There's a little coffee shop on the corner of 57th Street and Owl Overlook Boulevard, a popular little place among the locals that has been in business for quite some time. Alex's father ran the place for decades, the place a quiet nook for people to hide away from the public to enjoy a cup of coffee in peace, perhaps even a scone or two. Just above was a little two bedroom loft apartment that Alex called home her entire life. It was by no means a tragic life, raised by loving parents as a single child and given everything they could afford, it was a lovely picture in the face of cruelty of the dystopian underbelly.
Wanting to follow in her mother's footsteps of being a police officer Alex took up criminal justice in college while working in the coffee shop, mostly in the back with inventory and baking with her father. During her senior year her mother was gunned down during a routine call for assault and battery, having taken a full clip when she put herself between the victim and the perpetrator. Within weeks Alex dropped out of college to help her grieving father run the shop, doing anything and everything she could to keep the business going. A year later her father died, the coroner stated it was old age but she knew it was from heart break.
Now, just a couple years later, Alex continues to run the shop just as her father did, keeping it a safe haven for everyone no matter their background, creed, color, gender, or status. She still serves the same apple crumble and dark roast coffee special on Tuesdays, having kept the menu exactly as it is for now at least. It's all she can do to keep the shop the way people have known it, wanting to keep her home together in any way possible.
