The year is 2018. And the world is exactly how you'd expect, but also completely different. Here in the city that never sleeps, there is a world within a world, where people who have long since been forgotten attempt to live their lives. You've probably heard of them though they come in many different names; elves, fairies, vampires, werewolves, gargoyles and so on. What? You thought they were just fairy tales? You're not the only one. Hundreds of years ago these peoples lived in the open, only occasionally crossing with humans. When out of fear humans began to hunt them, forcing some to extinction and the rest into hiding. Some populations are so secluded they are almost entirely unaware of each other. It has been this way for centuries. Recently though some of these people have become unhappy with the often less than desirable life forced on them by the need for secrecy. Thus they have slowly begun revealing themselves to the public fighting for equal rights, facing persecution and prejudice along the way. While this is happening, others are simply trying to just get on with their lives. This, is where our story lies.

In the city that never sleeps, some people find it challenging to pinpoint when the day ends and night begins. That is, for the people who aren't watching. Chelki was not one of those people however. She spent her entire day watching and watching and watching. Just paining for the sun the set to stretch her wings and fly in disguise of night. Technically, she could move about whenever she please but people might find it suspect if 'The Winged Lady' statue simply vanished mid-day. Even more so if she was seen walking about. At night when the park was closed to the public however, Chelki felt a bit more free to move about. Nights with cloudy skies like tonights were easily her favourite.

"Another day done, thank god." Chelki lamented to herself changing from her statued pose--wings folded and hands pressed together neatly as if in prayer. Her shoulders cracking as she stretched them out, her wings generating a gust of air as she opened them. Felt good to be alive again. With a quick shake of her tail Chelki took to the sky going high above the clouds where she basked at the feeling of the wind in her hair. Her favourite part of the otherwise mundane routine that was her life.

CRACK

"What was th-" Chelki didn't even finish her sentence when she felt a sharp pain in her left wing. Looking over she saw blood creeping out. Down below she heard people screaming and sirens gathering. "A gun?" Chelki whispered as her vision got blurry and she began sink to the ground, landing in a cramped alleyway amongst some garbage. There's no way anyone could've seen her, she was perfectly hidden. Must've just been a stray bullet from some petty human squabble. Just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

With all that was went on in the city, Avery had stopped paying attention all together. He didn't like all the noise, so he stayed hidden within the darkness of the alley. While in his small form he could pass out as a fly. But once he was human sized his pointed ears and wings made him stand out. In this world, his people had learned to adapt and they were everywhere. The bright, colourful faeries were allowed to stay within the public eye. They would dance and live among the flowers and trees within the city parks, Avery however wasn't so lucky. With his white his white to black coloring he was confined to living like a big.

Many of his friends had gone to bed for the night, or at least none of them were around to play tricks on the passing by humans with him. He was stalking out his first target coming down the sidewalk. She was a slender woman with long brown hair. Dressed head to toe of formal wear was wonderful for him. With a snap of his tiny fingers and her heel will break, she will fall and land either in the alley way beside him or in a puddle from rain that had stayed hidden from the sun long enough the get dirty.

Watching his prey, Avery lifted his hands and just as he was about to let go a crash came from behind him. Letting out a mischievous giggle the faery did a back flip and flew over the noise. "Hello? What are you doing in there?" They tiny faery asked the being that landed in the trash. His voice came as a high pitched chime as his bare feet landed on a black garbage bag.

Chelki groaned, her head was killing. Luckily her good wing was able to break her fall so she didn't hurt anywhere but her wing. The warm wetness seeped out so much she was sure that whatever she was lying on must be completely red by now. Whatever colour it was she knew one thing and that was that it was incredibly uncomfortable. Something hard stuck into her back while something else crinkled every time she moved.

"Hello? What are you doing in there?" The little voice hit her ears and Chelki opened her eyes. She was in an alley surrounded by garbage. Probably laying on it too, which explained why it felt so awful. Trash wasn't known for being a creature comfort. Her eyes darted all around her still looking for the voice, the only thing she could see was a fly sitting on the bag across from hers.

"Hello? Who said that?" Her eyes darted all around her still looking for the voice, the only thing she could see was a fly sitting on the bag across from hers. Then her eyes settled on the little bug and for a moment she though she might be crazy. "Is that you speaking?" Chelki had a look of concern across her prominent brow. Mostly for her ownself.

Avery giggled softly at the sight of the creature woman looking around from the source of the voice. He said nothing as her eyes darted about and only watched as her gaze stopped breifly on him before moving onto the rest of the world. Sitting down on the black. Garbage bag only made him seem more of a fly to the untrained eye as he waited for her to go crazy and come back to him.

When her eyes finally met his tiny body and she asked if the voice came from him, he took aa moment to answer, just to make her, for a moment, feel like she was truly going insane. "Of course it was me, who else would it be in a dark alley, alone at night. He chimed before jumping up. Letting his wings flap once to give him some air before he drifted down to the bag and let his feet hit it with a slight crinkle.

" What are you doing here??" Avery asked again in a light, curious tone. He had really never seen creatures like her, or at least not this close up. She interested him, and if she were to look closely she would see that he wasn't a fly at all.

Chelki watched as the little fly hopped on the bag, looking a little closer she could swear she saw a little person. She'd seen fairies before, there were dozens of them in her park. Sometimes they chatted with her during the day when she couldn't move. Most of them were nice, though some them could sorely learn when to leave well enough alone. One can only hear listen to so many complaints about how rude humans are. However, the ones in her park looked more like butterflies or ladybugs. The odd firefly mockery popped at night, but she could swear she'd never met a fly.

"Aren't you a bit... ugly to be a fairy?" She asked incredulously, unaware of just how offensive her question was. She pushed herself off the garbage so that she was sitting upright and looked back down at the little man, swaying her tail a bit on the ground to clear a spot for her feet.
