Um. . ." Something had obviously gone wrong. She was in the past, not the future! "I. . . I'm a bit lost. I didn't realize I was trespassing." She replied to him. Well, she wasn't lying.

Kain

"I'd say--" Kain cut himself off when he felt a twinge in the back of his head.
Help her!
Inoth? Kain was relieved to hear the little dragon's voice again, but what he'd said puzzled him. Perhaps he'd been right about there being an unexpected visitor. Technically, he'd have to bring her before the King to give an account of herself.
She really is confused. Inoth told him.
"..." Kain upended his spear and leaned on it while he considered his options. She was definitely confused, if not scared, whoever she was. After a moment, he picked up his lance once more and hung it over his shoulder.
"Let's go." He told her simply. Inoth, meet me at the barracks. You disobeyed me.
Yes, Kain... Came the sullen reply.
"In front of me. Walk. I'm bringing you in for questioning." Kain told the woman. Normally, he would just take her straight to the King, but if Inoth was right, this situation might have to be handled differently.

Good job, Amber. You've been here a total of ten minutes at the most and you've already managed to get yourself arrested. She scolded herself internally. On the bright side of things, he didn't look like he was going to kill her. However, now she had other problems. Obediently she started got in front of him and started walking. She couldn't tell him that she was from the future. If she did, it could cause irreparable damage to the time continuum and history could be changed, causing paradoxes upon paradoxes, and the eventual degrade of the entire universe.

Kain

So, he led her to the castle grounds, but he didn' take her to the castle. Instead, he had her enter the barracks, which he knew would be empty at this time of day. The barracks was very plain. It was a large building made to house city guards, all of whom were on patrol. It looked kind of like a thatched-roof barn, just without all the horse stalls, and instead had two rows of cots, one along each wall, with an identical dresser between each cot. At the end of the barracks was a wooden staircase that led up to a second level. It was up there that Kain led the strange woman. The second level was an average room size, and it had a bit more decor than the rest of the building, though not by much. Again, there was a cot and a dresser, but there was also a desk that had a few papers on it, some written in an identical flowy script that slanted the wrong way, which suggested a lefty wrote them.
"Sit down." Kain told her. He wanted to give her a chance to collect her thoughts. So, he took his time, leaning his lance against the wall behind him as he sat down at the desk, rifling through some of the papers that were sitting on it, putting some away, and reading through some others, just little things.
Presently, there was a chittering noise and the sound of wings, when a very small, purplish-blue dragon flitted up to the bedroom/office which served as Kain's residence and landed on the edge of the desk. Were one to look closely, one might see that the desk was very scratched up, possibly from strong little talons made by a young dragon, who continued to make throaty chittering noises and peered at Amber with great interest.

She sighed and sat down, thinking about what she could say. She didn't think he was stupid enough to fall for any lie she could come up with, but she couldn't tell him the truth. He'd never believe her anyway. Amber was startled out of her thoughts when she heard a scratching noise and looked over to see a strange creature she'd never even heard of before. "What is that???" She asked or of shock.

Kain

"That is a disobedient child that needs a good scolding, and is not why we are here." Kain told her pointedly. The reptile grumbled in disappointment and stopped fidgeting.
Kain took out another parchment and took up his quill in his left hand.
"Now. Your name, occupation, and your purpose for being here. If you lie, I will know. So do yourself a favor and tell the truth the first time."

Amber sighed and tried to focus on the task at hand. "My name is Amber Varges, I am a scientist, and my reason for being here is I got lost. I'm. . . Not exactly from around here. To be honest, I have absolutely no idea where I am." She replied, deciding to leave out the time travel bit. She may end up having to tell him eventually, but she was going to hold off for as long as she could.

Kain

There's something she's hiding. I sense that she thinks whatever it is will be dangerous if we know it. The young dragon told him.
Kain frowned as he wrote.
"Very well," he told her, "what are you not telling me?" He asked. If it was dangerous, all the more reason he should know. Though of course, Inoth wasn't always perfectly accurate, he was just a hatchling, after all.

She frowned deeply as she stared at the man, trying to determine whether or not she should risk it. If she didn't tell him, who knows what would happen. She could be killed, or imprisoned. Not that she would blame him. If she were in their position, she would probably do the same thing. Then again, if she did tell him, he might not believe her and she'd end up killed or imprisioned anyway, or he'd run off and tell everyone and end the world. There was, of course, the chance that neither of these things would happen. Amber hesitated for a moment before speaking. "If I tell you, you must not tell anyone else without my consent, for two reason. One, if you tell anyone else they'll probably consider me insane and I'll get locked up. Two, if the wrong people find out about this, it could cause the entire universe to implode."

Kain regarded her with a hidden expression.
She certainly believes what she's saying. Came the dragon's input.
Kain sighed, put down his quill, and leaned back in his chair.
"Very well. Speak." He replied.

Amber

Amber nodded, but still hesitated before beginning. "To put it bluntly, I'm from the future. At least, I assume this is the past. At any rate, if we're in the time period that I think we are, judging by the lack of technology, about six or seven hundred years in the future, I'm part of an experiment to test humanities first actual attempt at time travel. I was supposed to go into the future, but something went wrong and I ended up back in time. None of my technology works, and I'm stuck here." She explained. "I know you'll probably think I'm crazy, but that's the truth. If you tell anyone, it could change history and endless paradoxes would happen, and the universe would never have existed." She sincerely hoped he understood the gravity of the situation, and believed her.

She tells the truth, at least as she believes it. I told you a magical traveler would come today! The small dragon protested.
Kain waved him off before returning his attention to Amber.
"You're right, you do sound insane." He told her.
"So I think perhaps concealing your identity should be the top priority. Or you may never get back to your time."

A sigh of relief made its way out of Amber's mouth. Despite the fact that he had told her she sounded crazy, he believed her, and that meant that she had at least one person she could trust a little bit at the moment, and he seemed like he would help her. She nodded in response to what he said. "I think that's a good idea."

"You'll need a new identity in the meantime. You have a few options. I can hire you as a servant, you can find work in the castle, or you can find work elsewhere. The problem with that is you'll have to find your own place of residence. I or the castle can provide housing for you." He informed her. He regarded her for a moment.
"Also, you'll need more appropriate clothes. When you have settled in, then we can talk about your...travel arrangements."

"I'd like a job which requires as little interaction with people as possible. Which one of those options would be best for that?" She asked him. The less people she had to speak to, the less she had to come up with lies and ways to trick people or make them talk about something besides where she's from. "And yes, I figured the clothes would have to go."

Kain

Kain considered her query at some length, absently stroking his chin as he did so.
"You'll have the least trouble if I hire you myself. Your biggest worry is having to interact with people, and the people you'd be interacting most with would be fellow servants. I presently don't employ any servants, so you would be the only one. Though...I hesitate to have you work in the barracks. Soldiers don't often get to socialize, least of all with women. I can't guarantee that their behaivior towards you would be at all...restrained. No, I can't let you stay here, for their good as much as your own." He told her wryly.
"Though there is a space reserved for me here, I rarely sleep here. I have a room in the castle, where I usually only go to sleep at night, for I am here all day. I will employ you to keep it orderly, and will allow you to sleep there. Since I spend much of my time here, you shouldn't have many intrusions on your privacy. Is that agreeable?"

She nodded in response. "Also, would it be possible for me to have a small section of space somewhere that I can use as an office of sorts? I'm going to have to figure out how to repair this technology, and to do that I'm going to have to take it completely apart, so I just need somewhere I can lay everything out and look at it."

Kain

Kain nodded slowly.
"That can be arranged. The room isn't large, but it isn't overly furnished, either. I should be able to accomodate you with a workspace." He informed her. "Before you can go there, however, you'll have to look the part. I doubt I'll have anything small enough to fit you, but you'll have to make due until I acquire something more suitable for you to wear." He stood up then. "There's a trunk in the corner there you can search through." He informed her before making his way down to the main level.
"Inoth." He called.
The little dragon tittered something and launched off the edge of the desk to land on Kain's shoulder, though he was almost too big to be doing that any more.
