Humanity 2.0"

If you are interested in joining,
Please PM me rather than posting a reply here.
A flurry of "I'm interested" replies
will make organizing the OOC more difficult.

Cast of Characters

Story Concept:
  • A devastating plague is sweeping across the planet.
  • 99% of mammalian life -- humans and otherwise -- will ultimately perish.
  • Where and how possible, humanity will rebuild.
  • In an isolated Wilderness Area in the Western United States, a group of survivors establishes a community that will come to be called New Hope.
  • Established as a place of peace and harmony, weapons are forbidden.
  • The philosophy of New Hope is that with the dramatic reduction in human population, New Hope will survive and thrive without the need for people to compete for what had once been but was not now limited space and resources. The thinking now is that there is no longer a need to harm -- let alone kill -- another person for one's needs.
  • Will this philosophy hold up, though -- will it seem naïve -- when militias and looting parties crop up in towns and cities all about New Hope, with some of them ultimately learning of the vulnerable community living undefended in the nearby mountains?

A little about myself and the writers for whom I seek:
  • I am looking for writing partners who are similar to me in writing habits (though being as anal and OCD is not a requirement).
  • I will reply for each of my active characters nearly every day.
  • I am not concerned about reply length: size doesn't matter, as the saying goes, just so long as replies move the story forward.
  • I perform spelling, grammar, and punctuation checks before I post. Mistakes are expected, but so is proofreading.
  • I despise "god moding" and "power plays".
  • Concerning sex scenes:
    • The Site's rules and limits on erotica must be obeyed.
    • Sexual interactions between adult characters can only be expected, therefore it will be part of our story.
    • However, this is not a sexual role play, therefore, graphic erotica is not to be written in the Main Thread.
    • When my (and your) characters do become involved in sexual situations:
      • I (and you) may "fade to black" those sex scenes, leaving the erotic details to the imagination of the reader.
      • Or write them as PG-13 or NC-17 in a separate thread which can be linked to this thread at the appropriate place in the time line.
      • I do not write graphic X-rated sex scenes, even in PM.

About my characters:
  • I will begin with 5 Primary Characters:
    • The Patriarch: he leads New Hope, which is located deep inside the Sisters Wilderness Area to the west of Bend, Oregon.
    • The Major: in Bend, he commands a ragtag group of mostly former military who will ultimately become the Militia that interacts with the Citizens of New Hope.
    • The Mountain Man: unsure of whether he is immune to the virus (as the other characters already know they are), he lives in a cabin in the woods where he survives by hunting, fishing, foraging, scavenging, and -- when necessary -- stealing.
    • The Arbitrator: as the community's judge in disputes between its Citizens, he is both an honored and respected Citizen of New Hope and a man with secrets he would prefer were not exposed.
    • And the Ill Fitting Piece: after falling in with the pacifist community through happenstance and making the trek to New Hope, he simply doesn't fit in with the community's pacifist nature.
  • These characters are being created to get the story established.
  • I will also write additional secondary characters as needed by my fellow writers to interact with their own characters.
  • While having a relatively large number of characters, though, I don't want to be the only writer telling a story here.
  • I am hoping that you all will role play with one another, too, rather than just with me.

Pace of the Role Play and Time Jumps:
  • A disagreement on pace is often a primary road block to getting writers to join a Group Role Play.
  • In an attempt to alleviate this road block, I am going to set the pace even before we start.
  • Our story begins in 2023, May to be more precise. (I selected 2023 because the days and dates of that year match those of 2017).
  • Initially, we will work as methodically as we can to reach a point where the role play calendar (of 2023) matches the day and date of the real world calendar (of 2017).
  • Then, once there, we will keep pace with the real world calendar.
  • Near the end of each real month, the role play calendar will reset to very near the end of the real month, but not of 2017 but of 2023. Clear...? :)
  • You and your writing partner(s) have ~30 real days to write ~30 days worth of role play interaction between your characters.
  • If, by coincidence, you write those 30 days in 30 days, wonderful!
  • If you are running out of time, you'll need to hurry up and finish your scene.
  • If you burn through the role play month in just a couple of real world weeks:
    • You can either let your characters go dormant until the time jump;
    • Or start the next role play month early so long as your rush does not affect the other characters;
    • Or -- if you are bored -- you can create some additional characters to keep yourself busy.
  • The time jumps won't be entirely rigid: sometimes we won't jump exactly to the end of a month or only to the end of the next month; and sometimes we will jump earlier in the month and other times later.
  • But we will jump, with an eye on both keeping the role play and real calendars close to one another and keeping all of the characters on the same pace.
  • You will just have to find a way to make this work for your character and his/her interactions.

Sergeant First Class Branton Briggs:

Physical Description:
  • 53 years old (as of 2023). (Born 1970.)
  • 5'10", 225#; fit and strong with a layer of winter fat.
  • Graying dark hair; beard.
  • Various tattoos, as of yet unexplained.

Psychological Description:
  • After a lifetime of hating his given name, he has gone exclusively by his surname throughout his adult years.
  • He is strong willed, determined, and confident.
  • He can become very violent very quickly if the need arises, and he seldom shows mercy to those who cross him.
  • He demands total loyalty from those serving him, and he shows total loyal to those who serve him well.
  • He doesn't say much, but when he does, people who know him well listen.
  • He is a bit of a misogynist in that he believes a woman's duty is to be laboring in the fields, in the kitchen, or in the bed.

Background:
  • 1970: Born.
  • His father was a career soldier. Briggs grew up on a succession of military bases across the world.
  • His father was a strict and conservative husband; his mother was an obedient wife who did what she was told, when she was told, how she was told lest she be punished. Briggs grew up believing that this was the way men and women interacted as couples, whether married or not.
  • 1988: Briggs entered the US Army the day he turned 18 (1 May 1970).
  • He had a troubled military career:
    • Although a great soldier, Briggs had problems with authority.
    • Unable to deal with taking orders from Officers who were younger and less experienced than he, Briggs was busted four times for insubordination over his 32 year career.
    • Often he was restored to his previous rank due to superior performance or heroic acts; while other times he simply had to work his way back up like any other hard working soldier.
  • 2018: As a Sergeant First Class (again!), Briggs became Chief Training Officer at a Special Forces Training School based in Washington State.
  • 2022:
    • Briggs's unit had been in Bend, Oregon, since May when the virus struck the state in mid-November. The Unit had been assigned to a National Guard Armory, instructing Guardsmen on winter warfare in preparation for deployment later that year to The Ukraine, where NATO was in a hot and active shooting war with Russian-backed separatists.
    • By Christmas, the plague has swept through the population of Bend, of most of the United States, and of much of the world. Bend's population was dropping rapidly, via death and flight; and funeral pyres burned in nearly every neighborhood day and night. Armed groups -- some giving themselves militia names -- were taking over and securing portions of the city: they scavenged and looted now abandoned homes and businesses; they secured bridges and highway bottlenecks to tax travelers of their possessions; and when necessary -- and sometimes even when not -- they killed, with their victims often being men, women, and children who had once been their own neighbors.
  • 2023:
    • By January, with both the Major and Master Sergeant of the Special Forces Unit now dead, Briggs was the most senior member left in the unit.
    • His unit was put under the direct command of the National Guard Unit's Captain, a true weekend warrior with no combat experience. Briggs knew immediately that this new assignment was not going to last.
    • By Valentines day, the population of Bend had dropped -- via disease, other deaths, and flight -- from over 90,000 to less than 2,000.
    • The various gangs and militias across Bend were in almost daily street battles with one another. The Captain was determined to bring calm to the city using his dwindling Guard Unit, but all he was doing was unnecessarily getting men hurt or killed.
    • By late March, the Guard Unit was down to just 18 men: 8 Special Forces (including Briggs), 6 original Guardsmen, and 4 new Guard recruits.
    • On 1 April 2023, Briggs new it was time for a change.

Elder (Aiden) Shaw: Patriarch of New Hope

Physical Description:
  • 66 years old as of 2023. (Born 1957.)
  • 5'8", 165#. Slight of frame; thin and fragile (from a decades long illness).
  • Graying dark hair; full beard.

Psychological Description:
  • Goes by the name Shaw, though most of the Citizens of New Hope call him Elder Shaw out of respect.
  • Lifelong pacifist.
  • Determined and dedicated; confident, sometimes overly so.
  • A caring, empathetic person.
  • Has been celibate for decades, not that he wouldn't take a lover if the right one came along.

Background:
  • 1957: Born.
  • Was a dedicated, socialist pacifist all his life.
  • Spent most of his teens and adult years on a succession of communes dedicated to simple and peaceful living.
  • Although he empathized with the protesters of many movements, he never participated in such civil disobedience.
  • 2022:
    • Shaw was an Elder on a commune near Sweet Home, Oregon, when the virus struck in mid-November.
    • Of the nearly 200 people living there, only 6 original residents remained alive by year's end.
    • The City of Sweet Home suffered a fate similar to that of the nearby commune, with the population of nearly 10,000 shrinking to just over 100.
    • However, the commune's promise of peace, goodwill, and harmony toward all drew plague survivors to it from both Sweet Home and other communities. The population there fluctuated between 20-60 over the weeks to come.
  • 2023:
    • By late-February, despite there being hundreds if not thousands of unoccupied homes, businesses, and other structures in and around Sweet Home that could be pillaged and looted likely without resistance, raiders had attacked the occupied commune three times.
    • Shaw -- now the commune's Patriarch -- began speaking of a new way of life, a simple existence without the trappings of technology ... and without the violence.
    • In the dark of night, Shaw lead 50 people away from Sweet Home, east into the Cascade Mountains, then south toward the Sisters Wilderness area. He had often vacationed in a small alpine valley that he hoped would be perfect for the establishment of a new community ... a place that would come to be called New Hope.

Thomas "Tommy" Kern: Citizen of New Hope

Physical Description:
  • 26 years old as of 2023. (Born 1997.)
  • 5'10", 175#. Fit, well sculpted; athletic.
  • Curly brunette hair; hazel eyes.
  • Clean cut: despite not needing to do so, he shaves almost every day.

Psychological Description:
  • Prefers Tommy over Tom or Thomas, but doesn't mind which is used.
  • Quiet, though he often appears as if he has a lot he'd like to say.
  • A caring, empathetic person, particularly with those who can't entirely care for -- or defend -- themselves.
  • He loves sex, but he keeps his interactions with others to himself. No PDAs.
  • He has a past he keeps hidden, but you don't get to know what that is yet. (IC replies will better reveal who and what he is over time, and those details will later be posted here. Stand by.)

Background:
  • 1997: Born.
  • Tom had a troubled upbringing, as alluded to above.
  • 2019:
    • At age 20, Tommy arrived in Sweet Home, Oregon.
    • He was quiet and reserved, but when he did open up to people even slightly, it was obvious that he was educated, knowledgeable, and worldly.
    • Despite seeming to be able to be more, Tommy took a common labor job at a local farm and garden shop, which often put him into contact with the commune on which Aiden Shaw was a member.
    • He occasionally took a lover for a night or a weekend -- mostly tourists or women from nearby cities who he knew had lives that would keep them at a distance more often than not -- but he never made a connection that might lead to having a girl friend.
  • 2022:
    • When the plague hit, Tommy had just learned that he had knocked up a young woman who lived on the commune. He had spent many hours sitting with Aiden Shaw talking about his future and a need for a change in his life.
    • Despite the woman falling victim to the virus -- and despite his concerns that he couldn't be what Aiden wanted him to become -- Tommy moved onto the commune and became closer to Aiden.
  • 2023:
    • When the commune was attacked, Tommy came to its defense. But Aiden demanded that Tommy take a pacifist stance toward outsiders. When the second attack came, Tommy inconspicuously took out a couple of the attackers; and when the third one came -- with Tommy in view of Aiden Shaw -- he resisted defending himself and his new community and simply allowed the attack to occur. Afterward, however, Tommy slipped off into Sweet Home and -- using an improvised incendiary device -- burned to the ground the building in which the attackers were holding up, killing at least 5 people.
    • Tommy didn't like this pacifist attitude, but he liked Shaw and the concept of the commune He promised he would swear off his violent ways and -- in May -- helped lead the communes' Citizens to New Hope.

Paul Timbers: Outdoorsman

Physical Description:
  • 36 years old as of 2023. (Born 1987.)
  • 5'11", 195#. Fit, well sculpted though with a light layer of winter fat, too; very athletic and strong with great endurance.
  • Short brunette hair that is slightly graying; more often than not unkempt. Deep green eyes.
  • Shaves maybe twice a month, unless he thinks he's about to get lucky and doesn't want the stubble causing irritation down there.

Psychological Description:
  • Quiet until he gets to know you.
  • He's not selfish, though he is self-serving, meaning that he won't hesitate to help others but will almost always gain something personal as part of the act.
  • Protective of innocent people for whom he cares. But since he doesn't like to put himself out for those he doesn't know well, he simply keeps to himself when he can.
  • He loves sex and doesn't often get too particular about with whom he has it.
  • He doesn't know whether he is immune to the virus, so he has hidden himself away in the woods away from others.

Background:
  • 1987: Born.
    • Grew up a country boy and outdoorsman.
    • He did a lot of jobs during his teens and young adult years, but as the beginning of our tale approached, Paul's primary source of income had come from being a fishing and hunting guide, a living he'd supplemented with hunting and foraging for himself.
    • More to come on this in the IC replies.
  • 2022:
    • He had lived west of Bend, Oregon, for most of his adult life when the plague hit.
    • Fearful of not being immune to the virus, Paul hid away in his cabin in the Cascades on the fringe of the Sisters Wilderness Area.
  • 2023:
    • Paul has continued to simply hide out and live off what Mother Nature provides, which -- with the plague killing off the mammals that had once been a big part of his diet -- is less than it once was.
    • He has on occasion had to run off people who have wandered upon the property.
    • He had also dealt with those who refused to be run off in other ways.

Elder Paul Stone: Arbitrator of New Hope

Physical Description:
  • 58 years old as of 2023. (Born 1965.)
  • 5'8", 185#. Fit, though no male model.
  • Graying hair; always clean cut.

Psychological Description:
  • Though he tries to hide it, he's self centered, self absorbed, and -- at time -- selfish.
  • But he puts out enough of an empathetic vibe to earn the respect of the other New Hope Citizens.
  • Very intelligent, with above average common sense.
  • Never acts rash. Always contemplates his actions and words.
  • Womanizer who likes very young women, even those considered jail bait by modern legal standards. (Women are his greatest weakness.)

Background:
  • 1965: Born to a well to do east coast family.
  • 1970s-80s: Went to the best private schools, including Harvard where he received a law degree.
  • 1990s-2010s: Spent a decade as a prosecutor back east, then another as a defense lawyer out west, then finally became a County Judge in Oregon. (Each shift in career was a direct or indirect result of a sexual scandal that was kept silence with the application of an appropriate and undisclosed amount of cash.)
  • Paul came into contact with Aiden Shaw after the Sweet Home commune ran into some legal issues concerning a neighboring property owner.
  • He liked the commune's philosophy, but really liked the more sexually liberal women who lived on it.
  • He offered the commune and its Citizens his services as a lawyer, arbitrator, mediator, and advisor concerning cases within and without the Commune; and soon Paul was spending a great deal of time on the property, including overnight stays in some of the thankful female's beds. (Aiden is no idiot, and he knew that Paul was fucking his way through the young, attractive, energetic female population. But as no harm seemed to be occurring and the ladies really liked him, he let it happen.)
  • 2022:
    • When the virus struck, Paul isolated himself on his own property, fearful of dying.
    • By December, he'd been exposed and come to realize he was immune.
  • 2023:
    • Still in contact with Aiden Shaw (and two of the commune's surviving females), Paul learned of the intention of moving into the mountains. Despite not being the roughing it type, he asked to go and was warmly welcomed.
    • He traded his $1.5 million dollar estate to a growing militia for a pair of (fully outfitted) llamas that had survived the plague, packed them with his most vital possessions, and joined Shaw for the trek to New Hope.

Be aware that the links do not operate the way they should. I will dink around with them later today to figure out what's wrong, but it might be a site issue and out of my control.
