Similarly, I'm also game for whatever.

(Also, hi Mokley, I'm invading another one of your RPs. :p)

@MokleyYeah.

I actually made a microscope RP once so I already know what to expect unless you are making special forum rules.

@Tojin Hey hi yay! :D

If we're gonna do the conversion thing, the first step is to figure out the start point and end point of our timeline, and have a sentence that describes that span of time.

So far the start point seems to be an age of gods and upheval (dark), and the end point is probably the rise of techno-magic (light ... maybe).

Maybe the timeline we're writing now is the fall of the Ruse? People used to live in fear and submission to the gods of their own creation, but as understanding grows the Ruse are gradually made to submit to humanity?

Or perhaps the Ruse are destroyed completely, somehow? People may have decided that the Ruse are collectively too dangerous to be allowed to exist and vanquished them. Though since the Ruse are born of people's imaginations, I'm not sure what that implies.

That could get really dystopian really fast. I kinda like it.

Edit: That's Loris City, actually! Only on a grand scale. If this happens, it'd start there.

Since the Ruse are so integral to the setting I agree that it would fitting to have their demise mark the end of the timeline.

I was actually already looking at the history of this world as progressing from submission to domination of the ruse, so its a great fit. I suggest the startpoint is specifically the birth of the first cities.

I also am game for using microscope rules. There are a few things I don't like about our existing content, mainly that some of it is disconnected from everything else and it lacks thematic unity. I don't think we should just wipe it all away though. Maybe one thing we can do is require that people go heavy on the whimsical/folklore aspect of their contributions going forward?

I've started a timeline! Check out the Characters tab -- a few articles have been plugged into periods and events to establish where things are going, but are definitely up for discussion.

If this looks good to you guys and we should continue sorting the articles into the timeline, I may need a bit of help, haha. Lemme know if you're interested in helping to edit the timeline, and I'll promote you to co-GM. :3

So is there more to this microscope thing than just creating a timeline? Also, I can help with the chronology.

@Wardian There's also a yes/no thing.

Each of us could come up with one unexpected thing that should appear somewhere in the timeline, and one thing that's expected that should never appear.

Like 'yes' to space travel, 'no' to elves.

Cool beans. Are we just starting out with the timeline and then adding more mechanics to it later? I know microscope has this whole 80 page rulebook, I guess I will go read it so I know what I am talking about first though.

So, after reading the manual for Microscope I believe it is not a good fit for what we have here. Microscope is designed to be played in real time among the same 2-4 people, each taking short, bite-sized turns at being creative. That does not translate well at all into a forum world building project where we people regularly drop out completely after a single post, and even those who stick around may take weeks before replying.

Microscope is also focused around chronology. It encourages you to delve into the details about why and how an empire fell, but it does not seem to me that it would help create zany new ideas like the gutterfolk or vendors.

There were a few things about I liked that I suggest we incorporate though:

  • The timeline - essential for keeping things organized. Relative positions only. (I don't think we should use the period/event/scene structure. And the light/dark thing is pointless, even when playing proper Microscope.)
  • Focus - After every so many posts, we pick a theme that all posts must relate to until the next round. This will help make sure we are building off of eachother's ideas instead of each making up our own parallel worlds. Perhaps we can have a free round every now and then.
  • No ownership - as long as what you write does not contradict what has already been canonized, it is allowed. Nobody owns any idea and everyone is allowed to expound upon them or use them in their own posts. In fact, we should remove the author of the articles in the index to reinforce this idea.

Added a new article, The Three Rivers Telo Trials and added it to timeline but not article list as it is not canon yet. Also feel like it was quite a bit longer than it needed to be, sorry! :(
