I'm not much familiar with the States, but I've allways been partial to New Orleans as an Anne Rice fan

Oh, now I just had a thought. Why not Detroit? It's large, dangerous with its crime, and there's many places abandoned and overgrown.

That is an interesting notion. Kind of grim that if you really need help you have to go to Detroit!

I go to Detroit fairly regularly for one of my many time-devouring hobbies, and the city doesn't feel nearly as desperate and dangerous as the common narrative likes to portray it. I still prefer Chicago, but I don't dread my visits or anything.

That said, it's not a bad idea. To an extent the city can be interchangeable - unless you're going to tightly couple the story to the location, what you really wind up "needing" is just the urban backdrop. Every city has abandoned and overgrown areas, every city has the "nice" and "bad" parts of town. We could even do Tucson or St. Louis or Salt Lake City. Well, maybe less that one; I've never been anywhere so clean.

Oh I live in Chicago! I wouldn't mind it being set there, but I prefer settings I don't know too well.

I am down for Detroit

I've been there twice over the years. Honestly Birmingham (where I live) had the 6th highest murder rate in the country a few years back, but I've never had problems with it. It usually depends on where you look and where you go, no matter the city you're in. But Detroit does have a higher crime percentage than most, though I've only heard of the abandoned portions of the city. I've never seen them myself.

Oop! Didn't see your edit.

If we don't do Detroit, then Chicago is my vote. One of the two.

I'm fine with whatever you guys decide, since my only knowledge about any of those cities comes either from books of TV shows

I suppose it would depend if we want the Gotham feel to our setting... Or the mysterious, magic, voodoo-y feel... which would be in my mind New Orleans

We could go for Salem

Since Katrina, New Orleans has changed a lot from what it used to be. It's mostly a bad tourist trap near the Quarter and than the further you go out, really heavy slum areas. It's a lot more run down and abandoned than it used to be.

I personally think that it might be best to just create a fictional city like Gotham or Metropolis, but if we wanted to stay in the states, my vote is for Chicago or Detroit.

@PanicYes, my cousin's told me the same thing about New Orleans... But since it's too sad, I prefer to live in romantic denial

It may be that I'm there right now, but I'm developing some strong feelings for Las Vegas as a setting.

@PennyI mean if it was the 20s san fransisco would be great, but modern day its just kinda eh. Also I have a bad feeling we'd end up mistaking hipsters for witches.

On a positive note burning at the stake is just as effective with hipsters as with witches. Also they were into it before it was cool

San Francisco actually could be kind of cool. Plenty of stories and ghosts and all from the gold rush days, and the Silicon Startup Slickness would be a pretty great juxtaposed background for the supernatural world. I'd like that a lot, I think.

I'm leaning towards Chicago for the Noir-eqse feel. I think setting it in Miami would give it too much of a Burn Notice feel. Although that would be an amazing rp too...

Y'all know my votes. Detroit or Chicago.
San Fran sounds neat, though I've never been there.
