Heyo, Azzy here. Been lurking around the forums for a bit now, ever since having this site mentioned to me by a friend. Figured it might be about time to actually make an account and at least get somewhat involved in the community. Gunna spam a bit of info about mahself nao. Huzzah! XD
Roleplaying Career:
I mean, I'm a pretty big nerd, so roleplaying has basically been a staple in my life. Buuuuuuut, if you were specifically asking about my experience with regards to roleplaying on forums, I'd have to say the first RP forum I joined was in 2005. I've been doing D&D for even longer, though not by more than a couple years. Up until this point, I have almost exclusively done proboards, with each forum being a single self-contained world. The first site I ever RPed on was a Harry Potter one, though that was more a function of a friend inviting me to join the site they were on than personal interest. I have RPed through all sorts of different fandoms and original worlds since then. I've even run a few sites here and there, though nothing nearly so large as this site- the largest prolly capped around 500 members at peak.
At present I'd have to assume that I am rusty and out of practice with written RPing, having spent several years away from it and coming back and find that the big trend in proboards is allcaps fonts, explosions of colors and giant buttons covering the screen. Being the crotchety older RPer that I am, this caused me to retreat into the aether to reminisce about the "good 'ole days when kids cared more about content than flashy skins" (in hindsight this could just be attributed the super lax standards of early adolescence). That being said, I do like the relatively simplistic, yet clearly functional layout here- being much more similar to what I had grown accustomed to over the years.
Roleplaying Preferences:
Whelp, like I mentioned, up until this point I've been on sites where the entire forum is designed to be one large RPing world, with individual boards being different locations, different threads being separate events and all players on the site being a part of the collective narrative of the world. As a result, I have some hesitation when it comes to the idea of entire roleplays contained to single threads. It still feels pretty unfamiliar, since it is not what I am accustomed to (it is likely also the explanation for why I have lurked for so long without actually joining).
When it comes to the actual roleplaying, I have always had a special place in my heart for high fantasy sorts of settings. Besides my favorite, I do sometimes like to roleplay in worlds that are modeled after the fandoms I am currently most interested in. When it comes to those, however, I tend to be pretty strictly non-canon (wanna start an RP about people trapped inside a videogame? Sounds cool. Looking for someone to play Kirito or Balmung in said RP? I'll prolly pass.). Beyond that, I really like world-building and rules systems (hashtag nerdlife). I do tend to prefer more than just one-on-one Roleplays, with more people being involved giving me much more content to reply to. As far as posting speed goes, once upon a time I could fire back posts as fast as whoever I post with could respond, but those days are long gone. Optimistically, I'd like to say that I can reliably reply on a daily basis.
As far as the different Roleplaying boards are concerned, I think the Casual Roleplay area seems likely to resonate most with my preference. While I can respect the idea that a single solid one-liner can sometimes be a hilarious and appropriate response to some situations, in general I prefer to have a bit more to go off of when posting replies. As far as Advanced Roleplying, years of being on staff at various sites has left me with some degree of bitterness towards the word. Namely in the sense that virtually every instance of mod intervention I had to deal with due to bullying/toxic behavior were instigated by members who self-identified as "advanced" or "elite" (of course, the first step in addressing bias is acknowledging it is present, so I do intend to make the effort to approach everything with an open mind).
Also, this Persistent World dealio looks kinda neat. Though I have to check it out more thoroughly, it is almost looking like a decent middle ground between what I am historically accustomed to in RP sites and the general approach to RPing here. Nation and Tabletop Roleplay boards also look like something I might potentially be interested in.
Interests and Hobbies:
Well, I look to my left at a pile of Magic cards, I look to my right at a stack of 5e books and dice tower made to look like a castle and surrounded in framed fanart of LoL characters. I think I'm pretty solidly a nerd, with a fairly standard nerd CV. My interests reflect my generally high fantasy-themed RP preferences, with the standard set of Tolkien, G.R.R. Martin, Brandon Sanderson, Robert Jordan, etc. books and paraphernalia littering my apartment.
I am also super into board games and end up being the person in the group generally responsible for learning and knowing the rules of each game, which I don't really mind because I love rules systems. Some of my favorites include Lords of Waterdeep, Terra Mystica, Tyrants of the Underdark, Caverna and Mysterium.
I also have decided I would like to learn both how to play piano and how to code (via yousician and codecademy respectively), though I am still kinda just trash-panda level at both.
