Artist in training who specializes in people and landscapes (though portraits make up the bulk of my work) and I basically spend far too much time drawing my characters.
I can draw yours as well. For more information on that, please follow this link to my Deviantart: virtuxa.deviantart.com/journal/Commis…
I'm afraid I don't do requests for free.

Anyway, now that we're done with the sales pitch, let's get to the actual artwork:

Any price estimates available? How much for two characters walking side-by-side in the same image? Specifically in full or 3/4 body?

Whether there's background/scenery, and how much detail you'd use, will depend on prices of course, but I know that I'd want both portraits in the same piece.

@Piddle Similar to Pugbutter, I might be interested in two portraits of different characters, but it'll depend specifically on the price.

My list of prices can be found on through the link in the first post. I'll make an image version of it soon, so that you won't need to be linked to DeviantArt, but for now everything can be found there. In my gallery there is also a commission that was a 'medium' size and that's probably a good comparison with my higher res pieces in terms of what the difference would be if I go for smaller and a little less detail.

I go by canvas-size instead of amount of characters, but it boils down to; the more you want in a drawing (for example; full body instead of a portrait, a background instead of a simple gradient) the larger the canvas will probably need to be for it to look good, which in turn means I spend more time on it and charge more for it.
Anything with the level of detail that the pieces I've shown here would be between 30 and 40 dollars.

@Piddle Thanks for the reply. I saw your B&W in the Discord and it looks pretty great, so I'll probably end up going with that. Definitely reduced to a single character, too, instead of two in a scene, but as for color vs. B&W, I'm not sure yet.

How are you with uniforms, and military stuff in general? I'd love for it to be a prince's military portrait, where he's decked out in his armor, his coat-of-arms, a painting's frame/border, that sort of thing, so I could present it to someone as a formal gift.

(for reference something like this)

@Pugbutter Thanks! The B&W is going to be colored, by the way; it's just easier for me to adjust things while in greyscale. However, a B&W as an end product is also definitely possible, or maybe something with very minimal coloring.

Uniforms and military gear: I'll have to have proper reference, since I'm not very well-versed in military history myself and might use the wrong pictures as reference if I just look something up, but with the right reference it should be pretty doable.
I've done a few armors before, so while I'd definitely do a few more quick metal studies first to get back into it some more, I don't think it'd be a problem.

Just to make sure I understand correctly; you're talking about a digital piece, but with a border drawn around it, right?

@Piddle Yeah. I'm sure he can get it printed if he likes it that much, even if having you send it to him in an actual frame would be metal af.

The pic I linked is not too far from what I'll want in the end: black and gold armor with a late-Transitional style, meaning chains and brigandine under a layer of plate. On top, some sort of tabard or surcoat for displaying his heraldry. (I'd give you a rough mock-up of his house's escutcheon: red, white, and green being the dominant colors. But I'm definitely not a visual artist, as you will see lmao.) The background would be rather plain in the style of these old portraits, but there might be some accessories/decorations to one side like shields, tables and tablecloths, bundles of spears.

example of a finished product, though from a much later period (17th Century)

With all of that said, I think I'll settle on colored digital. Thoughts, apprehensions, questions? Definitely feel free to do your studies if you need time, and when you're ready, get in touch with me so I can send a proper character description whenever.

Wow. As someone who has bought a lot of commissions in the past, I gotta say you could be charging twice as much and still be cheaper than the quality you put out. Nice artwork! I don't have a direct need at the time, but I'll be sure to keep you in mind when I do!

@pugbutter Have to say it's definitely something I'd love to do. But I do think I want to do a few studies first. Both metal and folds have not gotten the attention they deserve in the past few weeks.
In a few weeks my current schoolyear's over, so during the holidays I'll certainly have plenty of time for a commission like this.
I'll PM you then, alright?

@JBRam2002 That is a very big compliment, thank you! I have to admit that having the confidence to charge more for my work is still a tough thing.
And glad to hear that!

@Drazah Very glad to hear that!
