For anyone who missed it.

I've already expressed my reasons for why I don't plan on participating much here. My characters are ultimately too 'broken' to be used outside of my own setting (which is built around actually balancing them) and I don't feel like wasting my time listening to people call what I post 'god-moding' just because they don't understand that the concept of overpowered or 'broken' is entirely subjective to the setting.

'I work with characters on a very high tier due to the depth and complexity of my project. There's nothing wrong with choosing to do that, and it's not wrong for me to have no interest in taking part in the arena forums due to feeling like I need to water myself down too much.'

I don't think you had any intention on engaging with this sub-forum anyway, bud, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

@ImportantNobody, I definitely appreciate the response. I... Don't know if anyone 'ere is familiar with Roleplayer's Realm, but what you described is more or less what we had there. That is, in terms of a multiverse style system focused primarily on story-driven combat. And while I am eager to jump right back into the combat scene, I personally would fall more on the side of telling an overarching story whilst in the midst of battle. I still have a lot of my material from my time at Roleplayer's Realm, including designs for a couple of factions, their planets (which was what we fought over), and a number of specific events I helped create... I would love to help in any way I possibly can. The only thing I lack is the detailed power tiers we gauged each character by - which ultimately was determined by the writer's skill at... Well, writing.

Which leads me to @Shoryu Magami. I actually agree with you entirely. Every point made is valid... I am disappointed that you will not be a frequent sight - I would definitely be interested in working with you on something that could compliment your character(s). I may even have one that already does tucked away... Somewhere. Needless, just by what I can see here, I am very strongly reminded of the talent that surrounded me during my time at Roleplayer's Realm.

Regardless, I appreciate all the help 'ere. I think the next thing is to really try and jump right in and see if someone (anyone) would be willing to have a go at showing me the relative ropes of the Arena forum.

Thanks again and let me know if I can help with anything. I would be more than thrilled and happy to pour some creative energy into a new writing adventure.

@MelonHead
Right, because people being incapable of understanding a concept like how only match-ups are unbalanced and not characters, as opposed to people being unable to understand the complexity of my project, are the same exact thing. I wasn't even referring to my project in that statement about people not understanding. Why don't you try actually understanding my post before you start wasting my time with your ignorance? The fact that I'd have to dumb my ideas down severely to cater to lower tier battles is a separate point to the other statement about understanding, and your attempts at twisting a post that Glass clearly understood is laughable. You think quoting me makes you clever? I wouldn't post something up if I was afraid of being quoted.

I'd have been quite happy to help myself to the door, if you're the quality of the people in this place, but - unlike you - Glass was respectful enough to actually say something that made it worth my time to post in here once more. I wasn't even going to bother looking at your post, or even coming back in here, until they hit me with the [ @Mention ] feature -- I'd have ignored you doing that, since you've already shown me there's no point even humouring a word you say. I don't plan on looking at any follow-up post you give either for that matter.

@Glass
I appreciate you saying so, since I honestly believe this whole 'characters are broken, not the match-up' argument has been overused so much now it's painful. If people are too intimidated by a more complex battle-orientated role-play, they should get the hell over it and stick with their comfort zone. I don't recall ever trying to force anyone to role-play against my characters, did I? In fact that's the whole reason why I made a point I wouldn't be competing (that and I have a fiancΓ©, and a major story project, and half a dozen other things I can think of that're more important than role-playing).

I've been making a point right from the beginning that I didn't plan to take part in the arena battles, but I was happy to assist people with information and feedback. I've been offering support and guidance for a lot of people on this site since I joined up, despite not actually doing much IC at all. Stick around and support this forum after being disrespected though? Screw that. I've got too much dignity to let people on a stupid message board think they can talk down to me.

Nevertheless, I do hope this all goes well for you. I didn't mean to make your introduction to this thread be so hostile, but honestly it's my birthday and I don't feel like wasting my fucking birthday dealing with toxic people (not you, obviously).

Given how my current battle is proceeding slowly (or perhaps not at all) I could try a battle out with you. I can bring out a character to match one you'd like to use.

Also, it goes without saying but I don't feel like investing time fixing up a tutorial for this place anymore. You'd think with how slow activity is in this forum people would try to be a little bit more damn respectful, but if people want to see a forum die that easily then whatever. For whatever it's worth, I enjoyed the brief back and forth we had.

Glass isn't a member of this sub-forum, and has two posts on the forum in general, read into that what you will, but they have no reason to find your condescending and generalised remarks about the arena community insulting, or amusing, as I did.

Your decision to no longer 'invest your time fixing up a tutorial for 'this' place' anymore, does not bother me in the slightest. You seem to be under the misinterpretation that I represent the Arena in some way, as opposed to just playing in it. Though judging by your attitude to my ribbing, you really weren't cut out for the Arena, or any Arena I've experienced, so I probably just spared you the foreseeable anguish when people challenged you.

If you want people to respect you, try showing some next time buddy.

Whoah, hey now. Let's not get too feisty. I'm sure Shory didn't have any ill intent behind his words. Doubtless he knows that whilst most of us here are understanding, it's impossible to please everyone and sooner or later he'd come across a player that'd irk him.

Nonetheless, I can see how you'd find Shory's statement insulting, Melon. It's good that you fight to preserve the dignity of our abode, after all, somebody's gotta do it. Perhaps Shory meant it, or perhaps it was just a misunderstanding. Regardless, let's throw that shit into the wind and hug it out.

The guy literally said we'd be wasting his time because we don't understand what overpowered means. We, as in, everyone (unless he made poor word choice) in the arena sub-forum. He also made the wild assumption that he'd have to water himself down just to participate in the sub-forum (emphasising the generalisation, here), now, this can mean a lot of things, but whatever he's asserting is still a wild generalisation of the community as a whole, from someone who has no real basis on which to make these statements.

I think, considering he hasn't actually experienced much of this Arena unless he's an alt, he's simply been hounded out of other such communities for being a god-modder. His remarks certainly suggest that much. He seems oblivious to the concept of non-interactive powers, which are widely considered broken at all power levels, irregardless of setting.

In any case, I don't think any of us have lost out much if he chooses not to grace us with his presence or his characters. Seeing as how he was already on the way out before I gave him a kick. It's usually a bad idea to preface your knowledge dump with 'obviously I won't be spending much time here because I'd be wasting my time -blah blah-.' Because frankly, no one is obligated to give a shit about your feelings if you've made it clear we're not worth your time, nor do I generally take well to people who feel the need to speak to me in such a condescending manner. I don't bite so much anymore, but I'll happily respond to them in kind.

@ImportantNobody, I would like that... I'm sure I can stir something up from the depths of my creative reserves. I may go toward the lower end of strength in abilities, equipment, etc... If there is an example of a character along those lines floating around, I would be happy to take a peek! Otherwise, feel free to get something goin', and I will follow suit.

I do appreciate seeing the activity in this particular area. Gives me hope overall... And I'm a generally positive outlook type of person so, don't worry 'bout anything swaying me away. I'll stay or go based on my personal experiences/interactions.

Hey. Those are fighting words around these parts! I'll check out your battle after work. Should be an interesting one.

He's technically correct on this matter from a certain point of view. In my multiverse there are plenty of op people but are not op against each other. They are simply unfair to fight against for anyone who's not at their level. If someone has an attack that always hits, someone with an op dodging ability can counter him. My guy with infinite attack power can still be stopped by someone who's also op. Someone who stops time in my setting is countered and defeated. An immovable object and and unstoppable force are both op but can still fight on equal terms depending on what laws govern your setting.

I'll find a character of mine who is lower powered on another break. I'm at work right now.

That's because you wrote your setting. Your setting is completely irrelevant to the medium of arena roleplay, which is what this discussion is about, and what my point is centred on. Arena combat does not entail people crafting characters with hyper specific powers to combat every variety of opponent, its about compromise and working through disadvantages and out-thinking an opponent. Some abilities will always be inherently overpowered, broken in other words, for the medium of arena combat, especially in T1 Eden. If an ability completely shuts down all avenues of further action unless one happens to have an ability that directly prevents it, the ability is broken.

@ImportantNobody, that sounds like a plan. I've already started at least pulling something together (I'm at work as well). If you get inspired, go ahead and start a thread... I can jump in fairly immediately.

@MelonHead, I don't think gravity should be on that list. In that case you could say any type of magic, like advanced fire magic that spawns at your opponent's location at a glance. Time and teleportation is more inherently op, although any type of magic wouldn't be with certain restrctions. We're assuming a whole lot, but of course its much easier to generalize magic types rather than list all the possibilities.

I don't feel like using any of my current low level characters so will make a new one.

Like I said, most powers can be raised to the extreme at which it becomes non-interactive, and therefore broken. Most are expected to have a travel time for this reason, but gravity manipulation is usually direct, you change the force of gravity acting directly on a person, which can quickly allow you to kill them. The ability to generate fire on a person's location is also an example of an ability that is overpowered at any level. Sure, many higher tiers might not be overly bothered by fire but if they were they would die without being able to interact with it.

I'll be heading home in 40 minutes unless I'm too busy to leave, but doesn't seem like it today.

I'm guessing we aren't using guns? From my point of view I usually group gun users with medium magical power people. There's a long running debate about guns and where appropriate they are, but definitely not low powered range to me. Think I'll go with a staff or sword. Good classics to fall onto for low powered.
