I thought Matt was an irredeemable piece of shit the first time he appeared on screen, not that I followed Digimon very closely. But it doesn't look like his character changed much over the episodes.

Matt still has everyone from season 4,5,6 and beyond to contend with. I think a can find a few, more useless, stupider and less redeemable characters from those seasons at the very least.

All I can remember from my casual Digimon days is when Tai threw up in some girls beanie and then went into a computer to beat the shit out of a rogue digimon.

I don't remember him throwing up into a beanie...I don't think ANYONE in the main cast even wears a beanie.

Tai was be a little shit at times, but he grew up, unlike Matt, who got progressively worse over the course of the series, which isn't helped by his digimon partner being the single biggest pushover in the original Adventure series.
