"Further out you get, the greater the chance to get a strike."

He starts reeling the lure in and popping it, making a loud splash on the surface of the water, He continues reeling and popping for a good distance before a fish leaps out of the water grabbing it.

"Fish on!"

He says, fighting the fish. He easily powers it in and lifts it out of the water.

"Small mouth bass. Not season yet, opens on may 28th."

He removes the hook and holds up the 14 inch fish.

"Barely legal too. Gotta be 14 to keep."

He tosses it back in and looks at her.

"You ready to try it now?"

"Sure."

Ele said, going to stand by Tyler, ready to take the rod from him. Trying to hold back a smile, Ele blushed and chuckled,

"I just thought of something dirty..."

She said with a teasing smirk up at Tyler. Moving to stand in front of him, Ele nodded,

"Okay, show,me what to do."

"That little wire thing on top of the reel flips up. You hold the line in place when you flip it up. Crank back with while still holding the line and whip it forward, letting go of the line as you are casting it. After it flies out and lands, flip the wire back down and reel it in tight. It is called a hula popper cuz it has a little skirt on it. You reel it in a little and lightly jerk the rod once or twice cuz it creates a thump under water. Reel it in again a couple turns then repeat the popping process."

He grabs her waist and steadies himself and the boat in the process.

Doing as Tyler said, Ele held the line and flicked the rod, sending the lure and line flying through the air. It landed far short of Tyler's original cast, but Ele felt good at being able to doing something the first time,

"And now just like this?"

She asked, flicking the rod every couple of seconds and reeling in slowly.

"Just like that. That lure is good for bass, lake trout, walleye, pike and muskie. They will all explode on it, but with bass and lake trout you might need to set the hook, the last 3 almost guaranteed they will pound on it hard enough to set the hook on themselves."

He says grabbing out a mountain dew.

Ele took a seat and slowly reeled in the lure. When she didn't catch anything the first time, she recast and repeated the process,

"So when do you want to come with me to the city?"

She asked, looking at Tyler,

"We can get a great hotel, and can be real tourists."

He says just drinking his pop.

Ele said, musing over where they would stay. Casting out again, Ele thought about timing,

"Well when can you take off work, and for how long? And do we want to do it before we start looking into the new shop?"

"I can take a vacation at any time. My buddy Tim actually does the paperwork for the business. I would have to schedule the vacation 2 weeks ahead of time but I think we could do it before we open the new shop."

He takes another drink.

"I still need to get an rv. Might just buy a bus and convert that to an rv. Though I could just as easily use the mini van as the camper but it would be nice to be able to move around."

"6 months sounds good."

He looks over at the lure seeing her snap to attention.

"Keep reeling and twitching the line. Maybe pick up the speed a little."

Biting her lip, Ele did as Tyler said when the rod was jerked almost from her hands.

"Woah!"

Gripping the rod tighter, Ele yanked back and started to reel in the slack. The pole was severely bent, but straightened out again and Ele almost lost her grip.

Ele reeled for what felt like an eternity, trying to pull the fish in every as her arms felt like they would turn to noodles.

"I'm gonna be so pissed if this thing isn't the size of the Loch Ness monster! I will not spend this much energy fighting Nemo!"

She gasped, the fish finally emerging from the water.

Putting his gloves on he drags the behemoth near 4 foot long trout into the boat with a grunt.

"Good lord, I gotta get a recording of this."

He says, grabbing a scale.

"Michigan record on this beast is like 61 or 62 pounds, you gotta be pushing that."

Getting the scale out he clips the hook over its bottom jaw and lifts his arm trying to get a read on it. He looks at her and shakes his head.

"I don't if this setup we are running will qualify for a record but I gotta put in a call to the DNR right now."

He pulls out his phone, getting a decent signal. He calls them up then puts it on a stringer and lets it out into the water tying it to the boat.

"This isn't a state record but it could be a tackle record."

Once the fish was in the boat, Ele flopped back onto the floor and gasped as she rubbed feeling back into her shaking arms. The fish was certainly a beast, and Tyler seemed excited at what they had,

"A tackle record? Is that a big deal?"

"Yes, it means while it is not an official heaviest or longest fish it means that for the strength of the line you may have caught the heaviest for that line strength. Like the state record is 61 pounds 8 ounces, lets say it was caught on 24 pound test line. We have like a 58 pound fish and we caught it on 16 pound test. You brought in a fish slightly smaller with much weaker fishing line."

He looks over at the fish.

"If it is recognized, you will be immortalized."

Suddenly he gets a look in his eye and says.

"Hey, you could potentially have a state record still. They have state records for men, women and children under 10 10 to 14 and 14-17. We gotta see."

"That's frickin' crazy..."

Ele gasped, laying down. That one fish had exhausted her,

"Okay, I can say I'm an awesome fisherwoman now! Even if it's not a record, it's almost as long as I am tall, so that's a record in my book."
