PERSONA - ACADEMIC AKRASIA

"The persona is a kind of mask, designed on the one hand to make a definite impression upon others, and on the other to conceal the true nature of the individual"
- Carl Jung, Two Essays on Analytical Psychology.

April 15, 2016

A simple test; can you state your name?

The sun had begun its descent, setting the sky ablaze with hues of orange and red. Chocolate brown eyes glazed over at the sight, their owner clearly unaffected by the beautiful canvas separated from him by only a classroom window. He sighed, resting his head against a single palm, his elbow pressing down into the wood of his desk. Here he was at school so late in the evening, waiting for the arrival of the mysterious figure that had requested his presence.

He glanced down at the note, the one that he had discovered in his shoe locker mere hours before. It had been almost a cliché, a happenstance that would not have found itself out of place in some shoujo manga. Yet here he was, the proud owner of a note telling him to wait in a second-year classroom, waiting.

It was a neat scrawl, almost mechanical. Their mastery of hiragana was beyond his, no doubt.

Come to class 2-A.

But it didn’t make it any less frustrating. He released another deep breath, closing his eyes and soaking in the metallic scent of the room. He was tired. He didn’t want to be here. He could so easily just stand up and exit through the door. He could so easily return home and cook himself dinner. Except he was still at school.

Waiting for someone who might not come.

He released a long sigh, cradling his head within his arms. How long could he wait?

There aren't many who can remember their identity when in this domain.

It was nearly nightfall. He blinked in surprise. Time had passed more quickly than he had expected, and it was clear from the yawn he was now attempting to hold in that it would be for the best that he head home.

And nobody had arrived.

He shook his head. He had been a fool to wait so long.

The chair creaked back against the wooden floorboards, and he stood up. There was no point in staying so late, especially when he had other things to deal with at home. To have been so gullible to have fallen for such a haphazardly written letter ... he only had himself to blame for this mistake. It was as if he was one of those children who believed that there were ghosts who would roam the hallways and classrooms at night. Absolute poppycock. He had yet to see any shred of evidence.

And as student council president, he had access to all of it.

The lights blinked, crackling with energy.

Once.

Twice.

He started screaming.

~~~ Welcome ~~~
Hey there folks. With the worldwide release of Persona 5 having occurred this week and all, I decided to dust off an old thing of mine and reboot Persona: Academic Akrasia. In this RPG, you get play as a student at Uchima (内魔) Senior High (student population of approximately 350) in the Japanese city of Shikatsu. As one of those attending this institution, you have most likely heard rumours of your fellows disappearing into thin air, vanishing between one day and the next without anyone the wiser. In fact, you might have even heard rumours of monsters stalking the hallways at night, or of crazy dreams involving copious amounts of blue velvet. Maybe you didn’t pay heed to those rumours, except just last week, the student council president, praise be to his bishounen glory, was discovered missing, with absolutely nobody knowing where he went.
And a number of you have been getting strange dreams. Real strange ones. Maybe there was a guy wearing a mask in them. Maybe there were butterflies. Maybe you couldn’t remember your name, maybe you could.
Maybe you were already having these dreams, but this last week has been sending them into overdrive.
Maybe, just maybe, you even saw a ghost materialise before you. Even temporarily. Maybe.
Strange dreams, strange phantoms, strange disappearances, and for some strange reason, they’ve begun to plague this beloved (or less than beloved) school of yours. And some people even say that there might even be cover-ups going on, cover-ups that are attracting the attentions of less than savoury forces.
Has there been stuff leaking out into the rest of the city?
Something’s rotten in the state of Denmark, and it's your job to get to the bottom of this mystery.
~~~ Skill System ~~~

Given the variety of skill categories in the Persona franchise, this game has settled on the following system:

Magical Skills
The number of differing magic types capable of being utilised is significant, consisting of not only the major four basic elements of the later games (Fire, Wind, Ice, Electricity) as well as Light and Dark (the Bless and Curse of Persona 5), but also the slightly rarer magics (Earth, Water, Psychokinesis, Nuclear) and the "non-elemental" Almighty spells (which here will include the Blast/Force spells such as Zan and the Gravity spells like Gry). There are also the Ailment spells, which can inflict either physiological statuses (such as Sleep or Dizziness) or mental statuses (such as Berserk or Confusion).

Physical Skills
The resistances of enemies faced in this game, and the special Persona skills of the physical persuasion, will differentiate between the ways they are affected by kinetic impacts. In here, there are four categories to keep in mind: Slash (dealt by slashing weapons), Pierce (when the force is concentrated on the small area, such as with spears or arrows), Strike (for all blunt kinetic attacks) and Gun (which will take into account the damage done by firearms). It will not be particularly difficult to encounter the first three, but the last may play a role at some point too.

Other Skills
There are the Support Skills, which include the healing spells (which also include the status recovery and revival skills) and the large range of "buffing" skills (raising speed, strength or defences; the immunity skills), all of which tend to be used on allies or the like. Then there are Passive Skills, which represent the physical traits of the Persona or how they act in battle(such as Counter). Finally, there are the spells that don't fit in any defined category, such as Traesto (which teleports characters to the start of 'dungeons') or Estoma (a spell that wards away enemies).

~~~ General Rules ~~~
  • Follow Guild rules. This should probably be a given.
  • No meta-gaming, bunnying or god-modding.
  • Keep your beef somewhere private. If you don’t like somebody, yeah, I can’t stop you from doing that, but talk to them through PMs and whatnot rather than filling the OOC with drama. This also applies to IC posts. Keep your beef out of your character interactions.
  • GM gets final say, although I am willing to talk decisions over.
  • Try and enjoy yourselves.
@CrimmyHaving DM'd a Persona RP previously for several years (based around P4's system), I have some interest here. A few questions before I commit, however:
1) What sort of combat system can we expect? Will it be freeform, or will you structure it closer to a turn-based system like in the games? Either way, will all or many of the iconic mechanics from Persona 5 remain, such as One More, Hold Up, Baton Toss (or whatever it's called), etc?
2) How many PCs do you expect to run? Our game had 20 PCs (one for each Arcana except Judgment and World), and it got fairly convoluted at times. I would suspect you plan to have a smaller group, but is there a cap?
3) As I mentioned, I ran an RP on Persona, and I structured the combat to feel as close to P4's as possible. I have a (rather complicated) spreadsheet that works for P4's mechanics. If you need resources for running combat, let me know. The sheet would require some work to convert it to P5 mechanics (specifically for physical elements, the new status effect names, and new abilities/elements). However, it's definitely a strong start since the core mechanics have not significantly changed that much since P4.
With that said, I have two fully-developed PCs. One is a Chariot Arcana (Persona = Eligor) spear-wielding trenchcoat-wearing lovable oaf named Ryobi Ito who plays basketball and is dealing with a single mom on the edge of poverty. The other is a Hanged Man Arcana (Persona = Yatsufusa) miko named Kimiko Maita who wields a katana and loves singing and has a super-religious overbearing father.
EDIT: I see you already have a Chariot. I can switch Ryobi to Strength fairly easily, as his story also revolves around personal internal Strength. I would just have to modify his Persona, possibly to Oni.
1) Fighting's definitely going to be more freeform; I don't tend to try and implement the actual game mechanics in a text form that much, so for example, "One More" would be less "enemy was weak to that Zio you chucked, go again!" and more "enemy got downed because of its weakness to electricity, take advantage of that and hit again!". Probably not going to have something based around the "Hold Up" mechanic given that it's contextually more Persona 5. "Baton Pass" is a bit too mechanical to be put in a freeform system.
2) Write and I would be lucky to fill the entirety of the Major Arcana, ahaha, but group size isn't one of the big issues. In the last iteration I did split the party up into dealing with two halves of the plot, so we could probably do that again if it does get into too much of an issue. Have players handle separate goals which could contribute to the progression of the game.
3) That actually sounds pretty interesting, although right now I'm not really in need of any major resources. If things do need a bit extra, I'll thankfully take you up on that offer. Although you'd might have to adjust it for the mishmash of Persona 1 and 2 elements with the later games.
On your PCs, both seem like they would be pretty interesting to see interact with the others (although personally, I'm biased towards seeing how Kimiko functions, given that @Plank Sinatra is likely also using his Kimiko character, so the contrast between the two Kimikos might be fun.)
I will point out that in no Persona game to memory has every Arcana been held by a playable character. Many of the cards have been given to supporting characters such as NPCs with close ties to the story, NPCs with close ties to NPCs with close ties to the story, or just interesting shop keeps.
@chukklehedVery true, although that might partially be due to the amount of resources that requires. Also, unless every ally progressed at the same pace, having that many combatants leads to you only training up a handful anyways. In an RP, you're more able to be flexible with said resources. Unfortunately, our story was directly tied to having exactly 20 PCs at all times. Made a lot of things fairly difficult to work with, but we got a lot of really intriguing characters.
@Crimmy How many more PCs do you expect? I don't want to take up slots that are already intended for someone else. I can toss you a link to that spreadsheet if you want at any time, just send me a PM. Also, do you have a Discord channel or Skype group set up for the RP? Is that something that would interest you?
A total of twelve people expressed interest. No clue if more people will join up. Strength was reserved by @Krayzikk in the initial Interest Check, which I forgot to mention. Finally got around to mentioning which Arcana were reserved in the first Char tab.
Don't have a Discord or Skype group set up, although if the players are up for it I'd go for it.
Peeking in here real quick. If there are arcana still open, I'll whip up a character sheet... as soon as I stop playing P5, which has taken over my life.
Edit - would love to reserve Justice if possible!
