STORY

Story Arc: Dawn of Fear, part I

One year ago, a torrent unleashed itself on the shores of Dun in the form of a vile and ruthless method that demanded the world to discard the aspects of tradition or face the price. At first, the attacks were whispered as merely bandit attacks designed to attack the superstitious and fearful in small towns all over the frontier of the Dunywood fields. At first there were no explanations given and many men scrambled to try to investigate this issue of men in white cloaks wielding unimaginative power committing genocide as they deemed fit. The acolytes of a former hero named Otis Malr were among such people that refused to allow more harm to come to their world; Kath Sentarous, Marlowe Bladeson, and Deya Talis. The three travelled with their mentor to the capital of the central providence, Dunric, hoping to plead to the Vann to investigate the matter seriously—as such wardens of peace had initially believed such massacres as the works of the outlawed and dismissed any such asinine rumors. That is until a group of men in white attacked Dunric and burned the Church of Infinity to the ground—their intent violently vocalized as they tore apart the Vann with little issue, then they disappeared as if they were never there in the first place.

The Overseer of Dunric elected a new roster of Vann to investigate the issue, but the appearance of this group that the population of Dunric called “The Order” became frequent and the Vann were reduced to relying on the population to fend for themselves; luckily, Otis Malr, stood as the beacon of light alongside the younger three as the violence surged. But this was only the beginning of the dark times for Dun. Despite the vicious attacks by these “orderlings”, Marlowe elected that they start seeking them out rather than waiting until they attacked and it was then they started traveling carefully trying to use what investigational skills they had to trace The Order back to whatever hole they were hiding in. On the first of these investigations is where they first met Mathis Rauzil (Rauzilos) and Alison Alfir (Alfiros) for the first time as they found themselves attacking a major trade village to cripple Dunric’s economy and create desperation back home. The three heroes were outmatched and found the situation rather bleak, though the enemy simply mocked their failings rather than killing them right there—disappearing once again.

Sub-Arc: Daughter of the Order

The turning point of year one began with the betrayal of one orderling’s daughter, Lexi Uael, who defected when the brutality that her own order was bringing made her decide that the choice she was following even if it was loyalty to her father—was not loyalty to her soul. Her father known as the powerful orderling, Uaelos, refused to allow such transgression and tasked himself with returning her to the cult for punishment—Rauzilos was tasked to aid him with this task. This put him at odds with Marlowe who convinced his friends that Lexi’s betrayal was not deceit. A battle ensued north of Dunric in a small forest where Uaelos and Rauzilos tracked down the young girl. Marlowe refused to return the girl to the Order and a battle ensued where at the end Rauzilos switched sides unexpectedly as the words of Marlowe and Lexi reached him.

Story Arc: Dawn of Fear, part II

In the second half of the year, the commander of The Order announced himself as he found himself ordered to retake the hold of Dunric as they were supposedly coming off schedule. Marlowe had discovered much knowledge from Mathis and Lexi in this time and in combination with training from Otis Malr found himself more capable. Gandilos then attacks Dunric and kills Otis Malr, completing his first objective and sending Kath Sentarous into a rage—emotionally compromised Kath almost nearly loses his life alongside his friend, Deya. This leaves the battle in a fierce fury between Gandilos on one side and Marlowe, Rauzilos, and Lexi on the other. Gandilos is defeated, but not before believing to have killed Marlowe. He tells the two former orderlings as he dies that “there is more to come, Dunric is only the beginning.”

Sub-Arc: The Edge

Recovering from the battle with Gandilos, Marlowe is told by Rauz of the origin of their technique—the control of spirit into powerful abilities and weapons—a land called Derim. Marlowe finds himself their intrigued by the story of weapons forged by one’s own spirit and decides to travel as Rauz suggests and arrives amongst a culture that finds him strange—despite this Marlowe in several months wins over the people and has an audience with their political body—the council of elders, who grant him the ability to travel to the Temple of Meras knowing full well that it is a death-wish for what he desires; it is here that he meets a girl named Viera, who initially serves as his guide. At the end of it, the two leave the island to go to Dunric—with Marlowe surviving the ordeal at the temple, he just hopes his four friends have held off the Order in his absence…

THE WORLD

MAP LINK

The World is currently in the Second Era which has lasted approximately four-thousand years. Kingdoms have
fallen, Technology has evolved, and Wars have been battled in this time. To say everything in the history of Sengia is a difficult task indeed, but perhaps summing it up in relevance is possible:

The Sentari Empire fell nearly two-thousand years ago when the last two heirs to it disappeared in the middle of a war with the Kingdom of Acreia in the east and the Rabari Empire in the west. In the time since this event the descendants of Sentar (notably the Sentarous, Sentarin, and Sentarih lines) have widdled and practically disappeared—making the guardian of the phoenix few in number and influence. The Kingdom of Acre and The Rabari Empire both could not hold the lands of Sapari and have pulled back to their homelands.

Twenty years ago the Landeian Dominion signed the Declaration of Cessation as they found themselves defeated by the Associated Peoples Alliance of Sengia after a lengthy one-hundred year old war finally ended. The pretense of this war was a religious conquest by the technological peoples of Landeia. Fortunately, their technology was easily reverse engineered and combated by sheer numbers as well as creative fighting (there were many rumors of magic being involved). The Landeian Dominion is forcibly dissolved and members of the war now govern their lands. These “colonies” are known as Idio, Soth, Weston, and Feye.

The College of Potestatis has fallen into disarray as information to find the college has fallen into obscurity—thus the teachings of cosmic/arcane magic has become little-in-number.

The belief of magic is rapidly becoming believed to be superstitious mythlore within the “modern” world, but many old world nations still believe in it despite the advancing world.

The technology of the world is reminiscent of modern day Earth in areas like Idio, Soth, Weston, Feye—whilst some countries like Rabari, Melshir, Aeria, and Fenris are trying to continuous adapt to the technology. But most other nations are very much the equivalent to the 1600s.

Races and sub-races are:

- Terivi – hailing from the northeastern hills and forests of Teriv lies the Zkreki, Dunri, Kitsuian, Acreian, Fenrian, Minaean, Darwinian, and Adsgarian peoples.

A lot of terivi peoples are based off central european cultures or latin cultures (Zkreki and Darwinian are based off slavic, Kitsuian is based off latin, Acreian, Dun, and Fenrian are based off ango-saxon, Adsgarian and Minaean are based off northern germanic and norse.)

- Sapari – hailing from the desert oasis’s of the territories of Sapari lies the Ataruian, Rakirian, Kiramian, and Aerian peoples.

A lot of sapari peoples are based off northern africa and arabic cultures (Ataruian is israeli, Rakirian is egyptian, Kiramian is persian, Aerian is arabian.)

- Rylosi – hailing from the southeastern riverlands and cliffs of Rylos lies the Rylothi, Ordosi, Cyrei, Lukasi, Srivaki, and Suvakian peoples.

A lot of Rylosi peoples are based off western european cultures (Rylothi is french, Ordosi is dutch and french, Cyrei is spanish and italian, Lukasi is french, Sruvaki-Suvakian peoples are french with some western germanic flare).

- Gavi – hailing from the northwestern jungles and mountains of Gavia lies the Kata, Lazeruzi, Uburi, Tankuri, Ehki, Ludosi, and Hongshi peoples.

A lot of Gavi peoples are based off west african and far asian cultures (Kata is japanese, Lazeruzi is african, Ehki is mayan, Uburi is african, Ludosi is chinese, Tankuri is mongolian, Hongshi is korean).

- Ari – hailing from the southwestern hills and fields of Ari lies the Rabari, Nabari, Dingahi, Khani, Salasi, Conri, and Dundari peoples.

A lot of Ari peoples are based off central asian or celtic/gaelic cultures, weird I know (Rabari/Nabari are welsh, Conri are gaelic/scottish, dingahi is cornish, Khani is hindu, Salasi is tibetian, Dundari is irish).

- Landei – hailing from the islands of Landeia lies the Landeian peoples.

The Landei people I never really figured out an identity outside of linking to sci-fi terrans.

MAGIC

Magic is the study of the mystical, spiritual, and paranormal aspects of life and whilst a science in definition, magical study is something that contemporary scientists who wield progressive modern viewpoints shelf as superstitious folklore. It is said that magical energies have been a natural part of the world since creation itself and any religion or culture will tell you their version of events as well as why it is so. However, through a non-religious and objective perspective it’s really difficult to pinpoint anything about the origin of magic other than it exists in many forms and has been vital to the history of the world. This can be separated into several categories, of which are listed below.

Celestial Magic

The realms of Daemos and Ancestros have been an unwanted involvement in the world since before the second era even began. This magic that interrupts the isolation of these celestial planes is one of the most dangerous and is the reason that curses, hexes, plague, possession, and many other sordid magics exist. However, not every single warlock or witch believes in meddling with the power of demons (dae) as demon’s have no purpose but to inhabit mortal souls for their own amusement despite powerful controlling seals that these dark magic users have in their arsenal. However, there is the other end of celestial magic within the embodiment of the counter plane of Daemos—Ancestros. Whilst the ancestros spirits were not aware of ones from daemos, they were the perfect weapon against them and saw the mortals of Sengia not as slaves but as people to help. This was why that blessings, bindings, divination, healing spells, and zealous magic in general came to exist.

It is to note there are two core “holy” orders who are connected with Ancestros—Hunters of Kael’van, and the Hand of Hy’perion. The only “unholy” order that exists outside of independent study is the religious body of the Uburi people called the Magi of Sujba.

Cosmic Energy

The word cosmic relates to the fantastical nature of the energy that Arcanus Potestatis discovered over three-thousand years ago. The truth of cosmic energy is that it’s an energy that binds the world as one, as a sort of primordial glue. This does not mean it is responsible for the pieces it is holding together (such as nature), however. Arcanus believed that this cosmic energy was the key to understanding everything which had to do with its existence everywhere on the planet and it’s malleability as it is the only magic that could be shaped to the user’s imagination. This shaping created the concept of arcane theory (named after Arcanus himself), and as such is an energy that can be used to emulate and create anything from weapons, elemental conjuration, fantastical alchemy, and much more.

The core of the knowledge of Arcanus once relied in the libraries of The College of Potestatis which has been muddled in obscurity in the last thousand years…

Elemental Magic

One of the first magics were the ones believed to be the personifications of nature and is one that is found in the bloodlines of six ancient men: Sentar, Svellhalr, Kataloni, Aerrheolwr, Kamensdvig, and Marée. Outside of Primitus each of these men found the ability to create and manipulate their chosen element in this order: Flame, Frost, Storm, Air, Earth, and Tides. There was also a seventh who created the Drudic Order who could only manipulate and control all of the elements. These people would come to be known as blood elementals and are still some of the most powerful and influential today— it is said that the emperor of Kataloni and all of his noble lords have the blood of the first storm elemental in their veins. Another ability attached to the six ancient bloodlines (but not the druidic, Primitus) is the ability to survive the death of their soul and body once in their lifetime. It is said when an elemental dies that nature changes for a moment to reflect the emotion of the element they are bound to.

Elemental mastery is rare but when it is achieved it can powerful magics of sound, metal, molten flame, true ice, plasma, and dark water.

Eternity Force

The danger of the Eternity Force lies in the oldest stories in the ruins of the first world. It is said that there were seven who first tapped into the Eternity Force and forced the rebirth of the world. The merits of the story is hard to translate and perceive—but what is known is that there are two runes that are siphons of Chaos and Harmony that were discovered by the Lazeruzi tribes and the Ehki civilization several millennia ago. The energy that existed acted through artifacts, totems, and trinkets of the old world found themselves inhabiting the two peoples as a whole but for why is unsure. In the time since chaos and harmonic artifacts are an enigma that hold a sort of radiative magic that grants people power at the expense of changing them. It is said that a person who does not wield the blood ties to Chaos and Harmony will find themselves manipulated by the Eternity Force and driven mad of sin (chaos) or bound by virtue (harmony). In fact… there are stories of gods who walk the earth who represent these very sins and virtues…

To explain it a bit more: the magic of the eternity force is seemingly magic in its rawest, most unstable form. Through an artifact it can be channeled into purple (chaos) or blue (harmony) energy to be used as projected energy blasts, barriers, and so forth.

Psionic Energy

The origin of psions are not exclusive to the Academy of Volontà de Mente in the Republic of Cyre as the magic of psionic energy is something that has so little understanding. One thing is certain: psionic energy is the power of will and mental fortitude. Psionic capability is variable as it has produced mediums who can see the “essence” of a person’s emotional spectrum, clairvoyants who can see variable futures through the “essence” of the world, and combatants who wield powers such as: object levitation, mental domination, combat psychokinesis, and telepathic communication to name a few.

Spiritual Energy

Known throughout the eastern world as “aura”, “mana” in the central deserts, “chakra” in the south-western world, and “ki” in the north-western world, the conception of spiritual magic is one of the oldest in history. Such magic is the manipulation of the spiritual energy that is contained within the human body that is produced. Once grasped correctly, it is then directed through the various channels to any of the gateways in the body and then can be controlled or manipulated to create various effects that would not be possible.

To explain it further: L (lifeforce) x V (vitality) = S (Spirit). You lifeforce is your soul’s centre, which combined with the health and fortitude of your body (vitality) creates spiritual energy that you can use to move through your body for a variety of purposes.

Such techniques produced by such spirit navigation is accumulated into several categories:

Sensory Arts – The use of your spiritual energy within the domain of the mind which achieves techniques that can enhance the mental attributes of the user such as perception and the senses. Rather challenging to learn, and very difficult to master.

Physical Arts – The use of your spiritual energy within the domain of the body, enhancing the physical attributes of the user such as strength and dexterity. This can give the illusion of super-strength/hard martial arts. Basic to learn, but can get particularly challenging to master.

Energy Arts – The use of your spiritual energy as a raw weapon, expelling it into attacks such as energy blasts. Moderately difficult to learn, challenging to master—also if done incorrectly can do massive damage to the body and the aura gateways within that body.

Transmutative Arts – The use of your spiritual energy to shift the purpose and construction of your aura for specific uses (medical aura, teleportation, etc.). Very dangerous as it changes the spiritual frequency of your body and can mess up the production of spirit to your body as one example. The most difficult to learn, the most challenging to master.

Extended Information on Spiritual Energy

Channels - The navigational passageways of the entire spiritual makeup of the body as a sort of circulatory system and the fundamentals for spirit manipulation into any of the basic techniques.
Gateways - The breathing points of the body where aura escapes or is confined. Naturally this is always open, but those who utilize spiritual techniques can close them and direct large amounts of energy to create the appearance of hard martial arts or alternatively keep them open and force energy out into shaped projected attacks.
Pylons - The spiritual nucleus's of the body nicknamed "the trinity of life", it is comprised of the mental pylon, the physical pylon, the soul pylon. The mental pylon mandates the body's natural perception, senses, and intelligence. The physical pylon mandates the body's fortitude, vitality, and strength. The soul pylon mandates the body's life-force, it's frequencies, and aura creation. Techniques dealing with unlocking, breaking, or changing these pylons may result in death. Manipulating aura/spirit/etc through these pylons is one thing but shifting the pylons themselves is another thing entirely.

INFO and RULES

Hey! This might be an anime-esque roleplay but that doesn’t mean you have room to do as you please and make this revolve around your character! The goal of this roleplay is to defeat the current assumed bad guy but that is a steady course not an instant objective and I want character depth, character development, and at the end-of-the-day—a cooperative personality of my players.

Now of course there are some limitations here, and I’m not going to list the “do not powerplay, godmod, blah blah” because you should know not to do these things for those who aren’t familiar with my definitions of the terms (the one’s I was taught a decade ago) is powerplaying is creating a character as a “power play”—one who has game-breaking abilities and skills that it makes the rest of the cast pathetic by comparison. Godmodding is the inherent hijacking of another person’s character and how they react. You aren’t Sally, Billy—so stop writing Sally’s character’s reactions to your character’s punches. Called hits are a big no-no unless you are somebody like the GM’s NPC’d villain (but even I will try to keep called hits to a minimum).

As for how many characters and side-plot control, that will be up to me and my staff; but due to the overwhelming interest let’s keep it to a minimum and establish stuff before then, yeah?

I would LIKE people to not imitate one another in power-sets, personally. But this is only related to elementals, cosmic mages, and celestial magic users. Spirit is universal and there are so many ways to build a character with it. I’ve had people who’ve used hard martial arts, barrier mastery, tapped into their own literal lifeforce to supercharge their aura reserves…. etc.

Remember that this is a roleplay where we are starting from a weaker point and getting stronger as time and plot warrants. Goku in episode one of Dragon Ball could never go against Frieza or Cell from the second series, so let’s not have ridiculous scaling issues. Plus if you are “the show” the rest of the characters wouldn’t matter, so don’t do that.

If you decide to fight stupid, you will likely get very badly hurt or die. The Order is a cult that employs aura masters that include a one-hit-kill sort of technique called “Kirhas” that you do NOT want to be hit by. Unless the plot warrants it, that might be it for that character.

APPLICATION

NAME – fairly basic
AGE – fairly basic
ALIGNMENT – hero or anti-hero, at this moment villains slots are GM-controlled.
APPEARANCE – please for the love of god give me words to describe this.
STYLE – elemental, cosmic mage, warlock/witch, aura user, weapon fighter?
TECHNIQUES – go into detail about what your techniques are of your style type.
CHARACTER BALANCING – what are the weaknesses of your skillset, how is this character not game-breaking, etc.
PERSONALITY – fairly basic, describe the mentality and emotional conscious of your character.
BACKSTORY – history, though likely this will have some GM consultation if it has any lore holes.
ORIGIN – so why is this character in Dun, or more specifically why the hell are they a person to go against the order?
OTHER – anything else you’d like to tell me or get into, think of it as character notes.

If anybody has a question about cultures/nations, I realize I don't have much up for them but I'm on a limited time schedule right now so I can answer anything needed for another like fifteen minutes.

Where might the Academy of Volonta de Mente be located? I realize that its not entirely important, but I'd like to know for possible backstory situations.

Thought I made that bit clear, Cyre.

They lost a very long war, had their country disbanded, their science congress disbanded and outlawed, their technology confiscated, their religion classified as bigots and banned, and now are ruled by the enemy-elected adminstrators. Pretty bad. Also, such thing was only twenty years ago or so.

There are two very rare, hyper-lethal techniques that I wouldn't consider playable in this category.

Uhm, you mentioned that there is an overwhelming interest for this rp (which I can fully understand) - does that mean that it is closed?
Or is there room enough for my interest as well?
