The Lamplit Men

“The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.”
- Proverbs 13:9

It is the year 1756 - The kingdoms of Europe are on the brink of war, powdered wigs and tricorn hats are the stock wardrobe of every Western gentleman, and in a small hamlet in Romania, the dead begin to walk the earth.

Within months, the pandemic has crossed the Bosporus and wrought havoc in the Ottoman Empire, enveloped the entirety of the Balkan Peninsula, and is now ravaging the east Prussian countryside, inching ever closer to the Rhine. It is becoming clear in Western Europe that the continent will not be safe for much longer. With refugees (and infected with them) flooding in from the East, the great colonial empires of Western Europe turn to the safe haven they have been constructing for centuries - the New World. All over the continent, papers are hurriedly pulled out of drawers, prepared, and signed, all meaning one thing to their bearers - safe passage to the Americas.

And the Americas are not happy.

The colonists are more resentful now, for it is not just the colonial authorities sapping away at their resources - refugees from Austria, Greece, Denmark, and Italy are now the recipients of the bounty of the New World. Tensions between colonists and colonial authorities are at an all-time high, with many territories suing for independence and the right to dictate their own migratory policies. One of those territories is Saint Alexander, an island colony governed by the British Empire seventy-five miles off the coast of South Carolina. As the easternmost territory of the region, Saint Alexander has been unceremoniously christened as a ‘halfway house’ and the first responder to the refugee crisis in those parts. The island is now burdened with the danger that comes with a large intake of refugees, and it is becoming increasingly clear that even a minor outbreak would merit an island-wide quarantine. The residents of Saint Alexander are angry at two parties - those in the east who force the dangers of the infection onto them, and those in the mainland in the west who refuse to share the burden of accepting the damned of Europe.

You are a refugee arriving at Saint Alexander on the H.M.S. Lioness in the autumn of 1756, nine months after the infection started. You could be from anywhere from Turkey to Spain: all that matters is that you get to the mainland as soon as possible, which at the moment is not at all likely due to the Province of South Carolina having implemented near-impossible requirements for entry of persons and materials. If you don’t find a way to North Carolina soon, you could very well be trapped on Saint Alexander as part of a quarantine. You have also heard, from mutterings and rumors on the voyage, that the Indian savages have developed a cure - and that some of them have traveled to Saint Alexander to help.

Good day, fellow Guilders. I am BingTheWing, and this lovechild of mine is pretty much zombies with flintlocks. We are refugees from Europe and beyond, having fled to the American colonies from the disease called the ‘Grey Rot’ (named so after the complexions of its victims) that seemingly resurrects the dead and turns them into mindless cannibalistic corpses that spread their infection through the contact of bodily fluids, most especially biting. Your task could probably be the ensuring of your own long-term survival, most easily obtained if passage to the mainland is acquired, or you could stay and help find a cure to the disease. I’m looking for an initial group of about 5 to 6 - we could accept more members if the roleplay is going slowly.

I'm also not sure whether to put this in Casual or Advanced - I'll just make two IntChecks, I guess.

Anyone up?

I'm interested. I have a few characters in mind just for this sort of thing too.. They are similar in period and location but they will probably need to be tweaked. I'm also making a few more. i'm currently in the process of beefing up my character compendium sooo..

@Arkitekt Not bad, but your characters would have to have originated from somewhere other than the Americas (they're already in America, why would they need to go east, where the plague is?). Also, be aware that female characters may also be mistreated and looked down upon, just like in real life.

@BingTheWing Yes I know. That's why I said they'd needed to be tweaked. I'm also completely fine with them being mistreated.. They are whores.. hahah!! I can put them back to their original origins (Ireland and France) or figure out some sort of backstory that puts them there. Or maybe they could be a pair of undercover cleaners/hunters, who traveled there under the guise of service providers to ensure that the grey rot doesn't spread further to the colonies? Whatever you think.. One practices voodoo, so that would be interesting in the mix of things..

Whatever works for you, just let me know. I have been dying to use them so I don't mind making alternate CS's for them, (I have multiples on some of my characters already due to this sort of thing) so it isn't a big deal.

Here is a writing sample too:

@Arkitekt If they’re whores they would probably be forced out of business due to the rot spreading through bodily fluids, haha. Original countries of origin would be cool with me. I’m not so sure about the undercover hunters thing... this is a story of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, and I’d prefer to keep the characters rather lowkey. The most combat experience any one character would have would either be military service or an upbringing in the slums. If your character was from the upper class of society though, if they pushed for it they could have had a few fencing lessons here and there.

Female characters in this setting (who aren’t prostitutes) would probably have been initially attached to a family that has attempted to flee from Europe, whether as a wife, a daughter, or a servant. Said family may or may not be dead upon arrival at St. Alexander, though if they aren’t dead bear in mind your character will have to balance caring for them with interacting with the other characters in the RP. Even if you are single and have no surviving family, you would probably go with friends. A female character that has made the journey independently on purpose, however, will require a more solid CS.

You could also play a native of Saint Alexander as well, though you would have to provide an explanation as to why you haven’t evacuated to the mainland yet.

But in the end, your characters being strong independent women would most certainly work in this setting, seeing as ‘proper’ ladies of the time that were overdependent on their families would have probably not survived the pandemic.

Your writing sample is also excellent, by the way - glad to have you aboard!

@BingTheWing I understand that. What if the two (and possibly a third?) traveled together from France, all from the same establishment (as a sort of makeshift family) fleeing the plague for better odds in the Americas.. only to find their efforts are in vain? They are definitely hardened from their upbringings in poverty stricken environments, hand over fist type characters. No surviving contacts to speak of so they just uprooted overnight. They are tooth and nail, gritty, and aren't shy about "doing deeds that need be done". Real frontier like women. I will most likely make a single sheet containing all of them and post accordingly as well.

I can handle more than one character within a post, and it would be easier to keep up with in all of the boards as well. Is there a CS template you have in mind that I can adhere to? Any other info on attributes or skillsets? I'm not usually into the whole zombie thing (don't get me wrong TWD is fine and all, just a bit played out) but this one has got my attention..

Currently working on a timeline of the outbreak so as to make character creation easier.

If you have any questions as to what could have happened to your character during the outbreak, you may ask them now.

@BingTheWing Seems to be fairly accurate. I will try and post my CS submission by tonight, depending on how my day is.. I take care of two special needs kids in the home so it's 50/50 daily... but I will try and get them out by tonight.

@BingTheWing I thought this was just an interest thread? Is there a CS template somewhere that I don't know about?

@Jbcool Nope, just people getting excited hahaha. The CS will probably be your generic history/ability/equipment shebang, but at the moment you are free to send me what you would put in your character's 'Biography' field.

@Arkitekt Woah, slow down there pardner! Are you just sending me your character biographies?

@BingTheWing yes, that is what I meant to say. There is no CS so it'd be hard to pull off without the proper template. I'm in no rush. I have three or four other things going on at the moment so I am totally fine with not being rushed.

Important: I'm kind of busy for the rest of the year, and though I will do my best to keep things going I am going to need a co-GM. Anyone want to volunteer?
