You wake up to a light shining in your eyes.

"Ah, good! Consciousness. Excellent." With a click the light is gone, leaving spots in your vision. While your surroundings come into focus, you hear the whirr and hiss of steampowered machinery, bubbling water, and the scribble of pen to paper. A coppery, burning smell fills the air.

You were sure you had died. Is this a hospital?

"Open up. Say 'Ah!'" A tongue depressor invades your mouth. "Very good. Move your fingers? And your toes. Full motor capability, good. Echo one one six, successful transmutation, body intact, subject is conscious and retains understanding of language."

Your vision clears. You're lying naked in a glass-and-metal pod, staring up at a stone ceiling crisscrossed by pipes and gears, dimly illuminated by dusty caged bulbs. There are bigger machines around you and more pods like yours -- some of them filled with unmoving bodies.

"Now then, hello! Please don't panic." The sprightly voice belongs to a small sandy-haired man wearing thick funny goggles with a dozen interchangeable lenses. "I'm Doctor Kelodie. You're quite safe and very much alive. What do you remember? Let's start with your name."

concept

The land of Roon is under attack by the enormous and powerful Monsters of Draconic Origin (MODO) which appear and disappear unexpectedly, leaving swaths of death and destruction in their wake. Conventional weapons and elemental technologies have no effect on the MODO, and the monsters' unannounced appearances render all evacuation efforts useless.

Out of desperation, researchers and mechanikers have turned to the ancient myths for help: the story of the origin of all things created out of Nothingness, the Dragon Ashig-Morool who hungered to devour the Nothingness, and the unnamed hero who returned to life from death, who drew upon the power of Nothingness itself to shatter Ashig-Morool into nine lesser monsters that were imprisoned and laid to sleep, scattered throughout Roon.

It had been just a story, until the MODO began to wake.

In theory, a person who is brought back from the dead will retain a connection with the Between: a plane of existence between life and death, where ghosts and daemons reside. Using this connection -- in theory -- this person could call those daemons into reality, to utilize their inherent magics and power to combat the MODO. In theory, this person might even trap and control the MODO themselves by the same methods.

By abandoning morality, the mechanikers have devised a way to return the dead to life. They are called Echoes, and they are the only hope of civilization.

character

You were dead. Now you're alive. Your body is flawless and new, but it is undoubtedly your own.

The mechanikers have no means of choosing which souls they bring back from the dead. The only restriction is the person must have died within the previous twenty years, and within a radius of one hundred miles of the laboratory.

Characters will have grown up in the Kingdom of Sink, in a time of clockwork technology and budding steam-powered machines. The kingdom is enormous: it encompasses several towns and numerous villages, each with its own history and flavor, as well as a vast mountain range, deep forests, a dead wasteland in the south and the coast along the sea.

Character histories may be based on any number of possible environments that could exist within the kingdom, but please note that anything and everything that you come up with outside the character itself -- including places, organizations and NPCs -- are forfeit to GM control and manipulation. As GM, I retain the right of full creative power over everything but your own character. Please keep this in mind before you create your own NPCs and towns.

Characters may be of any age, but must be human. Characters will start out with no possessions whatsoever. Characters who are disinterested in the storyline and are not inclined to participate in the storyline whatsoever are not prohibited from doing so, but You're Gonna Have a Bad Time. Please take note as you're developing your character's personality.

gameplay

Your character is an Echo: someone brought back from the dead, who can see into and interact with the Plane Between Life and Death (referred to as "Between"). This means your character can see ghosts and daemons. Ghosts are exactly what you'd imagine them to be. Daemons are strange and sometimes powerful creatures that can't interact with reality and are invisible to everyone but the Echoes. To your character, they are as alive as any other animal -- your character can see and touch and hear them, and they can see and touch and hear your character.

As an example, let's say your character is walking down the road in the company of another person who is not an Echo. Suddenly, a little beast with scales and fur and long teeth leaps out of the foliage and attacks your character. To your character, it is a fight to the death. To the person walking alongside, however, it looks like your character is swatting at nothing, and probably thinks your character is more than a little crazy.

At the beginning of gameplay, your character will be given a bag of pebbles: uneven little colored stones that are made of pure Nothing, the source of everything. By touching a weakened or willing daemon with a pebble, your character can bind that daemon into the pebble. With a little concentration, your character could then summon the daemon out of the pebble and into reality.

So, back to the road example. Your character captures the daemon into a pebble. Just as your friend starts to call your character crazy, your character summons the captured beast -- and now it exists in reality, and the friend can see and touch and hear the creature just as well as you can.

These summoned daemons are the only things that are capable of harming the MODO. It is possible to capture a MODO in the same way, if you'd rather not kill it -- but perhaps you'll need a bigger pebble.

Characters may want to travel to new areas to find different types of daemons, or daemons with greater power. They will have to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings, willing to follow clues and solve mysteries to piece together what's happening and why.

They will chase down the MODO and prevent them from further destruction, but the core of the story lies in the reason the MODO are waking in the first place. Something is Happening, and it's up to your characters to figure it out and decide what to do about it.

@RedXCross Excellent! Aster will be a wonderful addition to the mix. Approved!

There were a few minor questions in there, which are good ones: there is one king of Sink, and several dukes and duchesses in charge of their own duchies within the kingdom, and then each town and village within the duchy would have its own baron.

If anyone has some creative ideas on social classes I'd love to hear them. I figure, though, that there's enough weirdness to keep track of -- keeping most things simple would be beneficial, haha.

This still looks super neat, and I fully intend to join it, but my brain is having trouble coming up with a character concept other than my usual "smol weird girl." I'll get back to you once I've slept a bit. =P

I'll get something up by this weekend. I have a penchant for making boring losers, so guess what I'm doing? I'm making a boring loser! It's just a matter of getting brain words into computer words.

Putting this up so I don't lose it. Detailed bit coming Soon(tm)!

Name: Matthew Souza.

Age: 25.

Abstract: Angry Playboy and Former Militiaman

Detail: Matthew Souza is the very image of "exotic pretty boy". He has bronze, blemish-free skin, wavy black hair, and a dazzling smile that expertly hides the fact that he is actually incredibly nervous at almost any given time. He's rather muscular, in a lean, tough way, and has an easy, casual way of speaking that hardly ever leaves him, even when he's speaking to someone that is technically his superior.

Little Matt Souza was born in the slums of Sink, to an absent mother and a father who, try as he might, just couldn't get off the bottle. He grew up a small, unconfident, worried child, never walking so much as scurrying, as the other children often bullied him for the crime of looking different (bronze skin and black hair weren't exactly common traits). Whenever his father came home from work (at a factory that made weapons for the Sink army), he would invariably go straight to the little cabinet where the booze was kept, flop down at the table, and drink his sorrows away. Fortunately, Mr. Souza wasn't so much an angry drunk as a sad one; Matthew would often have to console his father when the man started sobbing about something, usually the wife he apparently drove away. How, he never said; only that she was "far better than I deserved."

At around this time, Matt went through puberty. And boy, did it serve him well; he went from someone most people wouldn't look once at, let alone twice, into a pretty boy of epic proportions. Suddenly, everybody loved him. He would often go to the richer parts of Sink to beg for money (Mr. Souza's job didn't pay particularly well), and found that he now earned much more money than before. He put his newfound beauty to good use, milking the "too good for these sinful slums" angle for all it was worth. In fact, he even got invited home by a few nobles for a donation of a more... risque nature, proposals which he gladly accepted (mostly).

But as he continued to beg in the city proper, and watched all the people go by who had so much wealth, and refused to share even a little with the poor boy on the street corner, he felt a little ball of anger form inside him. Why did these people have such riches, while he had barely anything? And for that matter, if they had so much, why did they share so little? Hell, some of them went out of their way to spite him, called him things like "mongrel" and "not worth it". One particularly charming gentleman had even had the nerve to call Matt "subhuman"! What did they do to deserve this? What had he done to deserve this?

Naturally, when a group of people who were sick and tired of the rich being so contacted him, Matthew wasted no time in joining them.

Initially, the SLF (Sink Liberation Front) were strictly nonviolent; protests, thievery, and suchlike. Matt had a wonderful time with it; all the adrenaline, coupled with the feeling that they were doing something right, made him feel like he truly belonged with the SLF. Of course, the amount of cute girls who were all too interested in him helped greatly.

But as the months wore on, and as the SLF grew ever larger, its leaders began to grow more daring and violent. They began to do things like firebomb the houses of the wealthy, cause a scene specifically so that the guard would be called in (and subsequently killed), or even try to assassinate certain people that they felt had a bit too much influence, or if they had something that one of the leaders especially wanted. In fact, things like the latter became increasingly commonplace; rich people turning up dead, their houses ransacked and servants - or even their family - indiscriminately slaughtered, all topped off with a note: "This house and its contents have been reclaimed for the people by the SLF." Truth be told, Matt was beginning to get cold feet about the whole thing. Even as the SLF's leaders broadcasted that they were getting ever closer to truly being able to "fix" Sink, Matt saw through the wool they had pulled over his eyes, and knew that they were no better than the nobles and millionaires they purportedly fought against, and in some ways were even worse. So one night, he gathered all of his belongings and snuck out of the SLF's main base, where all of its members were required to live.

He was caught, and executed. The SLF has no use for traitors.

@Mokley and, here it is!

~Hitomi Sora~
"Sometimes your imagination plays tricks on you. Sometimes it doesn't. Knowing the difference can save your life."

Name:
(First) Sora
(Last) Hitomi
Age: 18 Pre-mortem
Gender: male

Appearance: Doesn't matter. If you see me, it's too late.
He is 5'4" and weighs approximately 115 pounds. With pale blue eyes and Raven black hair, he will often wear a mask covering the rest of his face and neck. He has a tattoo on his left shoulder of a golden cross, and wears an earring of the same design in his right ear. In his left ear he wears a stud earring with a ruby gem on it. He has (now had) multiple scars, however the most interesting or important of which were burn scars that he had all across his back and torso, and a scar from a puncture wound on the back of his right thigh, close enough to the knee to be seen if he wears shorts. These scars are no longer on his body, but they were before his death, and they used to be a large part of himself and so he may act like he is still scarred.

Hobbies: Wandering about, observing others or spending time alone. If I am certain there is no one around I'll sing quietly to myself. I enjoy music, and nature. I also somewhat enjoy spending time with "friends". People tend to become predictable over time, I like to observe how their nature changes in any given situation.
Dislikes: Excessive questions or interest in myself by others, noisy animals (or loud noises in general), Snow in general, and crowds or crowded places.

Other Info: What else is there to say?
He doesn't speak much about himself, however to anyone who tries to ask it is obvious why. Sora values privacy, and identity. He finds it easier to go through life a mystery to others, so that others cannot define him in terms that they would a "normal person". Doing this, he's able to act in inhuman ways, justifying his actions to himself with this and showing little emotion in situations that would cause most others fear or remorse. Sora believes this detachment will help him to grow stronger, and it did for a time.

But then he died.

P.S.: He was an assassin before death, I'm not sure if I'll write in a bio for him later or not. just consider this the full CS and I'll re-post it if I do choose to add one.
