Hi Tabletop community, I'm totally new here, this is probably my first post in this sub-forum.

Long story short, I want to to try and turn one of my established ideas into a Tabletop RP for a more robust and enjoyable combat system. As far as lore/backstory goes, I have it already right here: Sky Warriors Extended Universe

I have no concrete plot in mind for this particular TTRP but I was going to base it in that universe so I'm absolutely open to plot and narrative ideas.

I'm not completely green to tabletop mechanics, I was raised on fighting fantasy books, probably spent a year or two playing Warhammer Fantasy casually and have dabbled with the odd game of D&D but I have no idea on common ettiquette, jargon, or playstyles for tabletop on the guild, so any pointers or help would be appreciated.

Hope to hear from you soon pilots!

Honestly, if you're looking to run an aerial combat game with tabletop rules...I think you'll find running them on a forum very difficult. The two main rule sets that come to my mind (Imperial Aeronautica, and Fantasy Flight Games' X-Wing rule set). I know D&D has a few air combat rules for D20 Modern and D20 Future, but they're kind of clunky. I think there's also a few, more contemporarily set tabletop rule sets (Blue Max for WWI, Wings of Glory or Dogfight for WWI/WWII rules...also Birds of Prey for anything modern).

Sadly a lot of these games are hex-based and card-based, and not the most reliant upon dice or other internet-friendly mechanics, from what I've seen.

Since you seem to be running a homebrew ruleset maybe a summary/once-over for your rules would be useful so we can see how/if it's a system that's actually easily convertible to an internet setting?

@JDolan Thanks very much for that summary, can I ask what homebrew means? I've seen it used in some titles.

@Dynamo Frokane Basically custom-built rules. Making your own game, as it were from the ground up, or modifying an existing set of rules for your purposes.

Okay lets try that then, I have some ideas on how I would like the combat to function with dice rolls and the like, whats the best place to start?

Well, the best place to start is to get your hands on the rule sets for those games I outlined - also the Battletech rules for Aerospace. Read through them. Understand them. Then start fiddling and building stuff up to your liking.
