A cover for a collection of Isaac Asimov's short stories by Peter Elson

TL;DR Summary

  • Discord chat for brainstorming and questions.
  • Science Fiction setting; a just-colonized planet
  • Inspired by Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Frank Herbert, Philip Dick and Peter Hamilton; all sci-fi authors.
  • The colony is just getting set up; soil detox, water purification and building homes, as well as prefab buildings.
  • Rip van Winkle themes; the colonists have been in suspension way longer than anticipated due to unforeseen difficulties. Some of them died in the tanks due to mechanical failure.
  • Characters should have useful skills and trades that would come in handy in a working, self sufficient colony. They are trained to be frontier people, to set up the colony for later. There are relatively few military types, though they have a militia-type familiarization with personal weaponry; these are engineers, farmers, electricians, technicians of various sorts.
  • Technology level is roughly equivalent to what was shown in the Aliens movies, though there is AI, AI-assisted auto-fabrication and other advanced technologies.
  • Several NPC's and semi-PC type characters, or even a second character. Multiple characters beyond the main.
  • When the colonial ark arrives, the characters are thrust into roles of leadership due to starship damage suffered in transit; the senior leadership are dead or comatose. Our characters inherited the role by attrition and are facing a monumental task.

@HeySeuss Let me be sure that I understand this correctly.

Our group was on a ship that experienced difficulties and landed on the goal planet 100 years late. We built a colony with what knowledge we had and acquired from the project and are now almost a year into landing on said planet. Sound about right? Please correct me if my sum-up is incorrect.

Also if I may, I'd like to make a character with a PhD MD in Biomechanical Engineering with advanced knowledge in Cybernetics and Robotics used in the advancement of prosthetic augmentations as well as advances in Automaton engineering. If this won't work let me know.

More than a hundred years. A lot of time has elapsed. And yeah, I wanted to skip past the part where they're just building prefabs and getting their feet under them.

Question: Are prosthetics advanced enough for them to be seen as superior to regular limbs?

@Atrexiel@HeySeuss I second this question! If I make this character, I would like to know how far advancements in this area would be before putting something together.

Well, there are several ways to approach this. I am generally of the feeling that such cybernetics exist for people with a strong medical need but the required medical followup and care is such that it wouldn't be for someone to just lop off their arm to get a stronger one.

Exactly what I needed. Thank you. If they were superior without drawback, there would be no reason for my character not to be a cyborg. This pretty much finalizes my build, I'll post the CS soon.

I understand the characters have been in suspended animation/hibernation for 100+ years, but has this process; used for the space travel suspended physiological growth? Do the characters remain the age they were when the started the journey?

I find it amusing that you offer this suggestion, simply because I was thinking the same thing yesterday while driving. @HeySeuss mentioned to me that it was OK to make my character a veteran. Then I remembered this Supply Sergeant I knew in the Army National Guard who was also a Doctor of Prosthesis. I was contemplating using him as a basis for a character. I asked the Sergeant why he did not become an officer in Medical Services. He explained that his NG job was fun and didn't require a whole lot of thought or worry. It was something fun. If he became an officer he would have worry about something. Since he had enough of that in his Civilian career, he didn't need it in his "hobby". Having served as both an enlisted man and an officer, I could relate to his response and the conversation ended.

Anyway, I can choose another profession. I mentioned Geology and biology earlier. I may remain there and deviate slightly, but I can still make him a veteran. I had a BA at age 25 instead of 22 like most who come out off HS ang go right to college because I spent 3 years in the US Army. This can work.

The process is a type of stasis, absolutely. I did not go into details but if someone has the science to come up with something viable, I am all for.

Check out Cyronics. IN this case it could be an unintended consequence of the suspended animation process. There was a ST:TNG episode in 1992 where retired Commander Montgomery Scott's molecules were suspended in a transporter beam until the Enterprise-D came along and completed the beam bring him back alive after 75 years in "stasis". Not the same thing, I know, but at least his appearance remained unchanged over that 75 year period. Am I grasping here?

@Gunther Hmm.. I only picked that because I know a lot about it, however, perhaps we could be partners? I mean if there are several colonists their would need to be more then one doctor.

If however you are set on it, I could make my character the Chief of Engineering as I have a fairly large knowledge of that subject as well and it doesn't seem as though anyone else has chosen that yet. If you had a character already in mind then go ahead and go for your first option and I'll go with my second. =]

There would definitely need to be more than one doctor. And we can always play people who are department heads and the next in line.

I know nothing of Prosthetics! @Heap241 I'm a retired soldier in real life. I would probably better off as the security manager/officer or whatever you want to call him.

@Gunther Wonderful! Then I'll be the PhD MD in Biomechanical Engineering with a speciality in advanced cybernetic prosthetics and robotics!

@HeySeuss Before I make my character, could you clarify how advanced this topic would be at this point and what materials I would have to work with?

Name: Sylas Gunderson DVM.
Gender:Male
Age:34
Appearance:
His short brown hair is typically combed to one side which is a bit different from his blonde and red tinted beard. Though it is short and neat something about it seems to stand out as unruly. Perhaps it is because most of his colleagues are clean shaven or have tight goatees. His eyes are a light blue and match his round face. His nose is narrow and long but not comically so. He is pretty average height and a little overweight, though it isn't because he is lazy, it is more about his diet than anything else. Some days he works so much that he eats vending machine food for all 3 meals of the day for several days at a time. He continues to work out 3 or 4 days a week as time permits. His scrubs hide his gut and small man boobs very well.

Bio:
Sylas was born to a single mother whose husband died shortly after his conception in a military training accident. His mother worked hard and they barely made ends meet. They struggled his entire life and there were many times that the electricity bill didn't get paid and sometimes their dinners consisted of only bologna sandwiches. She remarried when Sylas was seven, an age he will never forget as it changed his life forever. The man his mother married was a wealthy man, but Sylas never knew what his stepfather did for money. His stepfather, James, would be gone for the majority of the day and would sometimes be gone all night as well. His mother soon became bored with her new life of not having to work and after the shopping sprees became too mundane she turned to alcohol for enjoyment. James paid for everything Sylas ever wanted. He went to private schools and then to college. Though his mother and stepfather have been largely absent from his life he harbors no grudge toward them.

By the time he turned 30, he was considered the top DVM in the country. He even became familiar with everything from the mundane to rare parasites and even neurology in just about every animal on earth. He even studied many marine life creatures. His knowledge of animals is considered unprecedented.

He joined this mission with a few assumptions. One would be that maybe for once he could make a difference somewhere. The animals they would bring with them would be vital to starting a new world and if they came across any new life forms he would be the first to examine them. He worked too much to have any family or girlfriend so he wouldn't be missed nor would he have someone to miss.

Psychological Profile:
Sylas is familiar with politics and is comfortable playing the game of corporate life. He is good at moving up the ladder so to speak and getting what he wants. He isn't so much manipulative just tells people what they want to hear. He is a bit of a sociopath in that he doesn't feel empathy but that doesn't mean he is a psychopath. His feelings are usually bottled up and not expressed but he is very level headed and isn't prone to outbursts or exploding in a rage. He is always calm and logical.

Skillset/Occupation:
Dr. Gunderson is an expert with a very wide variety of animals, both in behavior and medically. He has performed thousands of surgeries and other treatments on just about every life form that isn't human. He has experience with marine animals but it is limited. He has knowledge of various parasites that affect animals and their lifecycles.

Relationships and Acquaintances:
All animal and animal embryos that were brought with the colony were handpicked by Sylas. (I know this wasn't mentioned specifically but I'd assume any colonization would include animals. Who doesn't want some steak and eggs right? Also: I'd need to know what embryos and stasis animals would have survived.)

Remembers saying goodbye to @HeySeuss But HeySeuss has just started up an RP he once did long ago, perhaps with new surprises in store. Might join even though he is up to his eyeballs with responsibilities and other hobbies..

Sounds good. I think it's important to note that not all characters had to be hired as the top person...a lot of people died.

If you guys would like, we can start a Trello board as well as use the discord for brainstorming sessions. I feel that Trello is a step up from just putting things on a forum, because it allows for topics to be created and added, and comments made on these specific topics. It helps track lore generation.

This is an old favorite, but I brainstormed ideas in my little green notebook that led me to want to try this again. One of the nice things out there since the last time I tried this (more than two years ago) is that I am aware of new productivity software that helps with the brainstorming and that I know that this plot needs people to have a good idea of what direction we are taking it in.

So to fully disclose, Humanity has colonized since Aeneas' colonists disappeared. Then things happened to balkanized, fracture and otherwise devastate Humanity and they are crawling out of that, seeded on a variety of planets. Aeneas' colonists have to grapple with this situation and make decisions that have consequences. So some of the players have asked me (quietly, which is good) about certain political and scientific beliefs that I think bode well for the RP, because if these people are leading a colony and that colony is influential in ways they didn't expect and they learn things that they didn't even realize were possible, then the dissent will be fun to play out.

Furthermore, I want to be more collaborative in the GMing and work on the plot arc together. I have my ideas, but other people have plenty to bring to the table. That's why Trello -- you work on it, others see it, add to it, and spin off it.

So my role isn't to run the plot alone, it's to work with you guys and help create an atmosphere where we invest in our characters and the plotline as a whole, ditching the usual model of GM'ing. If we have twists, that's cool too. We should all be providing twists, because I like surprises and creativity as much as anyone else.

Character Sheet:
Name: Vera Ekliza
Gender: Female
Age: 28
Appearance:
A short, athletic woman of olive skin, brown eyes, and dark brown hair, Vera was always the type of girl that attracted attention walking into a room; sometimes out of physical attraction, other times just because her sharp features and uncommonly healthy body type made her stand out of the crowd. Only ever wears clothes that could be deemed as "useful" in a survivor scenario, like cargo pants and tough, pocketed shirts.

Bio:
Vera was born on March 18th, 2154, to Nikalos and Cassandra Ekliza, in Athens, Greece. Until the age of five, Vera had a fire in her eyes for archaeology, always looking for things buried in the ground and visiting old ruins in her city. Like most children, her interests changed over time, slowly shifting to technology and the environment. Her interests solidified in highschool as she focused most of her free time on environmental advocacy, becoming a well known, outspoken voice for the planet by the time she graduated at age 16 with flying colors. Shortly after, she was accepted into GSIU, the Global Science Initiative University, one of the top schools in her chosen field, civil engineering. Her focus was environmental engineering, which she achieved a PhD for in a mere 5 years, and went on to receive a masters in general civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and energy engineering, all while working at that same university as an environmental engineer.

During her first years at GSIU, she met a young man named Mark, and they fell in love. Vera proposed to Mark upon her final graduation day, when she was 26, and they set their wedding date for that summer. The next week they would take a plane to Greece to celebrate with the family, but the plane crashed in the middle of the ocean, leaving her stranded on a desert island with no other survivors, even her fiancé.

For months, her grief led her to contemplate ending her own life several times. She eventually found it within herself to push through these feelings, and using the skillsets she had acquired, she fashioned a working (albeit shoddy) sailboat with stores for food, a place to sleep, and ways of getting through storms undamaged; all with tools and materials she crafted with the resources she had available. She was determined to see her family again.

Two weeks on the sea and her boat was found by a cargo ship, out of food and unconscious. The crew of the ship brought her to land, where she became an international news piece. Her newfound fame, skillset, and resume attracted the attention of Voyager Industries, who made her an offer she couldn't refuse.

Psychological Profile:
Approval of colonization is satisfactory. No contempt for corporations or the company will prove useful. Political advocacy and general audacity may incite unrest, must keep close eye on environmental regulations, other political avenues will be overlooked. Intricate self-kept journal will provide useful data should subject become incapacitated. Scientific narrow-mindedness increases viability of subject manipulation. Fear of being stranded keeps subject in top physical shape, but is an easily accessed weakness of character.

Skillset/Occupation:
Vera is the overseer of the terraforming project, maintains environmental stability within habitat bubbles, and is the lead energy engineer.
-PhD Environmental Engineering
-Masters Mechanical Engineering
-Masters Civil Engineering
-Masters Energy Engineering
-Survival skillset and know-how
-Primitive first aid, tools, and weapons skillset
-Public speaking experience
-Fluent in Greek, English, German, and French.

Hello, the Guild is starting to get less stable and when these errors pop up, it usually means that it becomes unusable until mahz can get back.

Please login into this RP's Discord chat so we can stay in touch and, if necessary, pursue this RP on an alternative platform while the Guild has technical difficulties.
