I really want one, but to be honest I've never seen one function before.

If anything it'd just be set within the world with only gods and such being canon. Certainly before the new age with Guthix dead and such.

I don't want to put too much into this without any chance of people joining.

Probably make it some sort or Hero's or Legend's guild quest gathering people from multiple fields of experience and backgrounds for an expedition of some sort? Maybe a mission involving a Mahjarrat? Zemouregal being a prime candidate.

I personally think RuneScape's lore is terrible and unworthy of an RP adaptation, but the real problem with your idea is mechanical: most people stopped playing RuneScape a very long time ago, either because they grew up, or (as in my case) because the new management drove the game into the ground with half-baked content, microtransactions, etc. Some people played a while, but eventually grew bored and quit. Others were F2P, or simply didn't like the game, and didn't explore very much of it before dropping out.

I would assume that JaGeX has added only more content since then, so anyone who's hypothetically interested in this RP must be a current RuneScape player in order to understand the lore.

Maybe design your own setting which is "based on" RuneScape instead of using its canon directly. Then the players will only need the information which you divulge to them in the thread. This ought to help with recruitment, since it won't demand of the players that they know lore from a game which they may have stopped playing half a decade ago.

I appreciate your input but honestly RS has some decent lore, even if it's a bit generic. The books are pretty good, at least as good as World of Warcraft's adaptations, and there's plenty worthy of RP adaptation. (though to be fair, literally anything is worthy.) There's also the fact that quite often, people join RPs without really knowing the deeper lore past what's stated in the OOC.

I will agree with you on one thing though, outside of the insanely high level stuff (which is where all of the lore is stuffed), they haven't been doing anything great for the game. Truthfully I probably wouldn't try making anything around the time of Guthix's death, all of the gods being active in the world would be less than easy to work with.

(creating any RP that requires a lot of knowledge in a fandom is dangerous regardless, so anything that wouldn't be explainable through the first OOC and interest check will probably be ignored)
