RECRUITING! Several spots open!

Hello and welcome to the Interest Check for ‘Rites of Passage’!

My name is Lupus and I will be your co-host for this tale along with my wonderful friend, Astarael42.

Now, Rites of Passage is an adventure conceived by Astarael42 quite some time ago and many episodes of the adventure have been played out on various RP forums around the web to great success. I was a part of one such adventure (the first RP I ever joined, back in '06, actually!) and so when Astarael42 finally decided to join me here on RPG I convinced him that it should be the first RP we GM together.
No knowledge of these previous tales is needed as this will be a new and separate story and though knowing a bit about Wizard of the Coast’s Forgotten Realms is helpful to understanding the world it is not required to join.

This adventure will be high-casual (we like character development and one or two paragraphs per post).

Here’s the set-up:

On the continent of Faerun, in the world of the Forgotten Realms, the Time of Troubles has just ended. The godly pantheons have stabilized, the divine beings are no longer forced to walk the earth as mortals, and their powers are once again being fueled by their worshipers on the mortal plane. Gods, both good and evil, seek to secure a place in the heavenly and abyssal hierarchies and for some the acquisition of devoted followers, through any means necessary, is the only way they will achieve the dominance and influence they crave. For though Faerun is enjoying a much needed time of peace, a sigh of relief after a terrifying time in history, the wars of the heavens and hells are eternal.

The battlefield has simply moved planes.

For you, however, all this is a fairy tale: a legend whispered by a parent, a guardian, a friend, or a stranger simply to make your heart tremble and your eyes light up in wonder. You are just a child of about 10 to 15 winters living in a small, isolated village between the Anauroch Desert and the Lonely Moor and far removed from the excitements of the world. It is a peaceful life, for better or for worse, and you have your own tasks and apprenticeships to attend to and your own mentor to guide you as you grow. It is just when you start to think life will stay as it is forever that Fate decides to deal you a new hand and a terrible event sets you on a journey you never expected: one of struggle and pain that, should you survive, will act as a forge over which your spirit will be tempered.

These are your Rites of Passage.

We hope you’ll join us on this perilous journey of childhood self-discovery and adventure!

I'm kind of interested in this. Can we base characters only on races/classes that are mentioned in the Forgotten Realms lore or can we use other elements of D&D too?

I was thinking in the line of a rogue/assisin like character but I've not yet really have an idea for a race. I always like to pick more uncommon races :D

Sure, rogue/assassiny character is no problem. Just keep in mind that these character will essentially start at lvl 0, developing their skills as the adventure progresses.

As for the races, that certainly depends. We might not be super keen on a crazy uncommon/'monster' race that stands out like a sore thumb (examples being Tieflings or minatours) in a land dominated primarily by racist humans, racist elves, racist dwarves, and everyone in between The starting village will be small and isolated so you'd need a good reason for why your particular character was there to begin with. Now, if you had a good reason or perhaps if the race was uncommon but still had a more 'normal' appearance (example being Moon Elves), we may be inclined to accept!

In summary, if you have a good pitch then go ahead and send us the character (or your idea) via PM or post it here and we'll tell you our thoughts!

I'm very interested in joining this. I'll try to have a character up by tomorrow. I usually run Home and Eberron campaigns, but I'm interested in learning some of Forgotten Realms.

Awesome! As soon as Astarael42 comes around I'll put up some more links to FR information in the intro post, for those who are interested.

I'm thinking of a divine class, not necessarily a Cleric, and maybe not a paladin. I don't know, I'll work it out. Would you be willing to accept a Kalashtar from the realm of dreams? :O Dal'Quor, I believe it's called.

I will discuss with Astarael and get back with confirmation but my first inclination is to say "No" on that race if only because it is Eberron specific... and actually quite Eberron unique.

Aw, all right. That's fine though, I can work with an Elf or a Human. I just find them kind of boring, you know? Very typical fantasy. Which isn't a problem, I just liked the Kalashtar for the race's tragic history. I'll work on something else <3

Heh, sorry about that. I do understand the wanting something a little more 'off the beaten path' we just have a lot of fear with allowing wildly unique races in this particular adventure. Plus, we have found that 'restricting' players in this way usually encourages a lot more creativity in the backstory and overall character design because people have to look for more intricate ways to make their characters stand out!

I look forward to reading your CS!

I'm working on a character right now. It will be a bit of a hybrid between Bard and Rogue. I'm making a kind of diplomat/spy character. Someone who uses her words and music to gather information and manipulate others. A character that can talk her way into the castle, steal the kings crown and have the lackey beheaded for it :)

Now I'm a bit in doubt about the class skills. You've mentioned that we can take 4 skills. Now I've run a bit into the following problem. My main idea is that my character will get things done by interacting with others. Now there is a very long list of class skills that more or less reflect the interaction part of my character to fill up my class skills. Bluff, diplomacy, gather information, sense motive. I was wondering if we could combine that into one skill of "Advanced social skills" as they more or less overlap eachother and involve interacting with other characters. That way I can actually be more then just someone who's really good at talking with others :)

Other skils I was thinking of are disguise, sleight of hand, move silently and I haven't even started talking about bardic music/knowledge, fighting and spells. I was thinking of dropping the spells entirely and giving "magical properties" to the music. Basicly use music to influence other people's emotions and attitudes. Also fightingskills are overrated :)

Question. Must I be a "Paladin of Honour" or am I allowed to take one of the other alignments? I may just end up going with the Paladin of Honour anyway. Im just exploring options.
