Two of the most recently released movies that I've really liked are Get Out and Split.

La La Land, Hacksaw Ridge, The Accountant, Kubo, Star Trek Beyond, Swiss Army Man, 10 Cloverfield Lane, The Revenant, The Hateful Eight, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, The Martian, Sicario, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Dope, Mad Max: Fury Road, Kingsman, Interstellar, Nightcrawler, John Wick, Fury, Gone Girl, Edge of Tomorrow, The Winter Soldier.

Those are the ones that stand out looking at this list of major releases that goes back to 2014.

EDIT: Some other recent ones I missed: Room, Ex Machina, It Follows, The Imitation Game, Birdman, Enemy, The Grand Budapest Hotel.

WHILE I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION

Legion is a fucking sweet series. Stranger Things was clearly the best of 2016. And finally, I thoroughly enjoy Rick and Morty, despite how many normie fans they have and all of the cringey ways they show their love for it.

These are the most egregious.

Dude, GotG 2 was disappointing.

They just turned it into The fucking Three Stooges, basically.

At the risk of sounding pompous, I'll say that most of the jokes were just simple and dumb.

I haven't seen it but I kind of expected it to be shit. Marvel just loves their jokes, I guess.

DC is shit, too, though.

Oh well, I'll keep going to some of those movies anyway.

(IMO) Fury road, was incredibly shallow, a completely drag with a 2 hour length (yet completely plotless.) That seemed overly praised for solely shallow political reasons. It gave you no context or reason to care about any of the characters, you didn't know anyone's name and it was quite boring to sit through, a lot of scenes just had nothing happening in it. My roommate who goaded me into seeing it in the first place actually hated it more than I did. And I'm not the only one that felt that way. Ironically the IMBD is like at an 8. Yet all the top rated reviews say that the movie is bad...

Well the problem is, a lot of this I've "given a chance" that were well received, or at least said they weren't so bad. Ended up being pretty god awful. Insidious used to be like a 7 or 8 on IMDB. (This movie is a god awful piece of shit. Also my roommate will never let me live it down that we sat in theaters to see it.) Same with things like the "The Visit" or "Unfriended" and you'd be shocked how praised those were if you were unfortunate enough to sit down and watch them.

I'm not necessary writing them off blindly. It's usually several close friends, who I share a connection with (and usually a similar taste.) It's not a mere outlier. Like I saw a random youtube comment. I don't usually go out of my way to see movies period, it's not really one of my top priorities. Some of them spoiled the whole when they saw the movie, and I can tell I would have probably hated Gone Girl without needing to see it myself. :/

I haven't been spoiled to The Revenant's plot. Barely know anything about it aside from my family mocking a bear scene. If you think I'd enjoy it, on the limited knowledge of what you know I like or dislike. I dunno, convince me to see the movie otherwise. Maybe I'll watch it. :P

@SleepingSilence You have an issue with assuming why things are liked by others. Liking Fury Road has nothing to do with any political reasons.

IMO, people who don't like Fury Road suffer from some combination of the following: lack of appreciation for visual storytelling, inability to cope with low amounts of dialogue, inability to appreciate specialized (and not generalized) movies, lack of appreciation for grade AAA action, inability to recognize grade AAA action, watched it with bad audio and/or visual setup.

EDIT: Not gonna try very hard to convince you to see The Revenant. I'll say that it's probably the hardest for someone to dislike out of my list up there. As long as that person is okay with outdoorsy, survival movies.

@Awson Didn't say you did, nor was that what I attempted to imply. I said some people/critics did. And it's not "an assumption" it's the thing they praise highly in their reviews. :/

It was a video game, not a movie and honestly it's a little silly to point out how people can have the audacity to assume why people -liked- a movie. Then in the very next breathe explain why people -didn't- like the movie.

I saw it in theaters, it still sucked and bored me and my roommate to tears. It just wasn't a well made movie in my opinion...it was a lot of shallow visuals, that got stale because of repetition and no actual substance. Characters made constant stupid decisions and didn't grow or have any arcs, the story didn't have clear rules and had several continuity errors.

The Grey was a "survival, outdoorsy movie" and it kind of sucked. So that doesn't say a whole lot really. If that's really all it has going for it. :/

@SleepingSilence First part is still bullshit. I don't know what you're reading.

I don't have much to say about the hypocrisy bit. I'll just say that my part comes from a place of knowing what I liked, and speculating how people might not have seen it the same way. While you're speculating from less.

Everything you're saying against Fury Road has done nothing aside from dispelling the last item on my list.

No, that isn't all The Revenant has going for it. All I was saying is that having a predisposed dislike for movies set in the outdoors or stories about surviving in nature would be the only reason I can think of for someone disliking The Revenant. The comparison to The Grey is nonsense. Finding The Grey to be bad shouldn't spoil the genre.

With all of that being said, I have one last point. I may be wrong about all of this. You may be wrong about all of this. Having a circle of like-minded people feel the same way about something doesn't mean that those feelings are any more substantiated in the big picture. You seem to be leaning on the opinions of those around you to support your arguments. It's entirely possible that everyone you know is a pleb.

>it's a movie, it's art, it's all subjective

I slightly disagree, but that's a whole other can of worms.

@Awson Do I have to like show you evidence that your wrong? It wouldn't be hard.

nypost.com/2015/05/14/why-mad-max-fur…

bustle.com/articles/82751-mad-max-is-…

buzzfeed.com/lauriepenny/the-fast-and…

Bullshit eh? Want more? I have it...It doesn't even -have- to be true. The fact, (the FACT) is a ton of people did like it solely for what they saw as a political message. :/

Once again, it's not calling you out. You don't need to take it so personal.

All I did was point out why people liked it, (a true statement) and why I didn't like it. What you did, was assume people that didn't like it, was somehow related to the quality of the television they watched it on. (Which aside from being just absurd.) It also (unlike my comment.) Doesn't have articles talking about how they don't appreciate "limited dialogue" to back it up. People didn't like the fact the only real dialogue that did exist, was trite and pointless chatter about some unexplained kind of redemption. My speculation is actually backed up and isn't baseless.

It's not nonsense, if that's all you gave to me to go on. It's your limited information that had me bring up that movie. You can't tell me some extremely vague concept is the only way someone can dislike something. People's tastes are usually far more complicated than you seem to believe. And then judge me for bringing up something that is EXACTLY what you described. Sure, it's completely different. But if "I can't understand why anyone would hate Sin City unless they don't likes black and white movies." I could bring up an unrelated black and white movie, that may have nothing to do with the topic at hand, but it certainly isn't my fault. :/ "Outdoorsy movies" isn't a genre anyway...so just saying "movies spent mostly in the outdoors" well that doesn't help in the slightest...that could mean "127 hours." to the "Blair Witch Project."

Yeah, I think I can debunk the statement of "you surround yourself with people that have the same taste" because one of my best friends I spend the most time with disregarding the one I live with, has taste that is nearly 100% different from mine. And my family has plenty of differences in taste as well. I don't purposefully try to surround myself with circle jerk bandwagons. Though you are correct, doing that makes you a fool and will likely give you no benefits in the future. But I have been a target of bandwagons, far more than I have joined a bandwagon. :/ I think it's ALSO a little silly on top of that. To mention, "It seems like you're joining a consensus made by other people, don't you know how bad that is?" when mere moments ago you pointed out. "Why dislike something when the general feeling of many people thought it was good?"

>writing off several other generally well received movies because an outlier told you it was terrible

Having a circle of like-minded people feel the same way about something doesn't mean that those feelings are any more substantiated in the big picture.

Lots and lots of contradictions I'm seeing here, is all I'm saying.

>it's a movie, it's art, it's all subjective

I slightly disagree, but that's a whole other can of worms.

I'm not exactly sure if this is still addressing me. But yeah I think attempting to point out "why your opinion is 100% wrong and my opinion isn't an opinion but fact because..." Probably won't make it that far on the cutting room floor, so to speak.

You can like/love the movie, it doesn't mean you liked it for the same reasons I described. (or because you're televison had better speakers. <.<) And I'm not saying you're worse or better than anyone for that opinion. :/
