Uwah, and there she went once more, with her super simple answers. Guess that, as far as elevating a conversation went, Sophia wasn’t particularly interested in it. Reciprocating her nod with his own, Brent flipped open the simple map once more and said, waving it around like a tour guide, β€œAlright, let’s go!”

With that declaration, he set a brisk pace, marching past all the other hospital staff that had worked themselves into a frenzy. His own stomach felt fairly empty, and he planned on working up a bit of a sweat to serve as extra appetite. Though Brent wasn’t completely certain where the fabled dining hall actually was, at the very least, it wasn’t inside the hospital. The amethyst-eyed youth practically jogged through the hallway, waltzing past nurses too preoccupied to watch where they were walking. The staircase was taken with long leaps, a couple grunts of pain bursting out during particularly bad landings.

Occasionally, he would look back and slow down to a regular pace, just enough for Sophia to catch up once more, but, well…if they couldn’t go to the gym, obviously, they’d just have to make do with what was around.

Slipping past the gap of the glass doors, Brent broke out of the Hospital and took a deep breath of the night air. He wrinkled his nose. Didn’t smell fresh and cool at all. Amethyst eyes flickering from reality back to drawing constantly, Brent hopped from one foot to the other as he ascertained his destination. Ultimately, though, the building that looked to be made exclusively of glass was fairly easy to spot.

β€œWell, then,” he said, turning back to his partner, β€œThe goal is the doors of that glass building over there. Wanna race? Yes? Ready set go!”

With that totally unfair setup, Brent sprinted with all his might, suppressing the pings and pangs spiking up his shoulder with adrenaline and a pointless competitive spirit. His bare feet smashed against the thankfully smooth pavement, while his left hand was fully occupied with keeping his hospital gown together. If there were more students around, perhaps he’d be labelled as a pervert, but USARILN was under attack and there was not a soul in sight that’d be bothered with someone wearing only a hospital gown.

Skidding to a stop by the double glass doors, Brent gave himself exactly three seconds to marvel at the glorious all-you-can-eat affair. He swallowed once, ran a hand through the sweaty mess that was his hair, and finally let out a long, long sigh.

His stomach rumbled like a V6 engine, before he marched in, full of purpose and appetite.

β€œID?” one of the lobby staff, labelled as β€˜Jason’, gestured.

Brent stopped midstep. β€œWhat.”

β€œID.”

A blank stare.

A tinge of annoyance coloured the man’s expression. β€œID. You need your student ID to get in. Comes with the package you get in your room?”

A genuinely beautiful smile formed on Brent's face, accentuated by his intense amethyst eyes. β€œβ€¦ah, yup, that package, right? Got you man, sorry, was so hungry that I forgot to grab that! Ahaha, thanks, Jason, I’ll be back super duper soon! ID, right?”

β€œ...yes. And maybe proper clothing?”

β€œYup! Copy that! Ahahahahaha…”

Still laughing, Brent walked backwards, rewinding out of the dining hall that was filled with a ridiculous amount of aromatic scents, back to the reality of an empty stomach and a new destination.

β€œWell, Sophia, turns out we gotta head back to our rooms, get a change of clothes and our IDs, before actually getting food. So yeah. Yup. Maybe you lead this time? We don’t have the same suites, probably, but we’re in the same Building and all.”

Ahahaha fuck.

Now his stomach was literally going to eat itself for another half hour.

A matter manipulator, a shadow walker, an injury store-er, a time rewind-er, and... well, Siena could really be anything, couldn't she? Stepping off of the truck, Cal didn't think she could feel any more pumped. The subnaturals that were already there were hard at work, but her attention rested more soundly on the various different monsters beyond them. Her grip on the loosely wrapped object in her hand tightened. She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, bouncing on the balls of her feet.

She was all ears for their instructions, though her eyes never left the blue X'd monsters once they had been marked.

"Anybody gotta power up or anything?" Cal asked eagerly, her eyes falling on a pale, white haired boy from green group. Less out of embarrassment and more out of courtesy, she wretched her eyes away as he crumpled onto the ground, howling with pain as his skin physically seemed to be crawling to accommodate the transformation she'd heard about in the announcements. How awful. She hoped nobody in her group had to endure anything similar, though really she was just anxious.

She turned to face the others. Her mind had finally made itself up from earlier-- her powers were a comfort and she was going to abuse the hell out of 'em. Especially since it seemed she was the only one among them who could roll with the hardest punches.

Lily stepped out of the truck, almost tripping as she stared wide eyed at the battlefield. Her gaze shifted from the glowing Ethan Sonnino to the dancer girl to the pig tailed girl then finally the tall African-American man. It didn't seem like they needed help by the way they were handling things. Or... well, if they weren't terribly outnumbered, that is. She looked towards the monstrosities just as the colorful marks appeared on top of each head...or what she assumed to be the heads. Her eyes zoomed in on those marked with the same color as her ankle cuff. She crinkled her nose. "Where does he get the ideas for these creatures? They're... ugly," she declared and then blinked. "Err...not that I expect monsters to be cute but... hey! Why does the green team get the yummy looking monsters and we get these creepy fish things and disturbing squirrel rats and...I don't even know what the others are. But... eww... okay, those meatballs have teeth." She turned her head towards the red team's monsters and made a sour face. "Dolls, hags and eyeballs...no, no. I think I'm just gonna focus on our own uglies." She looked towards Cal and shrugged. "Not me. I don't even know what I can contribute to this group aside form waiting and watching for one of you to get hurt." She followed her gaze towards the white haired boy in the other group, completely distracted by his transformation.

"Did I just hear someone mention 'meatballs with teeth'? Please tell me that's not an actual thing I just heard." Marcus said, hopping out of the back of the truck. He took one look over to where the green triangle was, and sighed. "Huh." Marcus said, an audible pause hanging in the air. "I'll be damned. Meatballs with teeth. How about that nonsense?" he said, crossing his arms in acceptance more than indignation. Of course it couldn't be something normal; nothing was normal anymore. The culinary creatures made about as much sense as anything else on the battlefield.

Speaking of creatures on the battlefield, he looked over to where a blue 'X' hovered, designating that group as theirs. "Those things look super gross, and one of them looks significantly larger than us. I volunteer to not fight that one!" he said, looking over the rest. Fishmen, rat-children, and a beetle-man. He contemplated whether he'd rather fight the pasta, and sighed again, this time very much in indignation.

Of to the side, over by one of the other trucks, a boy was screaming. Said boy was very much naked, and very much took Marcus by surprise. He was tempted to say something, but as deep as he reached, his mind could not come up with any witty commentary. It was just too easy; the scene itself was golden, and needed no input from him, other than a slightly slack-jawed look. In the same group, someone yelled something and pumped their fist in the air, and Marcus gladly pumped his fist back. They were teams, and it was good to see that they were all banding together; it offered a sense of warmth inside his chest, and he turned to Cal.

"I kinda figured we'd be getting weapons on the way over, so I'm woefully unprepared for this." he pondered for a moment, before bringing his hand to his mouth. "Do you think G.I Jackass over there with give me his pistol if I ask nicely? I mean, he's got an extra rifle and everything, and I'm sure an extra gunman on the field certainly can't hurt anything. I'll be right back!" he said, half jogging to where the soldier had positioned himself for the fight.

Callan nodded in agreement. It wasn't until that moment she noticed she was the only person currently in possession of a weapon. "It would probably be a good idea for you guys to go with him," she said, motioning to Lily, "Grant and I can't be everywhere at once." She nodded in Grant's direction-- confiding in him to help her keep an eye out for the less durable members of their group wasn't too brash of an assumption, was it? The range of his ability was something she hoped he'd capitalize on. For the team's benefit.

Siena stepped off the truck to a faint buzz of conversation, noting that they were in close proximity to the other teams, but quickly tuning the world out in favor of taking int he sight of the targets marked with a blue X. Pushing aside the frivolous thought of comparing their life-or-death situation to an MMO, Siena set her gaze onto each of the beasts in question, her mind already racing to try and complete a decent strategy. A cursory examination of the others told Siena that other than Callan (and she supposed Grant, given his abilities), most of them weren't in possession of a weapon. For Marcus and Lily, at the least, that would be problematic. Assuming that most of her group wasn't trained in combat put another tally in the "disadvantageous" side of the strategy, but that might have a chance to be worked around.

'The squirrels are fast. The big ones are probably more of a threat than the fish, but the fish could be poisonous. Better not touch them.' A pause as Siena crammed her hands into her pockets. Kindle and Overlord aside, she personally only had any experience with one type of weapon, and even then it wasn't actual combat practice. Gerwulf had simply been insistent that Siena learn basic self-defense. With a trench knife. It probably wouldn't do much good against anything more than the most basic of thugs with her natural ability, but if she paired it with a character, she could at least provide some support on the front lines. Lightly tracing the guard of the knife with the tips of her fingers, Siena continued her prolonged gaze over the battlefield, mind drafting and discarding plans faster than she could really keep up with.

'Better pick someone without superpowers...I don't want to waste time getting used to new physiology. Hopefully these things feel pain.'

Grant was just getting out of the back of the truck after most of his teammates had gotten out as he caught wind of his name. He turned his head to look over to... Callan, who nodded to him. Well, if he could help it, he was going to try to attack from a distance, but there WERE his team to worry about as well. He merely nodded in return. As if he had a choice in the matter. Once he finally stepped down from the truck, the chain from before rose from behind him, like before, swaying in wait as he brushed one of his many messy hairs away from his eyes. As Callan spoke to the others, he took in his surroundings. Was chaotic the right word? He wasn't too sure.

First thing he noticed was the blue X that hovered over the monsters. Blue. He guessed those were for his team. They looked... well... as creepy and deadly as he could ever imagine. Next thing he noticed was the boy screaming nearby, on the ground. Grant considered that less important than the monsters his team actually had to face.

Lily turned her attention back to Cal just in time to catch her instructions to her. She looked towards Marcus but was momentarily distracted by the squirrel-rat humanoid squeals. "That sound is gonna give me nightmares for weeks... not that I don't have any," she muttered and then refocused her attention and jogged after Marcus.

"Okay, cool, so...," she glanced at her remaining teammates before looking at their assigned monsters again, "It's 10 to 6. What's the gameplan?"

She looked expectantly to Siena, impatiently tapping her weapon against the back of her neck, "We've gotta move fast so we're ready to stall these things while the others get something to shoot with. Do you know whose name you want to borrow?"

'Eyes forward.' Siena glanced at Cal as soon as the older girl's voice broke through the white noise blanketing Siena's thoughts, eyes snapping to attention as her fingers tugged hard at the end of the hair she'd been absentmindedly fiddling with. She could hear some strands give away with a faint snap, but it was of little consequence. "I have an idea, but I'll need a moment to take the name. It's...It's going to attract their attention though." Cringing as she admitted the lack of subtlety to her magic, Siena looped the lock of hair around her pointer again, giving it a few quick pulls. "...and you guys probably won't like me very much while I'm borrowing the name. Don't...don't take it to heart."

"Alright, so we'll need keep them off of you until then," Cal offered a reassuring smile as she continued tapping her neck, slipping her free hand into her hoodie pocket. Once again, she looked to Grant, "I think I'd be more useful on the frontlines. I'll try to wreak enough havoc in there to make things easy for you, but could you and Padma watch Siena's back while she does her thing? Marcus and Lily will be back any second now to help out."

As Cal finished her sentence, she recognized that she had some how assumed the position of team leader. Was it because she seemed older than everyone else? More capable? Confident? Whatever it was, people were listening to her... and it felt good. Like she knew what she was doing and always had. Why stop now?

With a nod of her head, Siena flipped the cover of her kindle open with a deft movement, her fingers dancing across the screen even without the aid of her vision. Years of practice and countless rereadings of novels had left her without much fear of messing up. "I'll join you after I take the name." A sidelong glance at the list of bookmarks that she'd placed within her novel of choice. Under most circumstances, she would have gone for the most powerful characters in her arsenal, but without any knowledge of exactly how durable the monstrosities before them were, she'd have to play it safe. Middle-lower tier. Not superhuman, but far more capable than the average trained athlete. Taking her position behind two of her teammates, Siena finally sent her gaze downwards and let the magic begin to run its course.

"Alright, Ezio. Don't let me down..." Well, she supposed she should have been hoping that her body didn't give out mid-leap. With his name in sight, Siena took a deep breath, and let herself go. The sensation of her body becoming lighter was the first thing of note--yes, this one was always oddly pleasant, wasn't it? The thought emptied itself into the void as a circle formed around Siena's feet, wide and giving a faint purple glow before the steely color of the mage's eyes drained in favor of a deeper chestnut that bled across the iris. Pinpricks flit down her arm as Siena took the chance to pull Ezio's name from the work. Ezio Auditore da Firenze.

Soon, she wouldn't quite be herself again.

As a faceless pawn of a soldier, Jerry was aware that he was likely to be going through his paces whenever he had to deal with subnaturals. Most of them were brats--kids that were too young to join a standing army if not for the fact that they had superpowers. Jerry wouldn't deny that he was curious about what his motley little crew could do after their conversation on the truck (he had bets on one of the blondes kicking it), but that certainly didn't make him eager to be fighting alongside them. 'Damn punks will probably get me eaten alive out here.'

"Hey! Soldier dude! Focus, man!" Marcus said, snapping his fingers to get the man's attention. "So, I don't know how much listening you were doing back there, but I don't exactly have offensive powers, and I'd really like to do more than hide in the truck. So..." he punctuated this part with a child-like voice and fluttered his eyes innocently, "...any chance I can borrow that extra pistol you've got there? I promise I won't scratch it!"

The sound of fingers snapping brought Jerry's attention to one of the subnaturals that had been in the truck with him. Before he could growl his displeasure, something even more displeasing to the soldier was brought to his attention. This kid didn't have a weaponized power, and on top of that he evidently didn't have a weapon of his own. As if that alone wasn't bad enough, the blonde was asking for Lucie. Of course, most of the soldiers had the same sidearm, but Lucie was his pistol. "You're kidding." No, somehow the world wasn't going to be that nice and let the little shit be kidding about needing a weapon. "You know what? Don't answer that."

With a faint rip of velcro, Jerry drew the pistol from its holster, staring at the brat for a moment longer. These kids were going to be the death of him, he knew it. If not because these monsters killed him, then because he would try to murder one, which would probably result in someone else shooting him."Don't mess Lucie up. And don't shoot yourself in the foot with 'er. Or do." A moment of hesitation flared across Jerry's mind. Did he really want to hand one of his few defenses over to some kid that might not know how to fire the damn thing? Despite the gravity of the situation, a snide voice piped up in the back of his mind. It'd be fun if brat number one went and fucked up, right? Grudgingly, the soldier carefully held Lucie out for the subnatural with one hand, his other undoing the strap holding multiple magazines for his sidearm. "You got 15 rounds per mag, kid. Count your bullets."

'Oh man, this little shit's gonna be the first to go down.'

"Wow, really? As easy as that? No snide commentary back and forth? No begging? Man, you guys are getting soft!" Marcus said, rolling his eyes, and taking the gun from the man's hand. "I'll try not to put any dents in your precious 'Lucy'. Wouldn't want you sleeping alone tonight." He said, closing one eye and aiming down the sights. This would suffice; he very much doubted that he'd be able to take the man's rifle, so he'd have to deal with the little pistol...or 'Lucie' as it turned out.

"Extra ammo too, feeling mighty generous today, are we?" he added, taking the strap and wrapping around himself. "Just make sure you don't get in the way of the action, buddy. If I accidentally shoot you, Zhang might mark that down on my assessment sheet, and I don't need you as a black mark for the rest of my attendance here." he finished. If he had long hair, he'd totally do a catty hair flip in the man's direction before he walked away, but he didn't so he decided to leave one final remark instead, turning his attention to the battle. "It'd probably be super inconvenient if we had to hose you off the van later; be safe!"

"Yeah, yeah. Don't get full of yourself, brat." Not that it would benefit anyone to lose someone in the team while there were monsters significantly larger than humans rampaging. With a snort of derision, Jerry watched at the jokester leave.

Lily stood behind Marcus, rocking on the balls of her feet as she waited for him to finish borrowing a pistol from the soldier. Her heart beat pounded in her chest. In the truck on the way here, she had resigned herself to just staying out of the way while the more combat oriented students took care of the monsters. But seeing the battlefield and the monstrosities that were present, she felt that excited buzz, the disturbing thoughts and images in her head instantly disappearing. She had no idea how useful she can be in battle but there should be something that she could use to help without really coming in close range to the blue exed monsters. Her eyes fell on a belt equipped with hand grenades. "Ooh, those might work well for me." She gestured to the belt as soon as Marcus left with the pistol the soldier lent him.

The soldier looked at her from head to toe, an incredulous look on his face. He watched her point repeatedly to the explosive belt the way a kid would point to candies or toys she wanted. "You can't be serious, kid. Those aren't toys. Do you even know how to use them?"

Lily blinked and then nodded, returning the soldier's incredulous look with one of hers. She has never really handled bombs before but how hard can it be? "Take out the pin, throw it to the uglies and then BOOM!" She gestured grandly with her arms.

The soldier stared at Lily for the longest moment, trying to figure out what to do. True, these subnaturals were here as their back up and this small girl probably had some sort of power to fight off the monsters. But can she really handle the explosives? Won't she blow herself up? That would really suck. The Director would definitely have his head if that happened. "No."

Lily furrowed her brow. "What do you mean no? How will I help my team mates then? Grab some pompoms and cheer them on?"

The soldier rubber his forehead irritatedly. Yeah, that would probably be better than just handing over explosives to a girl that looked what? 14? "Don't you have those strange powers like the rest have?"

Lily narrowed her eyes. Here she was trying to find a way to make herself useful to the team and this buffoon of a soldier is refusing to cooperate. "Obviously I do. If I didn't I wouldn't be a student in USARILN East now, would I? But it's not combat related. So, I have to find away to help fight somehow... Why do I need to explain all this anyway? We're in a warzone!" She gestured towards the belt again. "Now, Hand. Over. The. Bombs!" she commanded impatiently. She glanced towards the battlefield and saw Cal rushing forward for battle. She turned back to the soldier, her finger pointing urgently to her team. "They're starting without me. HAND. THEM. OVER. NOW." She was getting exasperated.

The soldier looked just as exasperated as Lily was. He reached for the belt and handed it over. "You better make sure you don't---Hey!" Once the belt was within her reach, Lily snatched it and ran back to her team, leaving the soldier sputtering angrily about how his head would be on the chopping block. "Thanks, G.I. Jackass!" she called out, giving him a small wave.

"What the hell did you call me?" He shouted back at her.

With the monsters fast approaching, Cal quickly tore the fabric from her weapon, sliding a dingy looking katana out of it's scabbard and tossing it aside in the process. Clearly the weapon had seen better days but, more importantly, the marble-textured blue hilt and a small design near where the blade met the collar seemed to suggest it was more for display. Better than nothing, though... right?

"Time's up, guys!" she shouted, zeroing in on the biggest of the monsters as it charged behind the armored man with the deformed face, "I'll try to take out that big thing! Give me a holler if you need help!"

The closer they came, the sharper everything seemed. Her heart beat wildly, her breathe shuddered as it reached longingly out of her throat, and she spun the hilt in her palm once, more aware of the little silver ornament's texture than she had been in the store when she found it. Yes. Yes, this was going to work. Was that glitter? She deliberately chose not to focus on the stuff as it rained down upon her-- seemed harmless enough. She charged forward before she could notice the nicks appearing in her sweatshirt.

Much like the the track, the ground exploded at her feet as she leapt over the twitchy squirrel creatures and armored man, holding the sword much like a baseball bat as she twisted her body with elbows raised high. Unintentionally, her following breath became something of a war cry as she swung the blade across the bird-head's face. This was gonna work. This was gonna work!

After standing there, processing the monsters that were quickly beginning to approach toward them, he merely took a step before Callan hightailed it away and toward the group of monsters. For a moment, that shocked him, until that shock died down into a thought. How reckless is this girl going to be?! Of course, that was immediately answered for him once he heard what her 'plan' was. He shook his head with a sigh before readying his chain, which lowered down to the ground to the side of him, hovering just above it.

"Hopefully her strength's going to pull her through what she's going to do..." He'd mutter under his breath at the moment he saw her jump up, as if out from some kind of super hero movie. It distracted him for but a moment until his eyes focused more toward the giant armored man. Only thing about this giant man is that his face, no, its entire head was horrifyingly disfigured and warped. With Grant's focus now on the giant man, his chain came in contact with the ground, and he used the chain to literally pull a chunk from the ground below him. If anyone were to be paying attention to the chunk of earth that was literally ripped from the ground at the moment, what came out would've measured to about 2.5mx2.5m. But, at that moment, he felt as if intense weight had just been dropped right onto his shoulders. As if he were carrying that chunk of the earth on his own back. His footing faltered for a moment, but he managed to reel back his chain before letting loose, flinging the chunk of earth on course toward the giant man's head, the only obvious spot Grant could hit and ever hope to deal damage to.

The moment the chunk was released, that weight over his body vanished, yet the fatigue of just feeling that stayed. Lingered. He let out a breath he had no idea that he was holding, trying to catch his breath. Padma placed her hands on his shoulders, ready to steady him if he got too lightheaded. Feeling Padma's hands on his shoulders, it made it easier for him to regain his bearings with her steadying him.

"Thanks, I'm alright now." Grant would say after he caught his breath, fixing his feet from their disoriented state. She gave him a reassuring smile and a pat on the back in return.

"Remember to pace yourself," she advised, "The battle has only just begun."

"Of course it's just begun..." he'd groan out with an annoyed sigh before turning his head back to the giant man to see if his rock made contact, his chain close to the ground, ready for another chunk of earth. Padma merely shrugged at his response, keeping an eye out for incoming attacks.

Overwhelming calm. Compared to the usual chaos that threatened to drown Siena's rational thought, Ezio had a sense of devotion and calm. It was a nice change of pace, being able to think without having to scream her thoughts over the din. Deep breath. Hold, two, th--something glimmered in the corner of her eye. Almost mechanically, the girl tried to follow the movement, only for the squirrels to respond to the glitter first. A sense of danger settled over her, but before it could register, Siena was already moving to cover her face. If monsters were in pain, then that was a sign that she, as a human, wasn't likely to appreciate the dust either. A stinging sensation spattered across her fingers and what skin was exposed, but not enough to force the brunette into more defensive positions. After the faint discomfort passed, Siena dropped her hands, shoving her Kindle back into its proper place in one less-than-graceful motion before grabbing for her lone weapon with the other.

"Gonna try and get behind the squirrels. Please don't throw things at me." With only a few minutes on the clock, Siena wouldn't have much choice but to retreat for cover again to borrow another name--assuming she had the strength to do it after a skirmish against one of those ugly things. If Ezio's name left her mid-combat, there was little chance of her minimal "training" doing much good too. Keeping the thought in mind, the girl paused to survey the field, choosing a path away from where Grant had thrown the rock--best to keep out of the line of fire. Unsheathing her trench knife, Siena began to move, picking her way towards less visible areas in a safer, if less direct route, towards the monsters.

"Alright," Marcus said, his new pistol at his side. "You take out big boy over there, we'll try and keep the little ones off of you!" he looked to everyone else around him, and nodded. By the time he looked back, Cal had already bounded across the battlefield and begun combat. They, unfortunately, were left with the freaky looking rats. Fortunately, Marcus had a little bit of training with a firearm. As a matter of fact, the pistol he held was remarkably similar to the one he'd been taught with.

Alright, hold the gun like this. Nono; put this hand here, and that hand there. Now, look down the sight, close one eye. Focus on the little notch there, point it directly at your target. Relax your arms a little; don't lock up or you're gonna hurt yourself. Now, slowly pull the trigger until you hear it click. Try not to anticipate it, or you'll throw yourself off. Breathe in. Relax. Squeeze. See; not too hard, Marc!

Marcus stood, arms relax, gun straight out in front of him. Breathe. He pointed his sights down at the front squirrel-thing. Relax. They were coming closer now, speeding along straight towards them. He altered his aim slightly to allow for a lead. Squeeze.

There was a loud squealing noise, and pinpricks erupted across Marcus's hand. "Ah! Shit! What the..?" he said, looking around. Glitter; little bits of glitter floating on the wind, which was apparently razor sharp. "Watch the glitter! Shit stings!" he shouted to the rest of the team, whirling back around to face the squirrels. He'd gotten distracted, and now they were closer; he couldn't get sloppy with his next shot.

His finger squeezed the trigger, and the clap of gunfire accompanied by the smell of powder rang out. The recoil surprised him, and the gun nearly wrenched itself from his hands in his shock. He quickly regained his composure though, and took one more quick shot at the front squirrel, before lowering his gun and backing clumsily toward the transport.

Find a target, aim, pull the pin out and throw. Geez, I don't even know how accurate I can throw. She vaguely remembered playing darts. Laughter rang in her head, the feathered dart leaving her hand. But the memory ended there. Did she actually hit the board? She shook her head. No real use making sense of it now. She watched as the squirrel things came closer, her hand reaching for the first grenade. But before she can do anything, the glitters floating around caught her attention. "Oh, pretty. Are we celebrating now?" She held out a hand to catch some. It stung her before she heard Marcus' warning. "Too late," she muttered to herself, sidestepping some of the falling glitters. She heard Marcus discharge his pistol and it brought her attention back to the monsters at hand. She scrambled to organize her thoughts. What was his name again? Oh, right, right, Marcus.

"Marcus, take cover!" she called out. And then pretending to be some sort of pro, she zeroed in on her target, pulled the pin out and took aim. She pulled her arm back and threw the grenade.

During the time he had spoken, the brown-haired boy had underestimated the speed of the meatballs. In fact, while thinking over a strategy and orders to give as he spoke, he had forgotten one important rule of not wiping a raid: Don't forget to keep track of where the enemy is. An important part of strategy to be sure, as ignoring the enemy could have...dire consequences. With that in mind, as the heavy, marinara-coated meatball with teeth crashed into him and rolled over him like some kind of road roller or demented food-based version of Sonic the Hedgehog.

"Shiiiiiit!" Aaron cried aloud in vivid surprise as the meatball initially hit him, sending him to the ground rapidly and causing the loud and rather audible sound of one of his bones to be heard, specifically his right pinky finger.

As he attempted to recover from being understandably dazed for a moment from his harrowing experience, as well as glancing over to see his right pinky finger very much broken, Aaron felt something begin to wrap itself around him. Looking down as his mental clarity began to return, he found a long, well-cooked looking noodle wrapped around his torso. The now marinara-coated (at least on the entire back half of his body) sixteen year old instantly panicked, the pain of his broken finger not have set in yet from the adrenaline coursing through his system, adrenaline that had increased now that he realized that he was going to be snatched up by one of the flying spaghetti monsters.

Going with what seemed to be his first instinct, Aaron reacted as swiftly as he could, leaning up and taking a solid, large bite out of the tendrils of spaghetti that was holding him. Though desperate, the bite shocked him in that it tasted...amazing. It was the best spaghetti he had ever had, and along with the flavor of the best cooked pasts he had ever had the chance to eat there was the flavor of the creamiest, tastiest parmesan sauce he could imagine. It was like going to his favorite restaurant, Olive Garden, and eating the best food they had ever served. Except, unlike going to Olive Garden with his mother back home, the food was probably going to try to eat him if he didn't snap out of things.

As Zoe ran up to him and began to break down a small part of the spaghetti arm that was grasping him, Aaron leaned his head down and began to take as many bites of the spaghetti arm that was holding him as he could within reason. If he were freed, he would then bolt for the cover of the others as quickly as he could, dodging the spaghetti tendrils as best as he could in the process in order to get to safe cover to begin his summoning again.

If his eating and Zoe's power, the boy being grateful for the fact she had not listened to him in this case, could weaken this flying spaghetti monster's arm enough to free them. In that case Aaron knew he could bolt for the cover of the truck and other people who had not been standing as close to this. He would have to start over in summoning at least one of his clockworks then, and it was not like the fact was lost on the gamer in the process. Still, running to cover and trying to actually help the others was not a bad idea....unless one of those meatballs chased him there. Then again, the thought of how tasty the meatballs could be as well did cross his mind. However, as he continued his efforts in eating away at his captor's tasty tendril of tastiness, he kept his focus as a whole where it needed to be this time: on the situation he was in as well as on the enemies surrounding him and the others. Changing the strategy could come later, if anyone would still listen to him at that point, much less if they got the chance to do so on top of that...

Allison Revel

Allison started to panic as Aaron fell to the ground with a thud. She immediately rushed toward the boy as one of the meatballs rolled over him and towards Chris. As Allison reached him, a noodle wrapped around him. Things were going south fast.

Allison had no idea what to do. Someone else would likely come and do something useful, but Allison still needed to act. There was no use in standing around like an idiot. She looked down at her hand, shaking slightly, then back down at the boy struggling to escape from the noodle's grasp. Allison knew that her actions would be pointless, but she might as well try. She willed the shard to form in her hand. She quickly stopped it.

Zoe rushed towards the noodley tentacle, grasping the thing and using her powers. Allison wasn't needed right now. She would've just wasted the shard, anyway. They didn't have the time to wait for it to recharge. Allison looked down at her empty hand. What was she doing? She said she was going to try and lead, and here she was standing around like an idiot. She needed to stop fumbling around and start doing things. She looked down at Aaron, who was busy gnawing at the noodle, while Zoe's power rotted the thing. She knelt down to Aaron's level, checking him for visible wounds. His right pinkie looked broken.

"Anything else broken?" She quickly glanced over her shoulder to the angry child, Savannah. "Hun, mind dealing with the murderous meat product attacking the naked lizard boy? I'll try to help as much as I can when I'm done over here." What she was doing exactly, she didn't know. And when did she start calling people "hun" again? She hadn't done that since...

Allison quickly moved over to the unconscious Alexis, keeping an ear on everyone else as she checked the girl for broken bones. She felt kind of guilty for gently prodding at the girl's body. Well, at least she was making sure Alexis wasn't going to die.

Lawrence B. Ellison

On a goddamn clusterfuck of a battlefield. Population: Lawrence, Hazel, Sander, Chistmas, Kusari and Emma. Also Blue Team, Green Team, Pink Team, a random assortment of monsters, some trucks and useless muggle guards.
@January

Tch.

Lawrence couldn't exactly move out of the way of the doll's attack with Christmas right behind him. Not that he was particularly eager to throw his life away for a stranger, but keeping the boy behind him alive was his biggest priority. Bracing himself, and hoping the impact didn't kill him before Christmas could heal his wounds, Lawrence held the shotgun out in front of him defensively, feeling a rare adrenaline spike as he did so.

...

...

The impact never came. His eyes, closed briefly in anticipation of being smashed to pieces, opened to see Hazel moving in to his defense. She had said that her number one priority was to protect him, but plenty of nutjobs said plenty of things they didn't mean. He didn't actually expect her to be serious. His suspicions that his roommate wasn't quite normal were confirmed a little bit more every time they interacted. Still, this wasn't the time to be thinking about that.

It was only after Hazel, thankfully, intercepted the oncoming attack that he let the full effect of that glitter bomb from earlier sink in, and the stinging on his hands and face began to register. The pain was noticeable, but hardly severe or widespread. His jacket had stopped most of the damage. He tried to disregard the attack and focus on the battle once more, but paused at the sight of his bleeding hand as it loaded another shell into his gun.

Blood.

"Shit!"

A quick glance behind him confirmed that, yes, the attack did much worse harm to people with thinner clothing. The wounds still looked superficial to him, but the sight of Christmas bleeding was a problem. His blood was kind of fucking important to the group. As such, Lawrence wasted no time in slipping off his jacket, digging the box of shells out of the pocket as he did so, and barking an order to the boy behind him:

"Put that on!"

Lawrence savored the feeling of not being shredded to ribbons while it lasted, and dropped to one knee. There wasn't much more he could do defensively, he had to at least try to attack. The sight of the witch's sphere sucking in the surrounding glitter stuck in his mind more than anything else. A sphere that she still held out, in plain sight on top of the Eyepion. He didn't know if it had any other uses, but at least if he managed to get rid of it then it might halt another glitter attack for fear of friendly fire. If he managed to miss it, he might at least hit the hag instead. His mind made up, not deterred by the sight of Sander charging in from the corner of his eye, Lawrence took aim and let the explosion of sound overwhelm him once more as he pulled the trigger.

Everything went to hell the second a meatball rolled onto Aaron's chest. Savannah heard the sickening crack of bone, and then saw the spaghetti tentacle thing wrap itself around his chest. As it was her job to guard him, she tried to run towards him, but then almost ran into Zoe. Mentally cursing herself, she backed off, instead standing in front of Alexis while Zoe worked her magic.

"Hun, mind dealing with the murderous meat product attacking the naked lizard boy? I'll try to help out as much as I can when I'm done over here." said the black-haired girl who was currently tending to Aaron. Hun? Savannah gave Allison a glare before running off to guard Chris.

Before even doing anything, Savannah plugged her ears with her fingers. The screaming of the girl in front of her was deafening, and it made her head pound. After a couple seconds of plugging her ears, she reluctantly pulled them out. She needn't forget, her hands transmitted the magic that she had been given. The magic that had disrupted her whole life.

Sophia Lemane
She didn't have to wait long before Brent began to lead the way, and at a pretty fast pace too. She followed after him taking long strides, but at the pace that he was going she was forced to take a few quicker steps once in a while to keep herself from falling more than a few steps behind. She was beginning to get the impression that the older boy was quite an active person, especially as he leapt up the stairs. She herself normally took stairs two at a time and she still did so in this occasion, but she couldn't help thinking that Brent should be more careful of his injury.

At last, they were out of the hospital building and outside. She first glanced up at the dark sky, then around her at the lit up buildings as she turned slowly in a circle to take everything in. As she finished looking around her, Brent spoke up.

β€œWell, then. The goal is the doors of that glass building over there. Wanna race? Yes? Ready set go!”

She turned to face the direction that the glass building was in as Brent pointed it out, but wasn't ready for him to suggest racing there. However, she didn't have the time to contemplate what answer to give him, for he answered his own question for her and took off. Wait, what?

By the time she started off he had already had a lead by a few seconds. Cradling her arm to keep it from bumping around too much, she ran as well. She wasn't a bad runner, but she was definitely slower than Brent. At the moment though, it didn't matter much. It felt good to run after being cooped up in a truck for hours and then lying in a bed for hours, for how long exactly she didn't know. She found herself grinning as she ran before slowing down as she arrived at the entrance.

She had seen Brent already enter the building while she was running to catch up, but didn't mind much this time. Pulling the door open, she walked in and spotted Brent, making her way to where he was standing with a staff member. The place smelled... good wasn't a good enough word. It smelled heavenly. Almost there, she thought. Unfortunately, the smile on her face didn't last long as she came close enough to hear the last part of the conversation between the two. They needed a student ID to get in, and it was apparently in their rooms. The man recommended changing too. Can't they just let us in for now? I'm hungry! We haven't had a chance to go to our rooms yet, surely just this once? But that was wishful thinking, and wishes weren't reality.

Brent seemed to be laughing it off, but she didn't do things like that. Her expression was blank as she took out her own rather crumpled copy of the map to show that she would lead the way as requested. Right. So it's building A and I'm in Suite 226. Let's first get out of this building.

She pushed the door that they were standing by open and exited back out into the night. Then she rotated the map so that the dining hall, building D, was nearest to her. So if this is building D, then building A should be... over there.

She started towards what should be building A and set a brisk pace, though it was slower than the pace that Brent had set before. No racing this time. Upon reaching the doors that led inside, she made sure that Brent was by her before entering. Though she hadn't said anything more to him yet, she was too aware of his presence and of her thought that he was probably observing and judging her every motion.

Now that she was inside, she was about to find a staircase or elevator before she realized that she didn't know what floor Brent's suite was on. Turning around to face him, she asked, "What's your, uh, suite number?"

Cecilia's simple, transparent platforms held aloft ten Animi bundled up in thick jackets to combat the stinging cold of a harsh December night. Chicago's famous Millennium Park stretched out below them in the bright moonlight of a clear night, the trees lining the park bedecked in the yearly Christmas lights that twinkled like terrestrial stars from where the group perched. Everything was made just a bit brighter by the layers of snow blanketing the city.

Had they arrived under different circumstances, Nico would have loved the monochrome of color that the sheet of white cast over the bustling metropolis.

He gazed at the stretched reflections of light on the iconic Cloud Gate sculpture, a beautifully metallic (and massive) work of art that Nico had always called "the shiny kidney bean." This could be the last time he'd ever see it in all its glory.

"It's not too late to find another way," Donovan muttered beside him, breath condensing into white wisps.

"There is no other way," Nico's measured response was automatic now--calm now. They had argued over this for too long.

"We could get help--tell someone--"

"They'll drag us off to their special prisons long before they ever believe us."

"Fuck, man. We haven't even tried--"

"They've killed our type for less."

"Nico," Donovan gripped his friend's shoulder with a firm hand, "There's no going back once we do this."

"Then we'll do it right. No holding back."

Nico gasped again, clutching at the throbbing mark across his neck, another grating pulse thrumming against and through his entire body. The rest of the group reacted similarly, wincing and grunting in varying degrees.

The pulses had been brief and almost undetectable before, but now they almost knocked the wind out of him. He knew the feeling. Soon, even breathing would be difficult.

And that would be the time to strike.

The entire group had misgivings about the strategy, Nico included, but the final argument that had won out in the end was the potential for their actions to maybe fix a little of what was going wrong in the world. They way they had been living until now wasn't sustainable--not with the world now slowly mobilizing against mages who weren't locked up in USARILNs. It was now a matter of doing what they could before they were killed or captured. Because only they could do this.

Now they stood on the precipice of disaster, regardless of success or failure.

Nico pulled out a tiny notepad from his pocket, the pages filled with hopes and dreams, memories and wishes. The first few pages were little memories of his brothers, scattering across the timeline of his life in no particular order.

10th birthday: Elliot bought a giant carrot cake that we couldn't finish. Mom and Dad had to bring the extra to work so it wouldn't go to waste.

That day Lucien and Elliot yelled at each other so long they both had sore throats. Something about Elliot hiding all of Lucien's pens. But this was because Lucien kept tripping him the week before.

Elliot's used us all as pillows more often than I can remember. He always complained that Donovan and Whisper were shitty pillows.

Lucien's really bad fever one time. He wouldn't let us into his room because he was afraid we'd catch it, so Don and Whisper broke the door down. We really pissed him off.

Elliot really liked the giant friendship bracelet I made for him. He kept calling it the GFB whenever I told him to just say "scarf."

Further bits and pieces of life before the Primordial filled up several dozen more pages. Beyond that, the thoughts finally veered into fragments that weren't fixated on the dead. Something like moving on, he supposed. There was only so long he could grieve when there was nothing left of Elliot and Lucien after the disaster. Nothing to keep gouging open the wounds of losing them. So time and distance had scabbed over the injuries.

But Nico hadn't considered moving forward until a month ago. He had been content to keep running away with the vague hope that maybe the world would just fix itself and they'd have a place to return to once everything had blown over. But that was a flimsy ambition at best and he didn't need the reminder of the Primordial to realize wishes alone never accomplished anything. So he had decided to do something, and he had dragged everyone else into the mire with him under the fake banner of "a greater good." That was a goal of the current venture, but it certainly wasn't his goal.

Nico flipped to another page, reading the last line there before tucking the notebook back into his pocket. "We'll fix this or die trying." A conviction as uncertain as a prayer.

Then the choking surge of power crashed into him like a storm and his own power flashed alive in response.

He didn't need to tell them anything. They had gone through this.

Donovan scattered the people in the area they were aiming for, sending everyone within a 150-meter radius of the location screaming away. Lights flickered on in tall-rise buildings nearby as people fled, an inexplicable fear pushing all their actions to the extreme.

When the area had been cleared, the bright light on Donovan's chest dimmed and Vanessa skated down on a gentle slope of Scaffold's platforms, landing at the edge of the park and facing the direction of the target, her power coalescing at full force, bolstered to new heights by Nico's magic.

The buildings within three blocks of her vaporized along with several meters of foundation and asphalt. Clearing the view.

And there. The target. Still alive. Still inexplicably alive. Unharmed. Uncaring.

Whisper fired shot after shot of sound through Vanessa's heat, the sound blasts sharp enough and powerful enough to tear through blast doors like butter.

Nothing.

Seiji dropped down next, taking Cecilia's platforms as hard drops, descending behind Vanessa. Under Nico's boost, Maaya was a monstrosity as thick as seven city buses across and roughly as long as a thirty-story building. It undulated through the air for a moment before Seiji sent it straight towards their opponent. Vanessa's power had no effect on its lightning-fast movement as it crashed into the figure and piled its massive body onto and around the target.

Erica and Rhian remained in the air with the group, waiting for the results, both girls' powers useless in the face of Vanessa's heat. Even so, they were already preparing, with Erica breathing out and directing a steady flow of her golden smog slowly and precisely around the perimeter of the meteoric crater Maaya had formed in its churning bodyslam. Rhian had already sprouted her razor-sharp wings and long antennae, hovering in place behind Erica while scanning through almost all the arthropods in the entire city before picking out a brown recluse and a black widow, slowly ballooning up the two selections. They would be roughly half as large as the current Maaya by the time she was done.

Their target wouldn't be so easy to kill, even with all their firepower.

And then the crippling surge of power lifted. Of its own volition.

Failure.

"NO!" Nico almost lost his focus on his power as he realized what had happened. "NO! DONOVAN CHECK FOR--JUST CHECK!"

The young man beside him was quiet for a moment.

"The Animus, it's..." Donovan swallowed. "It's still there. Nico, it's still alive!"

"NO! FUCK!"

"Maybe we can recruit--" Rhian spoke up only to be interrupted by Donovan, his voice hard.

"No. It's completely gone. There's no human left in it."

"Get back. Cece, get them out of there," Nico said, eyes wide. His voice was calm again, even as his knuckles gripped his jacket so hard they were paper white.

Garrett whistled loudly, the sound cutting through the night. With anyone entering the effect radius of Donovan's power sent turning back around and away in sheer terror, the fight's opening salvo had been disturbingly silent.

An inhuman howl broke the atmosphere's quiet spell and an echoing rumble resounded from where the giant Maaya had piled its body. Something bulky tore through Maaya's body, immune to the effect of the creature's consumption, though parts of its body seemed to be melting from Vanessa's heat. Seiji's pet writhed in pain, unable to follow its master's mental orders in its agony.

The Animus was as tall as a regular Maaya--30 meters--a swaying mound of roiling human parts that fattened out at the base in some terrifying mockery of a dress. It had no head. Only a female torso with the distinctive X across the base of her throat, profusely bleeding and barely resembling a human, perched on top of the turbulent mass of limbs, eyes, mouths, ears, and anything inbetween. Parts of its body had been eaten away, revealing that Maaya hadn't been entirely ineffective against it. Then the missing parts regenerated as fast as a snap of the fingers and it quickly became clear how the new monster had overcome Maaya's devouring ability.

Where Vanessa's heat had melted off chunks of its body, it regrew those as well with astonishing speed, charging at the obvious, glowing target first. Cecilia had already rigged a series of panels, however, and Vanessa took them like stairs, leaping up to safety as she turned off her power, leaving behind an obliterated section of city. Whatever else this new Animus was, it was no flyer. And no thinker either as the multitude of hands, arms, and legs reached after Vanessa.

Garrett whistled again, snapping Seiji out of his shock as he watched Maaya spasm on the ground, its body flipping and twitching without control, eating chunks of buildings nearby and further devouring a large hole into the ground. At the reminder to retreat, he also dashed up Cecilia's scaffolding, the older woman recycling the lower steps into upper steps to hasten the formation of her platforms without needing to waste time generating completely new panels.

The Animus looked up at them--as best as a torso devoid of any limbs and a head could "look" anyway. The grasping limbs and eyes that made up its small hill of a body was the clearer indicator that it was attempting to reach them.

It shuffled forward a bit further, walking straight into the dense ring of gold mist that Erica had set up. Convulsions wracked its body and the amplified smog's effects began eating away at the newly regenerated flesh at a deadly speed.

Nico hadn't looked away the entire time and even now he stared at the creature. Once upon a time, it had been human. Now? Even if there was something there, they couldn't save it.

"Do you think it's working?" Erica asked quietly, power still trailing out from her mouth as she condensed her ring of airborne poison into an almost solid cloud around the Animus.

The monster itself answered her question, crawling away on fresh limbs even as it lost dozens in the movement. It was regenerating as fast as she could poison it. Maybe even faster. Its movements were no longer as rough and uncoordinated as it had been on initial contact with Erica's smog.

Like it was building a resistance.

Nico sucked in a breath and turned off his power.

Maaya dropped down to a small fraction of its previous size, the wound remaining, though its body was slowly closing up the gaping hole as it wobbled back towards Seiji, hovering weakly above the ground before raising itself towards its master. Erica's smog dropped in density from "near liquid" to "gas" and she immediately dissipated it on realizing Nico's boost was gone.

"Cece, get me closer to it," he started to say. "Spread the panels--"

With another roar that was a medley of animal noises and human screams, the new Animus dashed--fucking dashed--away from them, its speed and accelaration leaving cracks in the cement where its myriad of legs pounded in tandem.

"After it!" Nico called out, already putting one foot forward as he boosted only Cecilia. She complied immediately and the group ran after the monstrosity, following it from the air while Maaya dropped back to the ground, slithering along with them in parallel motion.

"Nico!" Donovan gasped out while running, "Military will be getting here real fucking soon!"

Nico was already faltering, silently cursing his poor stamina. It had only marginally improved in the four years they had been on the run.

"We should leave!" Jonathan called out, having remained silent and ready the entire time.

"No! We did this. We have to finish it," Nico shot back, gasping for breath. "Cece, put me down."

"What?" the scarred woman looked at him incredulously. "Sweetheart, what are you even say--"

"I can't keep up!" he shouted. "There are no people here, so you guys chase it down. Drive it back here. To me."

Whisper grabbed Nico's arm as the frail boy stopped moving, his chest heaving.

"Let me go, Whisper. You have to drive it back to me and I can't stay running in the air with you guys."

Whisper swallowed and shook his head. Nico wrenched his arm away, though the gesture was only for emotional effect. Whisper's hand still remained clamped on Nico's wrist.

"Chase it back here. I can cut off its power. Its regeneration. I think," he took a step down as Cecilia created more stairs. "And I don't think you can stop it from running into people. So...be ready."

Whisper shook his head again, refusing to let go.

"I'm telling you to kill people who might get in the way, Whisper," Nico looked away, his voice quiet. "Now let go."

At that, Whisper's grip loosened, the shock in his expression mirroring that of Donovan's. The two had been aware of it--a colder side to their otherwise fussy worrywart of a brother. But those moments had been few and far in between. And certainly never as callous as this.

"I'll stay with him in case anything happens," Garrett offered, his usual levity nowhere to be found. "Let go, Whisper. There's no time for this."

"If we're meeting back here, then I'll stay behind, too," Jonathan spoke up. "It'll give me time to pick out a different set of waypoints. Somewhere outside of civilization. Go already, Whisper."

Reluctantly, Whisper obeyed, eyes never leaving Nico's face.

Nico didn't look at them, instead hurrying down the steps and standing near a partially destroyed building; the result of Maaya's thrashing. Garrett and Jonathan took up posts nearby, though they wisely gave Nico space.

With a shout of frustration that smashed open a nearby building, Whisper turned around and pursued the Animus, the group's heavy hitters moving swiftly on Cecilia's platforms. They had grown accustomed to putting one foot in front of the other without hesitation, knowing that she formed smaller platforms far more rapidly than larger ones. With the sheer amount of the transparent, glass-like material she had generated so far, Cecilia was having no trouble keeping up with their movements, breaking down older panels as they moved along at a hectic speed.

Rhian flew ahead of them, her wings faster than their run. They had discussed this, at least, even if they hadn't wanted to broach the details. She would be the one in charge of handling things if plans went awry, since her power allowed her to easily single out a target with minimal collateral damage. A really fucking disgusting target, in this case.

Even with her antennae in play, wIthout Nico's boost, she had to cover more ground to make up for the loss of range. Still, she managed to pick up all the arthropods she could find and amass them into a swarm so thick they blocked out the night sky, accompanied by the deafening symphony of wings buzzing. Any other time, any other circumstance less serious, and someone would have made some Biblical joke about the seven plagues. Now, though, it was looking like they'd be raining a part of that exact hell on the unsuspecting city of Chicago.

She banked around a tall building, eyes still on the Animus as it moved towards the end of the "safe zone" that Donovan had previously cleared for them with his power. At the same time, Rhian sent a swarm of bugs to help direct the group on Cecilia's platforms, leading them on a different route to catch up with the Animus while Rhian did her best to steer it around.

Attack, she thought to her army of bugs, numbering in the millions now from the horde she had been preparing while under Nico's boost. The skyful of bugs and insects descended on the Animus, completely encasing its entire body as the vermin bit and stung at every opening. Layer upon layer of arthropods completely covered the towering Animus, obscuring it completely from sight just as it crashed past the rough border of the civilian-free zone. To the rest of the world, it simply looked like Rhian had constructed a hulking cloud of nightmares, raining the occasional wagonfull of dead or injured insects upon the masses as the Animus trudged forward with no regard for surrounding structures.

A cloud that was now rampaging through downtown Chicago, crushing people into mush underfoot and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. It roared again, the sound causing lights to flicker on in windows and people to emerge from their houses. Those unfortunate enough to be in its path were snatched up by its grasping, deformed arms and torn apart, the monster's strength allowing it to smash through buildings like paper.

Rhian's unused spiders from before had finished enlarging. She had been moving them slowly towards the Animus's original location while she had been increasing their size, but now the three-story spiders were tramping through the city at full speed, chasing after the Animus. By all accounts of physics, the creatures should not have been able to move with that speed, but by all accounts of physics none of this should be happening in the first place. Whatever powered them all broke those laws as easily as a child would tear off an insect's wings and legs.

The giant black widow and brown recluse slammed into the Animus, charging at it from opposite directions. They set to gnashing and piercing it with their fangs, flaying chunks of its body off only for the remaining effects of Erica's power to decompose the piles of flesh to sludge. Now the spiders' venoms were inside its body, too, in copious amounts. It only seemed slightly hampered by the spiders, reacting with initial uncoordinated flailing before its mass of arms elongated and wrapped around the cephalothorax of each spider, squeezing them until they burst across the pavement and nearby houses. Their long legs retracted sharply as they rapidly returned to their original sizes, falling pitifully to the ground with the rest of the dead.

Rhian's brow furrowed, but she never stopped amassing her horde. In the time the Animus took to destroy her spiders, she had directed another million onto its already beleaguered body. She would be running out of insects at this rate. Had it not been for the amount she picked up in preparation hours beforehand, she would have been woefully ill-prepared for this turn of events. And even those resources were wearing thin.

The group caught up to the Animus as it veered wildly left and right, blinded and trying to rid itself of the bugs sheathing its entire form. Without direction, its speed was fairly meaningless, and the group was content to keep up with it at a slightly more relaxed pace while waiting for any mishaps. Whisper, Seiji, and Vanessa held back while Rhian worked, ready to move in should she fail in some way, but careful not to interfere without her say-so. Their powers did not complement hers, and killing her bugs would be a waste of her efforts, with no certain effect on their part. Especially with the weakened Maaya still recovering from the earlier wound. Seiji kept the snake-like pet following behind the Animus, but his white-knuckled fists and tense jaw displayed his hesitation to deploy Maaya again after the shock of losing control earlier.

Donovan was doing his best to clear people out ahead of time, but he couldn't exactly send out detailed evacuation plans. He swore loudly as several people tripped over each other in their fear-induced panic, watching helplessly as the Animus ran over them, leaving a chunky smear behind.

On the periphery of his power, soldiers were starting to track them down from the reports of destruction and Donovan hoped the military would focus on evacuating the city first.

With a scream of exertion, Rhian enlarged a fraction of the bugs on the Animus right side, each of them blowing up to ten times their natural size. Falling several meters from her height until she slowly righted herself, she used these bugs to shove the Animus towards the direction they wanted: a U-turn back towards Millennium Park. At least, what was left of the leveled, cratered field that had been Millennium Park not an hour ago.

It worked slightly, and through the senses of her bugs Rhian could feel the creature's body convulse. The same convulsions that had coursed through it earlier under Erica's smog.

"Erica! I think your poison's still working on it!" she called to the group on the platforms.

"That's great, but I can't do anything more with your nasty bugs all over it--unless you want me killing the little shits you spent hours collecting!" Erica shouted back.

"Oh, come on! You can make a big ass circle but you can't sneak your stupid fog in without killing all my bugs?"

"Do you know how detailed that control is, you fucking bimbo?! It takes a fucking assload of precision!"

"Stop being such a fucking diva, Erica! Can you do it or not?!" Rhian snapped back.

Whisper tapped Erica's arm as they ran, glaring at her. Try.

Even for their fitness, the group on the platform wasn't going to be able to keep up the chase in case the creature refused to be persuaded back to its original spawn point.

She groaned loudly, letting the golden smog trail from lips, condensing it into a thin stream that she directed at the moving mass of flesh and bugs. Doing her best to kill as little of Rhian's precious nasties as she could possibly manage, Erica picked a random area and shot the stream in like a hypodermic needle, not even a little sorry when a thin tunnel's worth of bugs and insects died in response. Fuck precision.

At least with a pathway cleared, she focused more of her smog into it, the concentration looking like a giant string that flowed from her mouth into the creature. It didn't seem to be having any effect, but at least the monster was curving slowly back towards the park where Nico was waiting.

"Have I mentioned I hate regenerators?" she muttered as she emitted more smog.

That's when the armed helicopters arrived, the vanguard of military retaliation while the ground troops worked their way through the streets. Donovan felt them first on the periphery of his power's range.

"Rhian! Two military helis coming!" he pointed in the general direction of the green, red, and white pinpricks from the helicopters' anti-collision lights, knowing Rhian could find the rest from her bugs. "Can you take them down before they get a clear bead on us?"

"Stall for me! I need to grow some flyers!" she continued nudging the Animus through the streets as best she could, wincing as it ran through another building and emerged with furniture, wiring, and screaming people in its grasps, barreling through another building immediately afterwards. Those same screaming people met quick deaths in their high-speed collision with cinderblock.

But there was nothing to be done about it now. Getting it back to Nico in the shortest amount of time was the only option to avoid more deaths and collateral damage, so Rhian took a deep breath and steered it through several more buildings, watching as those same buildings practically crumbled in on themselves, no doubt with people and livelihoods still inside.

It surprised her that she was having an easier time forcing it to move. Like it was at least weakening or tiring now.

Either Erica's powers were really showing its effects or the creature wasn't as powerful as it had initially appeared.

Donovan, meanwhile, had been seeping uncertainty and confusion into the helicopter pilots' minds, doing his best to stall their advance and hoping Rhian would find a way to stop them without killing them. Worst came to worst, Whisper could shoot the helicopters down easily, but they were trying to avoid having to kill people if they could help it.

No such luck. He felt their fear and panic as Rhian sent giant flies, moths, and mosquitoes at the helicopters, the insects as large as the helicopters and far more mobile. The pilots, refusing to be deterred by the wall of giant flying insects, engaged combat. Some of the flyers were shot down by the machine guns on the helicopters, but Rhian had sent more than enough for the job.

The insects slammed into the helicopters, several of them perching on the pilot's windshield before moving upwards towards the whirling propeller blades and eviscerating themselves all over the plexiglass, obscuring sight.

This, in tandem with Donovan's emotional manipulation, caused several of the helicopters to dip dangerously as the pilots slowly succumbed to the mental pressure. Rhian slammed a giant moth, already fat originally, against one of the helicopters, pushing it closer to the other. Between insect guts obscuring their vision, giant flying insects assaulting them, and a pervading sense of doom and disorientation, the pilots didn't realize their respective rotorcrafts had now neared each other.

With a combined slam from the moth, another giant fly, and two giant bumblebees, the helicopters crashed into one another, propeller blades shattering in the collision while the tail of one helicopter partially snapped off. Pinpointing the targets now from the flashes of gunfire in the distance, Whisper fired off two torpedoes of sound, practically disintegrating the helicopters before they could crash to the ground and potentially injure others. The bloody mists that were the pilots could barely be seen in the night sky. Donovan had to stop himself from screaming out loud.

The Animus was almost there now. Back in the original area they had cleared for the fight. It was slower, stumbling more. No longer the unstoppable force it had originally been. Small victories. Erica's constant stream of poison was definitely affecting it now. People would never live long enough to need repeated applications, but Erica's toxins did have compounded effects the longer something was exposed to it. The Animus was surely feeling it now, high-speed regeneration or not.

Now the question of stopping it came.

It was still moving quickly--at least 64 km/hour--and nothing had seemed effective enough before.

Whisper was already on the ball. He eyed a spot far in front of the Animus, gauging its haphazard direction before sucking in a deep breath and releasing a howl that smashed a jagged trench into the ground a hundred meters ahead of the monster. He screamed again, deepening and widening the trench as Rhian pushed the mindless monster towards the trap. It obliged, careening torso-first into the chasm where it crushed a number of the bugs on its body.

Rhian removed the rest of her bugs, sending them upwards in a veritable mushroom cloud explosion of arthropods. There was no point trying to hide anymore. She exhaled as the throbbing in her head subsided, releasing the majority of her bugs from her control. If she needed them again, they wouldn't be too far. She hung on to a good several thousand, however, and swept them through the surrounding area, checking for approaching ground troops. None, yet, not that Donovan would have missed them. She just had a better detection range for physicalities.

Once the bugs were cleared from the line of fire, Whisper fired at the Animus, again and again, hammering it back down every time it tried to climb back up. Every shot was powerful enough to almost tear it half, but the creature was nothing if not tenacious. Screaming a volley of precise shots, Whisper punched holes in the parts of its body it was using to try and climb up. Flicking Vanessa a thumbs up, he gave her a quick directive, pointing both his index fingers at the fissure in a forward motion. Go.

She went, Cecilia forming a slide with her panels that Vanessa skated down until she stood within range of the monster. Whisper's attacks shook the ground every time he shoved the monster back down. When Vanessa started her cast, Erica dissipated her magic, most of the golden stream dispersing before the rest was burned up by the mounting heat.

Nico came running now, the commotion and Rhian's makeshift explosion signal of bugs having directed his movements. Garrett and Jonathan stood nearby, hanging back from the battle. Garrett turned to Jonathan with a quick nod and the teleporter closed his eyes, pruning through the potential locations one last time before settling on five and tearing open a portal in preparation.

Vanessa was already starting to heat up the area and Nico scrambled to get as close as he could to the Animus. He settled behind Vanessa, the red rings on his left hand flaring to life vividly. The next time the Animus crawled back up and right before Whisper shot it down again, equally vivid red rings had appeared on half of the hands making up its body. Nico didn't let himself tremble at the sight, gulping down his fear.

At peak power, Vanessa nodded towards Whisper who was still firing from Cecilia's platform. He caught the motion and backed off, breathing hard. Cecilia rubbed his back as comfortingly as she could, the woman's eyes betraying her consternation. For all that she had remained calm and focused throughout the chase, she had not been able to shake the lingering images of destruction from her mind. Her own life had been turned upside down by a similar event, albeit on a smaller scale. To be the cause of one, however indirectly, made her ashamed of herself. She was old enough to see past the basic reactions and realize what they were doing served a greater purpose than small lives thrown to the wind, but that was no salve for the raw wounds--no salve for the slaughter they had caused.

The Animus crawled up one last time, Nico's power having stunted its regeneration, as he suspected. Its body, naturally sturdy, was slowly melting down in Vanessa's heat, revealing black, spidery veins throbbing and pulsing under the layer of protective outer flesh. Erica's poison. The inside wasn't as tough as the outside after all.

It was making strange and terrible mewling noises now, choking and dying as it stumbled towards Vanessa. A shot from Whisper blasted off another hunk of flesh and shoved it back.

Maaya had fully recovered by now, its sluggish movements replaced by the customary whirling and spinning that the group was used to. Seiji sent it in immediately, and it ate up any parts on the ground, first, before working its way up from the Animus's base. The mewling noises turned to agonized screeches as Maaya continued spiraling around the abomination.

The screams stopped when Maaya finished eating the last of the mouths.

Then it was a slow silence punctuated by the sound of squelching and bubbling as the creature finally melted down into nothing, with Maaya cleaning up the remains until nothing was left behind but Whisper's gorge and the areas of flattened, smooth ground from Vanessa's heat. They would take no chances with the Animus.

Nico collapsed to the ground when his sigil flickered off on its own, the intended target no longer in existence for his magic to find and mitigate.

He took several shaky breaths as Garrett ran up to the group, checking for any injuries while Cecilia lowered everyone to the ground. Miraculously, none of them had taken damage.

"Military coming!" Donovan called out. He had noticed them coming a while ago, but the Animus's death had taken priority over everything.

The warning came only a minute in advance.

Around forty soldiers entered the radius, rapidly centering on their open location, Rhian's explosion of bugs having drawn them near. She had directed her bugs to sting and bite as many of them as she could, and another fifty or so soldiers were far in the back, writhing in agony on the ground. More of her bugs congregated around the approaching military trucks and soldiers in the distance, holding them at bay for now. The forty in front of them were the lucky ones who had slipped her notice. Rhian made a mental note to get better at catching details for the future, hovering slightly above the group and sending the nearby bugs crawling up the soldiers' legs, looking for openings to invade.

She didn't need to worry, after all.

Donovan managed to get a hold on all of them, ready to do whatever it took to protect the team. He breathed deeply and began transmitting. Fear was too unstable. Soldiers knew fear. The most elite managed it better than how Donovan could throw it at them. When it came to fight or flight it was always fight, which was absolutely not an option. So Donovan used the deadliest weapon in his arsenal: crushing despair. The kind that drove sane and happy people off building ledges. The kind that drove mothers to drown their own children in bathtubs and hang themselves afterwards--as a mercy.

Immediately, he saw the soldiers closest to him lower their weapons. Some fell to their knees while others openly wept. Either way they all had the same expression of hopelessness and raw anguish in their eyes, their brains filling in the gaps between the forced emotion and their current mindset by dredging up thoughts worse than death. Where simpler minds couldn't bridge that connection, the individuals went still and silent instead, eyes as lifeless as a doll's. A bead of sweat rolled down Donovan's temple. He wouldn't be able to hold such a powerful effect on so many people for much longer. But the moment he released his hold would be the moment his friends would be shot to pieces. He turned to Nico to call for a boost but the expression on his companion's face made it clear how his request would be answered. The time for remorse had long since passed; the half-ruined city in their wake was proof enough of that.

Gritting his teeth until his jaw ached, Donovan clamped his eyes shut. It had to be done. As he willed the tears welling up to go away, Donovan transmitted a single word to every soldier in his radius after mentally urging them to aim at themselves. Shoot. The disjointed rhythm of gunshots rang through the air, only coming to a stop after a full thirty seconds. As soon as it was over Donovan shuddered, struggling to stay on his feet. He tried to tell himself that his exertion was from the use of his power. He couldn't be weak now.

Backup would be here soon. This squadron had only been the first wave. Nico stood up shakily and walked towards the grisly semicricle in front of the group, face blank, eyes impassive.

A pool of blood spread slowly towards his feet, merging with the other sources where one trickle of lost lives met another. He bent down to look at it, quiet and solemn in a way that befitted a funeral. Before anyone could remind him to leave, Nico dipped the corner of the friendship bracelet on his wrist into the thick liquid, staining a fifth of the band a dark red. This wasn't an apology--he wasn't allowed to give one now.

He stood up then, nodding to Jonathan. The Precursors would be on their way, if they weren't already.

"We're monsters now," he announced calmly to the group, that unruffled demeanor still hiding his emotions.

"All according to plan, Nico?" Donovan asked weakly, almost accusingly.

"Do you hate me now?" he took a breath, shaking his head immediately. "Don't answer that."

Nico turned to Seiji, a sharp stab of guilt finally making its way across his mental barriers when he saw the Japanese boy's face drawn and haggard from the ordeal.

"Seiji, let them know Cat's Cradle caused this."

"What? Why?" Seiji's confusion cracked a bit of Nico's veneer.

"Because we're taking responsibility for this, so write the fucking name."

"Isn't this your fault?" Seiji shot back. "Why don't we just leave you behind instead?"

"Then why don't you!"

The group was silent following Nico's outburst and the usually placid young man was breathing in short gasps, fighting back an emotion none of them wanted to name.

"Not the fucking time for this," Donovan growled, "and we're not leaving anyone behind."

"Knowing what we do, Seiji, this was bound to happen," Cecilia walked up to Seiji, patting him on the shoulder. Her movements were stiff, the comfort out of place so near the massacre, but it was something she felt she needed to do--if for no other reason than just her own sanity. Seiji shrugged her off. "Just write the name. It's not such a big deal, is it? ...Compared to everything else."

"It means we're stuck with him," Seiji pointed at Nico, who faked a cold smile in return. "You think I'm fucking stupid, Nico? I write Cat's Cradle and all ten of us are stuck together until we're dead or worse."

"What, you think they can't piece our group together from traffic cameras and phone videos?" Nico's heart was beating a mile a minute, his mouth dry as he tried to hold it all together while Seiji was laying his motivations bare to the group. He hated the kid, but not because Seiji pissed him off. Nico just hated what Seiji always saw in him--the kid had better emotional intelligence than even Donovan's power.

"We're not a 'group' until we start tagging like that. You don't want us to take responsibility, you just don't want any of us to run away."

"Fine," Nico relented, the composed mask fixing itself as he crossed his arms across his chest. "You win. I don't want any of you getting away from this. From me. You want to leave now? Go. You want to leave me behind? Do it. Whatever you do, choose quickly. There's only so many soldiers we can keep killing before they win on sheer numbers. Then there's the Precursors."

"We leave you behind and you out the rest of us," Seiji snorted.

"Wouldn't matter if I did. I doubt they'd be able to track Jon."

"So you're agreeing to being left behind? Bullshit. You never let me win an argument unless there's some way for you to win in the long run."

"Now you're just being paranoid," Nico smirked, hiding his shaking body to the best of his ability. He needed the upper hand in this argument or Seiji would never back down. The guy was too perceptive for his own good, immaturity aside. He was right, after all. Nico was willing to lose this fight to win the war.

"No, I'm not," Seiji turned around, finally acquiescing to the initial request. He directed Maaya towards the expanse of clear ground nearby. The pet scrawled the group's name hastily across the ground, the lettering jagged and broken where Seiji and his horrible handwriting had attempted to fine-control his pet's movements. He had never used his power to write before and the experience was new to both him and Maaya.

Nico refused to display his surprise. It had to look like he intended this, or at least had considered it would happen.

"But you always mean well, you piece of shit, even if you're fucking selfish and never really honest," Seiji muttered as he walked past Nico, stepping through Jonathan's portal first. The abrupt end to the argument was his usual way of ending a conversation.

After a moment of silence, the rest of the group followed suit. The person breathing the biggest mental sigh of relief was Nico.

Jonathan was last, still looking at the damage they had wrought. It took him a few seconds to tear his eyes away from it all.

A memory came to mind as he placed one foot into the absolute darkness beyond the portal.

"This team name is kind of stupid. Why don't you pick something else?" he had asked Nico a year ago.

"I like it," Nico had responded then, shrugging as he dangled his feet above the floor, the bar counter stool too high for him to look anything but childish.

"But why?"

Nico had turned away, looking around the patronless bar. The group had scared everyone away a few minutes ago and the others were busy grabbing as much food and alcohol as they could hold.

"...Because we're 'nothing but a bunch of X’s between somebody’s hands,' maybe?" he had finally responded after a while

"What?" Jonathan had looked at him with a mixture of exasperation and confusion. "Where did that even come from?"

Nico had laughed and apologized, changing the topic back to questions about Jonathan's pre-mage life.

He glanced back to where the mindless Animus had been annihilated until literally nothing remained. The line had been some quote from a book, apparently. Nico had mentioned the name, but Jonathan had been too uninterested to care then.

Maybe he would ask later.

The portal closed instantly behind him as he stepped through.

An unseen impact smashed into the doll’s extended arm, shattering part of the doll's fist and flinging the entire arm off course from a combination of both Hazel’s power and the doll’s strength in whipping the arm. A strange white liquid spilled out from the hollow hand as the arm rolled and bounced away across the grass.

The doll detached its ruined arm with a clatter of chains, running at Hazel as blades slid out along the length of its remaining right arm until the arm resembled little more than a chainsaw.

Meanwhile, Hazel’s follow-up attack coincided with Devotion’s sludge, smacking the four impeded dogs cleanly away from Emma as Determination followed up and charged into the group of anteater dogs, grabbing one by the throat and tearing its head off in a spray of watery, white liquid. Three dogs remained alive, yelping and hissing in confusion. They pawed the ground anxiously as they eyed Emma, uncertain of the attack’s direction. One of them was struggling to move, its legs broken from the force of Hazel’s impact while the other two limped around, their tongues lashing out at Determination. One of the tongues wrapped around Determination’s arm, tearing it off easily while the other dog punctured the shadow puppet’s leg, toppling it forward. Even then, the puppet remained loyal to Emma’s command, reaching out with its one good arm and slamming one of the dogs’ heads into the ground before they could retract their tongues, splattering it across the grass.

One functional dog remained and it snapped its tongue at Determination’s head, destroying the doll again. The last dog backed away from Devotion’s sludge tongue flicking angrily in and out.

The rest of Hazel’s swing collided with the eye-scorpion, making it flinch and interrupting its cast. It shook its β€œhead” in anger, recovering from the blow and looking around furiously for the source of the attack.

Two loud chattering noises made the monsters nearby pause, emanating from the two dolls that had been standing in the back the entire time. They both pointed at Hazel in unison, spinning away from her range after the unspoken direction. The remaining dog and eye scorpion turned to charge her, only to be distracted by the sound of another shotgun round going off as Lawrence fired at the witch above the scorpion.

The shot not only shattered the glass orb in the witch’s hand, but also decimated her hand. Her orb exploded into a condensed spray of the glitter it had sucked in, shredding the witch’s upper torso and face, but doing no damage to the eye-scorpion. As the glitter fluttered down around Lawrence and Christmas, the witch screeched, white blood streaming from the gashes in her body. She spat a black, jagged spear at Lawrence’s direction, the spell flying from her ruined mouth. The spear exploded into black flecks as it made contact with Lawrence’s shoulder, doing no physical damage, but blocking his magic and shutting off the glow around his and Christmas's bodies.

It would be a rough 30 seconds before the effects of the witch’s spell faded.

The dog limped towards Lawrence for a moment before another set of two loud chatters caught their attention. Both of the dolls in the back had pointed straight at Hazel again, though the eye scorpion didn’t seem to pay attention to that. The dog, however, did.

It resumed its uneven gallop at Hazel while the eye scorpion turned to face Lawrence, its high-heeled foot poised for a quick forward strike at the irritating shotgun that had ruined its plans so far.

The scorpion didn’t notice Sander’s charge until his fist collided with its giant eye, making a small dent at the bottom of the cornea.

It immediately flicked Sander backwards with a heavy, horizontal swipe of its front finger-leg, cracking two of Sander’s lower ribs in the process and knocking the wind out of him. The blood mage was sent sprawling backwards almost a dozen meters, coming to a rest on his back after a brief roll. Assuming that distraction was done with, it turned back to Lawrence, its lumbering movements slow as it curled its heel-tail forward again for a strike, apparently abandoning attempts at casting spells for the moment.

Ethan fastballed another three orbs of condensed magic at the creatures, the attack exploding in a display of light that knocked back several of the octopus things, leaving small wounds on their bodies. Sturdy motherfuckers.

Myla shot more neon lights at them, taking advantage of Ethan's attack to cast another round of cutting patterns without the creatures noticing her preparation. She sheared off four legs from one of the octopus creatures and it collapsed, white blood spewing from the stumps.

"I'll have to drop a nuke..." Ethan groaned, loudly enough for the group near him to hear. "Can you handle it, Gen?"

The brown-haired girl in Eric's arms nodded.

"Fuck yeah, I can. Can you handle me?" she grinned at him, her foul mouth making Myla roll her eyes with a slight smile.

"You're...way too young to be hitting on me," Ethan turned back to the group as Genevieve's barrier shimmered into full visibility, the girl making use of Eric's magic generator ability to fortify her shield to the max.

With that, Ethan raised both arms forward, the outline of a white sphere forming in the air above his group's set of monsters. Slowly, it started growing brighter.

Myla increased the rate at which she fired off cutting fields, keeping the creatures below the orb by repeatedly corralling them in every time they tried to move. As three of the octopus-legs broke off from the main group of monsters and charged at the barrier before she could set up another series of cuts, Myla withdrew all her markers from the teams, trusting them to know what they were attacking now.

The various markers returned to her and it was a simple enough matter to send them back out at the new targets, repurposed into cutting edges. The 43 shapes, despite varying levels of cutting consistency, ripped through the three octopus-legs coming at them, dicing them up into uneven chunks from sheer quantity alone. Cowed now, the remaining creatures hesitated to move, giving Myla time to tap Eric's arm and refresh her magical reserves slightly before she renewed her attack. She couldn't risk taking too much when Genevieve needed most of it to maintain the barrier.

A gentle rumble, barely perceptible, shook the building. If someone had been moving while it happened, they would have missed it entirely.

In the lobby of Building A, a few Arbiters sat on the various sofas and couches, discussing the emergency.

"No fucking way it's Menagerie," a girl with green highlights in her hair and dark makeup on her face snarled at a guy with black hair so messy his eyes were barely visible.

"Hey, we all heard the announcement, don't look at me," he raised his pale hands in a gesture of surrender.

"Dude, I was near one of those new kids who got sent out for it," another girl with blonde hair, a loose T-shirt, and light blue jeans spoke up, leaning forward from her seat across the other two. "Bets they'll die?"

"Don't even joke," Highlights responded, snorting derisively at her. "We lost way too many this last year. Fucking Decker was our best combat healer and Shane couldn't even protect him."

"Woah, stop there," Bedhead held up a hand. "Shane almost got cut in half. I dunno about you, but it's hard to defend someone when half of your body isn't responding. And it was either leave one of our strongest Arbs to die or save him. Decker wasn't an idiot. He knew the risks."

"Shane wasn't worth Decker," Highlight hissed back.

"You don't think?" Blondie raised an eyebrow. "Shane can potentially be the next Merlin. Decker was nowhere close to being the next Benediction. Kinda a fair deal, right?"

"Stop. Talking about them like that," Bedhead stood up, shaking his head and turning to leave. He nodded briefly at Brent and Sophia by way of greeting before heading to the elevator.

"You two about to get in?" he asked them.

As the fight moved on, the green triangular markers above each of the monsters faded away.

Beneath Zoe's grasp, the integral structure of the noodle which held Aaron clearly began to weaken. She could feel it reaching the point wherewhich she would soon be able to tear the deliciously unsuspecting noodle apart, thus freeing her comrade, when all of a sudden the noodle tensed and lurched, smacking Zoe aside. Zoe was briefly able to spot Aaron with his mouth around the noodle arm that held him before being knocked back. As Aaron's teeth sank into the cheese-filled noodle for the first mouth-watering bite, a shrill, ear-splitting screech tore across the battlefield. The monster was enraged.

The coils loosened just enough for Aaron to free one arm before becoming tighter than ever before and a sound like unpolished ceramic being grated against each other sounded from above. Another unpleasant sound was heard, though only Aaron was likely close enough to hear as it seemed to be more than one of his ribs cracking. Three, to be exact.

The circular plates of all three spaghetti monsters shifted, revealing that the they were actually made up of several smaller plates, which opened out ward like jagged shards to reveal a large leech-like mouth-- plenty big to accomadate Aaron's size. Any slack the noodle offered instantly became taut as it began to reel the boy in, not unlike a big, tastey fish. The two other spaghetti monsters, flanking the one which was tormenting Aaron, hovered closely to the ground as they steadily approached. Their mouths seemed to pulsate hungrily as they blindly searched for their next meal, nearing Allison, Zoe, and the unconscious Alexis as their noodles continued prodding around for bodies. One noodle arm began moving in Allison's direction while another seemed to be curiously poking Alexis' body as if trying to determine if it could be food.

As the spaghetii monster screamed, so did Angel and the glitter that threatened to rain down upon the group was obliterated. With that threat vanquished, Angel would be able to turn her attention back to the bullet-riddled meatballs before her. With each penetrating bullet, the meatballs seemed to become soggier and soggier until nothing but a pitiful mass of meat, save two pairs of twitching legs, remained.

The third remaining meatball, which had tripped on its way to attack the group with its kin had righted itself and, along with legs, sprouted arms and... were those eyes? It stood before the carnage of its brothers-- fists and (what I suppose you could call) shoulders shaking. Its lower lip 'quivered' as large globs of marinara rolled down its meaty cheeks. In a sudden burst of speed, accompanied by the balance and agility only arms and eyes could offer, it passed Angel and dove for the two guards that had fired. If Angel chose to halt it with her voice, she would inevitably catch the two soldiers who had just helped her.

"RRAAAGGGHHH!" the thing shouted, its vocal cords sounding disturbingly more developed than those of it's dead brethren as the soldiers clicked a new clip into place. But it was too late. The meatball's arms reached out, pushing the two beffudled guards together into something of a sandwich before fatally sinking its razor sharp teeth into the men. The meatball turned to face Angel with a satisfied glint in its eye-- churning blood with marinara as it chewed.

Cal sailed through the air, letting out a war cry that caught the attention of the quadruped mere moments before impact. The bird head barely whipped around in time to viciously bat the girl out of the air but the damage was already done. The surprise of the attack had caught it off guard. Cal’s sword slashed across the left side of the avian head’s face, cleanly bisecting its right eye and destroying its vision on that side of the face. An ear-splitting screech of agony was heard all across the battlefield. The hippo head did a much milder roar in return as an afterthought. Bleeding profusely, a steady stream of crimson stained the monster’s feathers and made a slight hissing noise as the droplets hit the ground. It was definitely pissed off now. The bird head turned to the perpetrator, ready to punish the girl who had wounded it so. The rest of its body followed. Its stomps shook the earth around it as it stampeded towards Cal.

Meanwhile, Grant’s massive projectile was hurled towards the beetle man with surprising accuracy. It seemed to be unaware of the chunk of earth until the very last moment, right before it landed. Luckily for the creature it managed to throw up a boxer-like guard before the chunk’s touchdown, protecting its head. The entirety of the earthen missile smashed into the beetle man, shattering on impact. It was pinned by the rubble, immobile and dazed but not quite dead yet.

As the battle raged, the fishmen continued lumbering towards their comrades. The blue marks above their heads, and the heads of their little group, had dissipated now. Their pace was comically slow as they wandered around and occasionally tripped over their own limbs. It would be a while before they got to the main fight.

The main brunt of the blue monsters’ forces was the vanguard of squirrel babies. They scurried swiftly towards the students, fangs bared and ready to tear into whatever they could pounce on. A sudden flare of purple magic shone from Siena’s direction, prompting the pack to prioritise her as the primary target. However, they would run into some major difficulties in their path. Marcus’ first shot harmlessly kicked up the dirt in front of the squirrel pack, barely fazing them in their charge. His second shot was significantly more successful, nailing the squirrel to the right of the central pack leader in the torso. One down, four to go.

Despite the loss of one of their siblings, the rodents continued as if nothing happened, making incredible distance with their agility. They would reach the truck within seconds. Lily’s grenade would explode before that.

Although the petite girl possessed the determination of a pro, her grenade technique was far from it. In order to lessen the chance of accidentally blowing up oneself, the user must keep a firm thumb on the safety lever as they release the pin. Contrary to popular belief, it is the safety lever rather than the pin which keeps the delay mechanism from beginning its countdown. Lilianna had neglected to check this fact with the supervising officer and the Blue Team would pay dearly for it.

The time it took for Lilianna to aim while the pin was pulled would eat into the grenade's airtime. The squirrel pack moved incredibly quickly, forcing Lily to compensate by aiming her grenade a few metres in front of them. Unfortunately, that meant that its trajectory would be between Marcus and the squirrel pack. The M67 grenade, the standard fragmentation hand grenade used by the US military, has a fatality radius of five metres and an casualty radius of 15 metres. The flight distance of the frag grenade's shrapnel is indefinite, the highest recorded distance being 250 metres. The grenade exploded a metre above its expected landing spot, devastating anything or anyone nearby with a deafening 'boom' of white smoke. Two squirrel creatures were within the fatality radius, torn apart by a combination of concussive force and white-hot shards of metal. They were the stragglers of the group, the slowest runners. The remaining two were shaken of course, miraculously untouched by the debris, but nonetheless continued speeding towards their target. Marcus was right in the middle of the casualty radius while Lily was lucky enough to stand just outside the edge of it. However, she did get injured by some stray pieces of shrapnel.

The remaining two squirrels successfully reached Grant, Padma and Siena. As soon as they were in range, they pounced. Padma brandished a bowie knife to fend them off, stepping forward to shield an exhausted Grant and a still-preparing Siena with her body. The lead squirrel obliged the Indian girl's challenge, launching itself straight at her. Its trajectory was cut off with a quick swing of Padma's knife, and the squirral was thrown back with an open gash on its chest. It squealed in pain but once it landed back on its feet it signalled its companion to attack simultaneously. The leader jumped once again at Padma while its partner aimed for Grant. She didn't think. There was no time to think. Instinctively, Padma's arm shot out to protect her roommate and got severely bitten in his place. She let out a horrible cry and dropped her knife. This hesitation was enough for the leader to lunge at Padma's throat with significantly less resistance than its first attack. Its fangs hit home and Padma collapsed to the ground still screaming, with the two monsters tearing away at her. Her pained voice cut off abruptly as a fountain of blood sprung from her neck. Grant and Siena could watch on in horror as the two remaining squirrels continued chomping down on their teammate.

"Oof!" What little air was left in her lungs after that exertion was promptly expelled as Cal was batted away like a poorly pitched baseball. She hit the ground hard, holding her hands up over her head as she tumbled and rolled. She lost her grip on her sword just as she came skidding to a halt, digging one hand into the earth to stop the momentum. She could feel the dirt pushing itself up into her fingernails, but the ability to coherently process just about anything else escaped her in that moment.

Dazed, she rested her cheek against the cool earth. Her heart was pounding in her ears and her head was swimming. She'd expected the thing to be strong, but... that was a hard hit. A really hard hit. The conclusion of the creature's enraged scream quickly brought her back to the now. The giant hippo-bird was charging. She needed to do something-- to react. To fight. To run away?

As Callan pushed herself to her feet, she looked down at her knees. Aside from the roughed up state of her clothing, she was fine. Not a scrape.

"Heh...," she half smirked, pushing a rogue strand of aquamarine hair out of her eyes.

She grabbed her sword, took three running steps and jumped towards the monster again. A direct aerial attack hadn't worked out so badly just now. She aimed a bit lower this time, hoping to catch the throat of the hippo head with her sword as she swung again. The mobility of the bird head would surely make it a more difficult target. If she could completely wipe out one head, perhaps the other would be easier to deal with.

Lily had no time to analyze the error she made as shrapnels flew towards her. She tried to dodge but her reflexes weren't as fast she wanted them to be. One buried itself on her left shoulder and the other in her left eye. The heat from the shrapnel cauterized its track into her shoulder making the bleeding minimal initially. The second one hit her left eye, transecting her upper lid and then lodging itself into the cornea. Vision was robbed from her eye as the white hot metal lacerated the cornea and immediately opacified the surrounding area. She fell to the ground screaming in pain, her right hand immediately going up to her eye.

The pain however, had some beneficial effect on Lily's disturbed mind. It brought forth a certain clarity she never had before. For a brief instance she knew who she really was and why she was in USARILN. But she had no time to think about those things, not when the battle was still raging. And as soon as she struggled to stand back up, the memories had already faded back into the mist of her mind.

With one hand still covering her eye and the other hanging limply at her side, she looked to her team mates. Her good eye focused on the bloody mess the two remaining squirrels were feasting on. A body. "Oh God..." she muttered, horrified at the realization that it was one of them. Doing her best to ignore the pain, she focused on what she can do. From the looks of it, the squirrel abominations would soon finish their gruesome meal. Grant and Siena was the closest and it was only logical to assume that the monsters would go for them.

She focused on the healthier of the two squirrels and a black string appeared on her right wrist, the other end of it on the squirrel's wrist. The pain immediately abated and vision returned to her left eye. She dropped her hand. Her target wouldn't be too happy with its new injuries.

/Grant Rotem\

Grant watched as the grand man that wore armor was hit with his attack. Well.. more like, blocked, but even so, after the deformed man had blocked, he came towering down and was pinned to the ground by the rubble. A feeling of relief spread through his mind, though he did not bother emoting it, as he put his focus on trying to prepare himself for the next rock. It all seemed to be going pretty well. But he underestimated one thing. He massively underestimated how fast the squirrels had closed in on him and the others. He let out a swear, β€œShit!..” before stumbling back as he saw a squirrel bounding toward him. He shut his eyes tightly as he fell back, literally onto his ass... But no harm came to him. Instead something different came.

A scream. A shout. A yell. Whatever you would call it. He knew whose voice that scream belonged to. β€œPad...” He opened his eyes, watching her knife clatter to the ground, and he looked up at the bearer of the knife, whose blood flew. Her screams. Grant watched with wide eyes as Padma dropped to the ground in front of him, his mouth agape with shock. Just as suddenly it had started, her screams ceased, but the squirrels that maimed her blood-spewing body continued. His mouth was open, but there were no words. No sound. Silently, he got up from the ground. He stepped closer to the squirrels, no thoughts. No definite plan. He didn’t even notice the strange black thread that tied itself around one of the squirrel’s wrists. He just walked until those damn squirrels were in range.

Once they were, he pulled the earth at his side out from below with a touch of his chain, and after it slid out from the earth, it steadily formed into a kind of weapon. A club. He could feel his nails digging into his palm from how hard he was clenching his fists. Not only that, his body lowered a bit, feeling that same exact heavy feeling against him... His breaths turned heavy, as if he were panting. He struggled to keep his footing, and yet, he reeled his chain back and swung the club quickly, low and horizontally, at the squirrels.

It would be a lie to say everything went according to AngΓ©lique’s plan. At first, her plan sounded fine, and was executed just the way she wanted. Her scream did not affect the meatballs any further than it already did, but the cloud of glittery dust was swept away into obliteration. Just as she turned to watch the meatballs turned into minced meat, she noticed to triangle symbol above the monsters faded away just before bright ball of light coming from one of the three other teams shone brightly on the battlefield. This moment of distraction, however small, held dire consequence as Angel’s attention snapped back at her own battle as soon as she had heard a loud β€œFUCK!” being shouted right beside her.

While she was distracted by what was happening on the far side of the battlefield, a third meatball that was coming from the other half of her team - surely the one who knocked out two of green team’s members - made its way towards the soldiers who had shot down the first two meatballs into their grounded demise. It was all but too late for the black-haired young woman to do anything as the meatball reached the two guards with the same incredible speed it had shown earlier. Had she shouted, she would have affected those two men. Powerless, she watched in horror as the ball made of meat, eyes, limbs and teeth grabbed the men like mere sandwiches and took a bite in them.

The metal singer felt revolted in front of such sight, her stomach churning as soon as the meatball turned towards her, a mouthful of upper torsos dangling from its maw. There was this feeling deep inside her stomach that was trying to surface. Just as she thought she was about to throw up, it wasn’t the case. What she felt wasn’t solely sickness, but rage. This feeling that had been plaguing her deep inside, she let it out once more in a scream even more unrestrained than the previous. While it was true she didn’t hold much love for the two guards that were escorting her, the simple thought of having humans dying in such a horrible manner was just enough to trigger an unspeakable hatred towards these monsters.

However, this monster was smarter than its two dead comrades. As soon as he saw Angel emanating a bloodcurdling shriek, it blocked its… ears? And its eyes as well. As such, the meatball took the brunt of the sonic wave relatively well, not faltering on the ground like the others before it. There was however the cringing face of the creature when it was exposed to her scream. Did her scream was loud enough to actually pass through its shielded ears, or was the sonic wave so intense it actually physically hurt its body? As AngΓ©lique finished screaming, the meatball opened its eyes, a smug look on its face after being able to still stand in front of the screaming metalhead after taking on one of her most lethal attacks. In response, the Canadian girl frowned and clenched her teeth out of spite.

β€œSo you aren’t a complete dumbass after all, you piece of shit. You want to play like that, fine then!” Angel hissed through her teeth.

"Christopher, change of plans! As soon as you are finished transforming, go help the others! And you there, Blondie, don't just fucking stand around doing nothing. Help them too for fuck's sake! Angel barked orders at her two teammates.

Just as the meatball was about to make a move on her, the black-haired rock idol let another shriek, this time far more controlled than the previous rage-induced scream, however still bearing a tone of pure spite. Not falling for that attack, the meatball again shut its eyes and ears. But by doing so, the creature left itself exposed and oblivious to the world around it. And Angel, being far from stupid, seized this advantage and made a bold run towards the creature while still screaming what little breath she still had in her lungs. Using the creature’s self-imposed blindness, she crouched up below it and grabbed one of the rifles the guards dropped when they had been grabbed. By the moment Angel’s scream stopped, she didn’t care if the gun was loaded or how to hold it properly. She just pulled the triggered as she awkwardly held the rifle’s barrel just a few inches in front of the meatball’s mouth. Her finger held the trigger down as the young woman shut her own eyes, and her mind holding on to the hope that the gun would do its job and leave a pile of minced meat by the time she would open her eyes.

Just as she felt she was getting close to finishing the tentacle off, Zoe was batted away, and struggled to regain her balance as she stumbled backwards, the breath knocked out of her and anger flashing across her face. Out of the corner of her eye, she thought she caught a glimpse of Aaron... biting it? What the hell was that meant to do? Answering her question, the thing let out a noise halfway between a roar and a scream, before revealing a mouth that looked more than capable of eating any one of them alive, along with its two buddies doing the same. Oh for the love of...

Zoe was quickly reaching the end of her patience both with the creatures and with Aaron. For now, she was happy to take it out on the noodle that had knocked her away after a look back at the two others confirmed they weren't needing her help right now. A quick glance between her black-lined arm and the wisps slowly rising from the spaghetti confirmed that her power was still taking effect, which hopefully meant she'd be actually able to tear it off if she tried again considering how close the noodle had felt to snapping earlier. About time, if you asked her! Invigorated, she started to move, lunging forward to grab the spaghetti.

She didn't realise it, but her enthusiasm at the prospect of tearing the thing apart was only partially her own, her stigma-driven bloodlust unconsciously bringing a slight smile to her face. While it would have been slightly disturbing anyway considering the situation, there was also a glint of murder in her eyes that meant it wouldn't have been surprising if Aaron thought she was about to attack him for a second.

She wasn't of course - her bloodlust was at least directed towards the enemy, although Zoe wasn't about to spare Aaron completely, eyes flashing with anger as she glared at him, practically snarling. "I've half a mind to let the damn thing have you!" As she spoke, she grabbed with one hand on either side of the part she was weakening and pulled as hard as she could to finally try and rip the spaghetti limb in two. Despite her words, she really didn't have it in her to leave anyone to die. Not that they needed to know that.

Emma was taken aback by the violence that her Tulpas acted with- even if it was just creatures that were in essence not real fighting each other before her she still cringed with the ferocity that Determination attacked the dog with. All this violence... it can't be right, can it? But... aren't we the good guys? She wasn't sure herself if what was happening before her was really okay- technically, as far as she knew the creatures Menagerie created were a threat, but it still felt wrong for her to command something to rip off a dog's head, even if the dog was trying to kill her.

She shook away her doubts. Right now she had to fight, for everyone else's sake- she couldn't worry about her own melodrama. She summoned Determination again...

Or, she tried to.

She tried again.

And then she realized she couldn't.

Of course her own self doubt was impeding her ability to muster up her determination, but Emma didn't understand her power or herself enough to make the connection. All she knew was that she wasn't feeling determined enough, with little understanding of what exactly that meant. Devotion looked back at Emma, clearly befuddled- or at least, once again Emma had personified the Tulpa and applied the emotion of confusion to a cursory glance back by the inhuman creature.

And then suddenly a scream broke out across the battlefield, louder than anything else. Emma glanced around- it wasn't anyone in her group, but she was sure that someone was gravely injured... and that was the best case scenario. Concern flashed over her face, but she knew she couldn't worry about the other groups. She needed to help Hazel and Lawrence and the others. She focused... she needed to help... and so came Charity. She knew that it had an energy drain of sorts- she doubted its effectiveness, but she did not have much choice. She glanced at the two dogs, considering them- in truth they were so pitiful that Emma couldn't bring herself to kill them, but she told herself that they were no longer threats and could be disregarded.

"Charity, Devotion, follow me!" She was slightly more comfortable commanding the creatures, but uncertainly still crept into her command. They followed all the same.

Instead she moved to back up Hazel and Lawrence, running to stand by the former. She glanced at the wound on her arm- they appeared superficial, but they were certainly worse than the meager pockmark's on Emma's own skin. She had to worry about the charging doll first, and to this end she called out to her Tulpas. "Devotion, slow the doll! Charity, drain it!" Her voice was shaky but they complied. She expected Hazel to attack it as well. Assuming they were successful and their safety was assured she would ask, "You're injured... are you okay Hazel?"

Hazel Baker

Her attacks collided with the doll, exploding off its arm before it can do any real harm.

It almost surprised her as well, for she half expected the doll to simply pirouette out of the way, considering what happened earlier. There was a secret to their uncanny dodging just a moment ago, and she had a good idea of what it was. The dolls were linked together somehow, and one of them saw her movements, and warned the doll of danger, causing it to dodge instinctively. Right now, the two who had sat idle in the back moved just out of her range. What it meant in her head was, the dolls sent in one of their numbers to gauge her range and threat, before making up a plan of their own. They were more intelligent than they looked.

But, she was in no state to actually convey that to anyone. The pain from the numerous gashes on her right arm was cutting through her drug induced haze; Hazel was slowly getting more lucid and aware of her surroundings.

Small hands caressed her cheeks, soft and without malice.

Her breath caught in her throat, as her hand whipped up to her cheeks. Nothing. Simply her own sweat dripping down from her brows. Her breathing was getting irregular, though she still remained aware of the battlefield. The doll rushing her had less range than she did, especially now when its arm was busted. It was also attacking, which, based on what happened during her previous attack, meant it wouldn't be able to dodge as quickly as it did the first time.

"You're injured... are you okay Hazel?"

She blinked at the voice, for a moment seeing not Emma but a young girl with short hair. She grinned, and though she was missing a tooth, it was still a friendly face. It was after all the face of-

Gritting her teeth and ignoring it, she threw a punch, a short left jab at the doll, taking advantage of her superior reach over the doll. The haze still quickly fading from the adrenaline and pain, she had started filling up her thoughts with meaningless things like recipes and lists.

Christmas had barely put the large jacket on and eeked out a "Thank you" in response when the shotgun rang out again, the noise still disorienting and painfully loud. Another sudden spray of glitter glimmered into view as the witch's orb broke and he covered his face again, hearing only a terrifying screech before the sense of calm vanished.

He stopped breathing for a few seconds as Lawrence's power flickered off. It hurt to even think as panic and fear flooded out every conscious thought, threatening a stomachache and dizziness as adrenaline shot through him. The sight of the looming eye and its heel, poised to strike, drove home the sense of sheer terror that was the constant background noise throughout Christmas's life, the emotion one he would never, ever grow used to.

He finally managed to breathe in.

And screamed.

The mad scramble that followed after had him scraping at the dirt and grass with his hands as he bolted, the loose jacket hanging off one shoulder while panic drove him as far and as fast as he could run.

He was only looking at the relative safety of the trucks when he stumbled over Sander's legs, toppling forward across Sander's calves with another loud cry.

The fall snapped him out of his mindless panic. Christmas breathed rapidly as he hastily crawled off of Sander, trying to gather himself while the iron taste of blood in his mouth reminded him of the requirements behind Sander's power. He had bitten the inside of his cheek in the fall, scraping his chin and hands as well. The pain pooled together with the stings and cuts from the glitter, and Christmas remembered that he was bleeding from too many small injuries to count, including the searing pain in his right eye.

He would have panicked again, but the sight of Sander lying on the ground cleared out a small haven of sanity in the flood of fear threatening to drown him once more.

"San-Sander...?" Christmas called out, afraid to touch his roommate again in case he made any injuries worse, especially after falling all over Sander a moment ago.

Sander overestimated his strength. The blood did that. It made him feel powerful, even when pitched against impossible odds such as these monstrosities. His recklessness had its price.

He was keenly aware of the monster’s mutated limbs moving. He saw it rose and moved with his improved perception, the motion clear and predictable. But he was too slow. He couldn’t move out of the way in time.

A wet crunch heralded sickening pain as the blow launched him through the air. He went tumbling through the landscape, then finally left sprawling on his back on the ground. His lungs burnt, but each breath only served to send lances of pain through his side. After a few minutes of struggling, he finally settled for quick, shallow gasps of air. Leaning on his good side, he tried to pull himself up, but his first attempt ended in painful failure as his right arm was too slippery with the blood still leaking from Kusari’s knife wound.

Just as he was bracing himself for the second attempt, something hit his legs hard. He groaned, instinctively curled in onto himself, which only served to aggravate his cracked ribs. A quick look at his feet erased his fear. No monsters were gnawing at his lower half. It was just Christmas. The blond boy called out his name, but he only responded with a barely audible grunt. Seeing as he could barely form words without feeling like retching his guts out, he raised a bloody arm, motioning Christmas to get closer.

Christmas struggled between his instinctive desire to flee again at the sight of Sander's bloody hand beckoning him closer and the conscious desire to help his injured roommate. He hesitated long enough that he seriously considered just running for the trucks.

Fear of the consequences won out in the end and he crawled forward tentatively, guilt mixing with his shame that he hadn't been able to help immediately.

"I--uh..." he held out a shaking left hand, small drops of blood falling near Sander's face.

The craving flared, cutting through the haze of pain. On closer inspection, the blond boy was bleeding, and the way he reached for Sander, it was almost like he was offering. And Sander was not about to turn him down. Whatever resolve he had, Sander left it behind in the truck. He caught Christmas’ hand, the wound on his right arm made his grip far weaker than it could have been, but with his enhanced strength, it was enough.

β€œNo take backs”- He smiled wryly as his tongue darted out to lap up a drop of blood that landed on his lips.

This was the first time someone had used Christmas's healing power. The sensation was like a light current through his body and he shuddered as the magic activated, wrapping them both in a translucent, glass-like veil of slowly shifting mist. His power began knitting together Sander's injuries at a snail's pace from the drop alone.

Once Sander had been given a taste, it was always hard to stop. After all, he needed Christmas’ blood. They needed him to fight, and he couldn’t do that on his back with a few broken ribs. He needed to heal. He needed this.

His thumb dug into the open wound on the blond boy’s arm, eliciting sharp cries of pain from his terrified roommate, before pulling it toward him. He latched on to the cut and began drinking. As the pain on his left side lessened, he lifted his good arm and held onto the front of Christmas’ shirt.

Pain was something Christmas was used to, but the raw, searing sensation of someone digging into his injuries was on an entirely different level. He bit his trembling lower lip as Sander drank, unsuccessfully trying to stymie the tears and whimpers. His body reflexively struggled and tried to pull away, but Sander's grip on his shirt held him firmly in place.

The same familiar warmth fluttered in Sander's chest so many times before, but he still came undone so easily in its presence. Christmas’ squirming pulled on the wound on his arm, to which Sander responded with an annoyed grunt and pushed at the blond boy with his good arm, flipping them over. He dug a knee in the boy’s stomach, effectively pinning him place.

"San--" Christmas had started to protest when the world tilted sideways and he found the wind knocked out of him with a heavy weight pressing onto his stomach. He coughed out the rest of his sentence with no intelligible effect, trembling while Sander towered over him, still drinking from the wound on his hand. That lurking panic gripped him again, and Christmas's struggling grew more frantic to no avail.

A pale hand gripped the hair on top of Sander's head, and another wielding a knife edged against the back of his neck. "Let him go, Sander. I am not going to tell you again." Kusari spoke, her low voice right next to his ear. She had fully recovered a few moments ago, and of all the things she was expecting to see as she ran to the battlefield, this was the worst case scenario. She had hoped Sander would have eliminated at least one enemy, but here he was injured and about to suck Christmas dry. She was perfectly calm on the surface, looking as if the explosions and screams all around didn't faze her. It was a front to say the least, but false courage was just as good as the real thing as long as it got the job done, right? She knew what she was doing looked bad, but she wasn't quite in the mood to beat around the bush. If Sander couldn't control himself he would get them all killed.

Cold metal was a stark contrast against Sander’s feverish skin. He hissed as the sharp edge pressed against his bare skin, body tensed and on full alert, Christmas’ bleeding wrist forgotten. Moments after the threat left Kusari’s mouth, Sander twisted in her grip with the strength and speed that couldn’t belong to a lanky teenage boy, throwing his elbow backward in a strike.

Kusari was half expecting Sander to respond with violence, he'd just done it to her after all. Sander was lucky the sudden movement hadn't caused her to slice his throat by mistake. She let go of his head, and blocked the elbow using her arms. He was certainly stronger now, as she was easily sent backwards. She planted her feet, just barely allowing her to skid to a stop. Her arms were nearly numb and were throbbing in pain, thankfully her ability was already healing the damage.

"You dense motherfucker." She growled, her visage the very picture of wrath. "Look around you, this is a battlefield! We don't have time to deal with your dumbass addiction. While you're over here thinking of yourself, one of us has already died!" Kusari pointed towards the blue team. While she was running to help her own group she had heard Padma's horrifying screams as her life was snuffed out. She would be hearing that in her nightmares, she knew it. For whatever idiotic reason she believed they could make it out of this with no casualties. That was clearly naive. She was frustrated, she was angry, but worst of all she felt helpless. It seemed the only thing her body was good for was taking abuse.

"I'm not going to take this anymore, I'm going to fight. You better do the same or I'm going to shove my foot so far up your ass you'll be tasting rubber for a week!" Kusari was finished yelling at Sander, she turned around and sprinted towards the two targets she believed she could easily handle, the dogs. Her first victim would be the dog trying to attack Emma, Kusari blindsided it from the side, sending a kick straight to the throat. She then leaped onto the dog, and jammed the knife into where its jugular should be, twisting the knife and yanking it out sideways. A spray of white blood splattered her, and the dog stopped moving. Her eyes locked onto the last dog. "Oh I didn't forget about you!" She nearly tripped over the corpse of the dog as she gained momentum, there was an odd feeling in the back of her head as she realized something. These things couldn't kill her, so she could simply keep throwing herself at them until she won. As long as she wasn't disabled somehow anyway.

Hearing her yell, the dog turned around and lashed out with it's tongue. "W-what?" Kusari tripped forward as a wave of pain welled up in her right leg. As she fell onto her back she saw that her leg was barely hanging onto her body, it had basically been cut off. "M-my leg... that's... My leg? Huh?" Kusari's teeth chattered as tears began forming in her eyes. She was no longer able to keep up her facade of courage. She let out a scream of pain, only to then have the dog run towards her and jump onto her. She tried to fight it off with her arms, but couldn't stop it from digging tearing into her throat with its razor-sharp tongue. The screaming was replaced by manic gurgling as blood poured from the wound. She gripped her knife so tightly her nails dug into her skin, and she began stabbing the dog over and over, aimlessly puncturing it. The dog eventually fell over, dead, and Kusari was left grasping at her throat to hold in her blood. Breathing was impossible as well, so her head began to feel light headed. Yet she didn't pass out, her throat managed to heal just enough to allow her to stay awake, unfortunately. The pain was intense, between the stinging in her throat and her severed leg she was in agony.

She had gotten full of herself. Perhaps throwing herself at monsters wasn't such a smart idea after all.

Sander's weight on his stomach was not helping Christmas's already shallow breathing as the wide-eyed terror set in again when he fully realized Sander might kill him. He hyperventilated, sobs and gasps alternating as his breaths came too fast for him to control. The pain from his arm was almost forgotten in his renewed dread at the sensation of overbearing pressure holding him down. This was ice-cold fear and a reminder of nightmares that sank like lead to the pit of his stomach, making him want to vomit. He wanted to run, hide, escape. Christmas scrabbled at the ground, unable to free himself from Sander's strength while incoherent noises slipped from his mouth in breathless bursts between desperate gasps for air.

Meanwhile, Kusari’s words registered to Sander, but it hardly looked that way from the outside. Sander simply held her gaze quietly, first with wild eyes and clenched jaws, but then his expression mellowed. His crimson eyes just looked weary, as if Kusari’s rant was something he had heard too many times before. He might as well have. Once she was gone though, he looked at her retreating back, mumbling:

β€œIf only all of us had the luxury of choice…”

A soft whimper brought him back to his immediate surroundings, and he regarded the bleeding body beneath him. His left arm was still holding onto a fistful of the blond boy’s shirt, something Sander quickly rectified. He let go, the line of his jaws hardened again as he hastily grabbed the loose sleeve of Christmas' jacket and began wrapping it around the boy’s bleeding wrist. With that done, he grabbed Christmas’ good hand and forced it on top of the makeshift bandage.

β€œDon’t let go.”-His voice cracked a little as he let out the breath he had been holding.

Christmas didn't seem to hear him, tear-blind eyes staring at some terror that was neither here nor there as he continued sobbing between quick, uneven breaths. But there was nothing to be done about that now. There was no time.

Immediately afterward, he scrambled to his feet and stepped away from Christmas as the smaller boy turned to his side and immediately pulled his knees up to his chest, breathing like a fish on land even after Sander got off. Christmas's right hand gouged the ground as he dug his fingers into the dirt while his "bandaged" left hand curled instinctively against his chest. Common courtesy demanded that he help the poor boy up, but Sander didn’t trust himself to stop once he got started again. He could tell that he was soon reaching that point of no return in the course of his blood high, where his limbs ached for violence and his blood boiled at the slightest provocation. At least his ribs no longer rattled with every breath, though he did just now notice the mist of light that surrounded his body. He spared a few moments for the blond boy, his expression pulled into a grimace, jaws twitching with unsaid words. In the end, he chose silence, as he had so many times before.

Marcus Howell

A hit and a miss - Marcus considered that a success. He was currently backing towards the transport, squirrels approaching, while he readied another shot. They were coming up quickly now, and the group would be in trouble if nobody else did anything about them. He lined up another shot, stopping in his tracks to take aim, and…

"Marcus, take cover!"

He turned his head slightly to look at Lily, who was standing nearby, arm arced as if she had thrown something. A glint in her hand caught his eye, him at first believing it to be the object she was about to throw. It was a pin. A grenade pin to be precise. Almost in slow motion, his eyes locked onto the object in the air, currently slightly over his head.

His teammate had just thrown a grenade at him.

Or, not at him per se, but he was currently occupying the area in which she’d thrown it. He didn’t know much about explosives, but he had a pretty good idea of what was about to happen to him, and none of it was pleasant. His feet turned of their own volition, and he found himself turned towards the transport, running in a blind panic. There was no way he’d be able to get out of the blast zone in time. His eyes darted to the last thing he was about to see: the determined look of Lily, still confident in her throw, as everything around him seemed to stop.

While Lily’s face showed determination, Marcus's showed desperation. Two different emotions, both with the same goal: survival. He’d been in such a situation before; a scene he relived in his head in what he assumed to be his life flashing before his eyes.

The asphalt was cold, as cold as the blood in his veins and as cold as the night sky that stretched infinitely beyond above him. The stars twinkled brightly...odd, they hadn’t done that before. Each star twinkled once, and was subsequently snuffed out, but he felt himself grow warmer. Somewhere up there, Dreamcatcher watched them all from the safety of his cocoon. He was safe and sound far above, while those still stuck on the ground suffered because of it. He had questions for the beast; "Why?" "How could you let this happen?", but the fading of his vision suggested he'd never get the chance. The warmth in his chest grew hotter, curiously hot, as if each star had lent him a small portion of its light. As the last star faded and the night grew black, he snapped back to reality.

The world rushed to meet him, folding itself inward to allow for his safe passage. His head swirled, a combination of panic, confusion, and motion sickness. He heard static, loud static that seemed to be coming from directly behind him. The ground shifted as well, his feet scuffing through the dirt and catching something, sending him sprawling to the earth below. He did not move to catch himself, his arms preoccupied with reflexively covering his head as his body impacted. Behind him, much farther behind him than previously, something exploded. At least, he assumed it was an explosion; he felt a rush of heat, and the normal sounds of the environment were silenced and replaced with a high-pitched ringing.

His vision swirling, his ears ringing, and his stomach threatening to turn itself inside-out, Marcus slowly raised his head. It took a moment for him to regain his senses, and it was his vision that returned first. He certainly was not laying where he expected to be laying, but more importantly; he had apparently not been eviscerated by hot shrapnel.

As his mind struggled to comprehend what had just happened, his ears stopped ringing. What replaced that was far worse; the screams. Two sets, one of which was cut disturbingly short. He reached for the pistol that had left his grip, retrieving it from its spot nearby. His legs shook, but slowly steadied themselves as he struggled to his feet, taking a couple extra steps as he righted himself.

There’d be no time to figure out how he’d survived until later. For now, he looked at the horrifying scene before him, and his stomach twisted again. Focus. Focus on the target. He raised his gun uncertainly, trying to stop the shaking in his arms long enough to regain his aim. If there were any squirrels left by the time Grant and Siena were done with them, he’d take the shot.
