an option is to have your characters do what real humans do: make horrible mistakes and lash out at one another, ruining everything and leaving only a long hard road to emotional recovery as the true ending.

Oh yeah, that'll happen. I just don't know who is good with who, though.

@POOHEAD189 Alternatively, perhaps a romantic subplot is not necessary -- or perhaps it does not get resolved in this book. Don't worry about best. Who would they be interested in now?

@Antarctic Termite I like you. All the mistakes.

@shylarah My narrator just got arrested for putting a bullet through the throne of God. Fear me.

Random question, but do you guys have any word crawl/sprint/dare/etc recommendations? I've been doing the ASOIAF/GOT word crawl and enjoying myself immensely

@ayzrules not offhand, I'm afraid. If you really want dares, though, I have a bunch saved, and I will gladly pelt you with any number of my favorites.

Me: Huh, I haven't included a single romantic arc so far. I think it fits the main characters' themes, though, and I don't really need it for the story to function. Also, the sidekick mentor definitely isn't the main character and that vendor I mentioned like once isn't going to make an appearance.

@Antarctic Termite I've had this happen all over. It was especially fun when my rp char's eventual husband (like three IRL years later) asked him out by saying the best pickup line of all time: "When I saw you get eaten by that dragon, I realized I liked you. Wanna grab dinner?"

At the moment, I think I have enough high-grade emotional stakes without involving a romance subplot - but I'm just now realizing that I've never written a romantic arc for any main character. I still don't think my story needs one, but it's something to think about.

Everything always has a romantic subplot and as an ace/aro potato it drives me nuts. I get it, survival of the species is a big deal, but there are so many other wonderful character dynamics to explore.

writing a fight scene involving a mall cop and a thug: Intense action! Drama! Engaging spur-of-the-moment strategy that keeps you on your toes!

writing a fight scene between the main character and God: lol let's describe the exact same thing thirteen times over the course of five pages then bail her out with a poorly concealed Chekhov gun, that'll do it

Fawkes the cheeky bullshit phoenix would be proud

On romance arcs, my characters seem to want one. I'm trying really hard not to give it to them, but I'm starting to think killing one and making their whole relationship ambiguous is probably the best way to fix things.

@Keyguyperson look, if the characters are clamoring, you can only fight them so long. Characters can be stubborn. *much-put-upon sigh*

@KeyguypersonSame thing here. I have one female character, and I don't want her to end up with my main character, because that's overdone and bs. But their dialogue is too good!

I'm closing on on 32,000 words, after a brief stint to write about 7000 words of "a different thing" while I let some unresolved outline and motivation points percolate. My brain eventually spit out what I'm hoping will be a fairly elegant framework for "why did this character do this thing," and flesh out the conspiracy-thriller theme in this weird superhuman story.

I like this story, and I really like the two main characters. I'm real sad one of them has to die.

@NarilI have a character I meant to kill off, but he's really depressed now and I don't know if death is the right path for him.

Just reached 25k today, after ~7 hours (1-2 hour break in between, plus lots of mini breaks for food throughout) of writing! I also went to my first write-in and it was SUPER fun!!!

I'm still behind though, sigh. And I don't know how much longer my inspiration for this weird random story thing that I'm 95% pantsing is going to last :D
