Five hundred years ago, in order to stop the threat to his authority, Darksied came to Earth and destroyed almost all of the life on the planet from orbit, killing anyone who stood against him. This created a nuclear winter and for the last five hundred years humans have been trying to rebuild.
Some people moved into caves, sewers, or other underground areas. They became known as "cavers". Some lucky people were able to move into space. Those that moved into asteroids or lived on stations or ships became known as "spacers". Those that lived on others planets or moons in the system were called "colonials". Some people, however, were unable to leave the planet or move underground, and had to try and live on the surface, which had become a wasteland. They lived off of the salvaged remains of the pre-waste world and the mutant life that sprung up in the wastes, and so are called "wasters" or "scavers". Each group tried to use superhuman chems, genetic engineering, cybernetics, technological devices, and other methods to allow them to survive, so most people have abilities beyond what their ancestors did 500 years ago.
Aliens rarely interact with humanity anymore, though, and there hasn't been a human green lantern since John Stewart died four hundred and sixty years ago. While there are descendents of aliens in the system, for the most part alien genes are fairly weak, including any Kryptonian or Tameranian genes that made it into the gene pool.
A new threat approaches the system, though. An alien race which robs people of their free will through some type of technology has come to enslave the human race and we, as some of the few people with any non-human DNA or some other unique trait which alters our brain's function, are the ones that are most resistant to the mind control, which was tailored to humans.
