Akiva Hishamie

The color blue had always held a small and strange sway over Akiva. As he stood only a few feet away from the glass that separated him from the sea life in the aquarium Akiva thought that no place like the aquarium in Oceano Beach. Akiva already felt like his usually lazy demeanor was a little dangerous, and when he visited the aquarium he usually ended up putting down his guard completely. He couldn't help doing that to himself it was just a bad habit. Most jobs he worked on did not lead him to large bodies of water or to aquariums in general but he made it a point to try to avoid any aquarium based jobs if possible. Not that there was a lot of work options in that area, which Akiva appreciated. A small dolphin suddenly swam past the glass slowly, circling around the underwater tank it was in. As it swam closer to the glass the smaller children that were watching squeaked with glee and excitement. Akiva was surrounded by the munchkins, suddenly aware he was the only grown man watching this seriously. Akiva blushed slightly and chuckled softly, turning around and walking out of the group of children that had formed around him.

He stumbled out of the group awkwardly, trying not to kick any of the small children who had no idea what the definition of personal space was. As he was able to escape her stumbled, hopping on one foot for a second until he centered himself. He ignored the faces of the parents that were present, ignoring their stifled laughter. Walking away with what little pride he had, Akiva walked away from the dolphin exhibit with his hands in his pockets and an embarrassed smile on his face.

Akiva found an exit as he walked on that would lead him out of the aquarium and proceeded through it. As Akiva looked up into the daytime sky, he was extremely gladdened that he could be here and was not arrested in that gas station incident. Akiva looked down and pulled his hands out of his pockets. He opened them, and as quick as he could he made a pulse of energy underneath the palm of his hands. Akiva narrowed his brows and sighed out loud. Having powers meant that he could do so much more than the average man. But when he did the punishment for him was always twice as much. He would have been put to death if caught, or dissected, or used as a weapon. Akiva truly didn't know, people were always able to surprise him when it came to the depths of their cruelty.

Akiva shook his head, eager to be rid of such melancholy thoughts. No work meant not being allowed to think like an adult today. Akiva paused for a moment, thinking back on what he had done so far and what to do next. In the morning he had gotten into that little..situation but had been able to get away from the police. He was sure that he had entered and left hiding his face from any camera angle, and the unlucky cashier probably wouldn't be able to describe him very well. But to make sure, Akiva went to a store afterward to purchase new clothes. Akiva decided on a pair of slim fitting black jeans, a simple gray v neck, a hooded black long sleeve jacket, and a pair of black and white converse. As Akiva left the store and pulled his hood up on his jacket a thought struck him. He had made decent money from the last job and he probably should have given Chenoa some sort of...well reward. Akiva did not know what else to call it, besides a reward for her efforts. She may not have understood everything that happened but she had put in a lot of effort. Kinda. Akiva went through the numbers in his head and decided on his next course of action.

Akiva pulled out his wallet and thumber over the top of the bills he kept on him. He had about a grand in different types of bills in his wallet, which after buying clothes was very much lightened. Sighing, he knew what he had to do. Since he felt like he owed someone more, if he did it now he would not have to do it later. It took Akiva about an hour to walk back home, to which he boldly walked back inside expecting an extremely angry sister but instead found nothing. Akiva panicked for a moment when he could not hear anyone home, his sister not home, but calmed himself down. If she chose to leave that was her choice, but Akiva worried none the less. Her health was at risk whenever she went out and was especially more so when she went out alone. Akiva sighed but continued to his room, immediately going to his stash of money hidden away. He mainly had 100 dollar bills but Akiva figured she wouldn't mind. Akiva put the cash in a vanilla envelope, closed it, and put in underneath his arm on the inside of his jacket. Altogether he had about two hundred grand in cash, and even more in offshore accounts. While he and his sister had money, they preferred to spend very little on luxuries. The less flashy the better, and most of their money they put into accounts not easily accessed so whatever cash they have is cash they withdrew after completing a job and getting paid. So 5 grand did not seem like a poor gift.

Akiva traveled by taxi to the cafe that Chenoa worked at, but kept his hood on so he could hide most of his face. He left the vanilla envelope, as well as a note left inside the envelope, in the mail slot then got back into the taxi. He laughed to himself. He left her a note written in blue pen which had stated," For Dove ". He hoped Chenoa understood that it was meant for her since he had called her that as a nickname. With the debt repaid Akiva decided that since he had a little bit more spending money with him that he deserved a treat. He gave the driver instructions to go to the aquarium.

Which brought Akiva's train of thought to an abrupt stop as he finished remembering what he had done so far today. Kill a man, pay a girl, see a fish? Akiva laughed out loud at his own weirdness. He did not mind when a few people stopped and stared at his antics, but his laughter died out anyway. Akiva took out his phone and called another taxi service for a pickup, deciding on where to go next.

Emery Randal

The cool afternoon breeze, the tree branches swaying and dancing to the rhythm of life, the playful chirping of birds as they flew across the sky, the sunlight shining through shifting branches. Emery absorbed all this as he sat on a large oak branch a few feet above the air. Even though it seemed that nothing was going on here, Emery still felt energized knowing that everything as far as his eyes can see are full of life. From that high up, Emery can see everything from his modern house and his neighors to the tall buildings on another sector of Esperanza.

Emery only heard tales about the really harsh life majority of the people having on Esperanza from his parents. After all, his parents had been there and did all they could to make sure their children won’t experience this again. Emery is truly grateful to them except that they could be a real handful sometimes.

He glanced down towards his house when he saw his father waving down on him. Emery climbed down the tree in a matter of moments. He’s become an expert at climbing trees despite still having a frail body where he can easily be defeated in bouts, though anyone who truly knows him know he’s too timid and graceful enough to be singled out in a fight.

Emery shook off and removed some leaves and twigs that got caught on his long overly sized white t-shirt and light blue flanned pajama pants. He walked towards his dad who’s dressed like the usual: silver grey suit and pants with a white undershirt and black leather shoes and tie. He looked at the time at his gold-colored wristwatch as he carried a leather bag on his other hand.

“Another meeting?”, Emery asked.

“Yep, just like the usual”, his father said as he removed a few leaves that got tangled in his son’s shoulder-length hair. “We’re finalizing some plans for the university which would be done already if one of my co-board members wasn’t allergic to ink.”

Emery raised his eyebrows a bit. “What pla-“

His father shushed and put a finger on his son’s mouth before he could finish. “You keep on asking the same question and I’ll be giving you the same answer every time: it’s top secret.”

“But it’s been going on forever. Besides, why can’t you trust me? I don’t have that much of a circle of friends to tell someone anyway.”

“It’s not like we don’t trust you, pancake, and I really understand your impatience. I myself am over this plan to be finished so I can relax and watch a movie with your mom but alas, that is not just the way of life.”

Emery’s father looked at his wristwatch. “Well kiddo better get going now. And uhh”, he leaned in closer to whisper at Emery. “I left a few hundred dollars at your wallet. I know your mom doesn’t like you going out that much so be careful. Make sure you use them wisely yeah?”, he said with a wink.

Emery beamed and hugged his father. Then he did a series of high-fives and punches with his dad.

“Honey? We gotta go or we’re gonna be late”, Emery’s mom called from their car at their driveway. She too was dressed in a professional way with a matching silver-grey suit and women pants with a white blouse and black heels, her hair in a tight bun. She saw her husband whispering something to Emery, making her scratch her chin and squint her eyes.

Emery’s father waved and rubbed Emery’s head before he jogged to their car. “Bye pancakes!”, Emery’s mom shouted as she waved and blew a kiss. Emery waved and smiled in response as his parents go into their car and his mom seemingly suspicious and asking his dad, no doubt curious about what he whispered to his son.

As Emery saw them pulling out of their driveway, he immediately went back inside his home and went upstairs to his room, showered and put on some new clothes before getting his bag with the wallet full of cash his dad gave him. On his way out, he passed by his sister’s room and knocked. “Going out now. Might return later.” He heard a groan from inside the room which means his sister just woken up and is currently in the process of becoming a human woman.

Emery shouted a final goodbye as he hurried out of the house to his bicycle at their garage. A smile was painted on his face as he pedaled away to the new day, excited on what he might see and learn today.

Chenoa Bearfoot

The bus dropped Chen and Isaac off just two blocks from Josie’s. They hopped off, her holding her guitar and bag of extra knick-knacks and him holding her amp, and they walked together in excited silence, as they couldn’t wait to get home and start playing.

When they got to the door to the stairs that led up to their apartment, Chenoa just missed the corner of an envelope hanging out of their mailbox that Isaac pointed out.

“Is today a mail day?” he asked as he pulled the white envelope out. His eyes widened as he felt how thick it was. “Damn, I think this is cash!” he exclaimed. “And it says ‘Dove’ on it. Who’s Dove?”

Chenoa had already opened the door and was on the first step when he said this, and she turned in her tracks and took two long, quick strides towards him immediately.

“What do you mean?” She knew that ‘Dove’ meant that it must have been for her. But the only people who called her that were her grandparents and her father. Isaac handed her the thick envelope, and she started to rip it open. Isaac tried to stop her, saying that she could be fined for opening someone else’s mail, but they both stopped and stared once they saw the green paper. It looked like it was about $5000. Once she saw it, Chen understood. She gently put her guitar case on the floor and rifled through the bills, looking for some sort of note for proof of her theory, but she was quite sure that she was right anyway.

Isaac was starting to get nervous, and he seemed to not know that the gift was, in fact, hers. She stopped to quickly explain to him the story.

“A few days ago, I helped out a new friend with one of his jobs. He’s probably just giving me part of his pay as a thank you. He called me Dove a few times, that’s how a knew this was for me.” She silently hoped that he wouldn’t ask about the job; she had no idea what to make up that would seem reasonable.

Isaac’s face loosened, and he mouthed a silent ‘ah’ as the realization came over him.

“So that’s what you were doing the other day when you were out till past midnight without telling any of us.” He shook a finger at her as he smiled, then he raised an eyebrow at her. “You went out and got yourself a sugar daddy, didn’t you?” He playfully elbowed her in the side. Chenoa put the cash in the back pocket of her jeans as he spoke, nodding at his first sentence. When he suggested that Akiva was her sugar daddy she made a face at Isaac.

“I did not!!” Chen exclaimed, pushing him a bit. “Who do you think I am?”

“Seriously, that is a lot of cash, Chen. Way too much for just helping out a friend with a job. Either he killed someone, and that’s hush-money--or he likes you. Also, he gave you a cute little nickname,” he added, pointing to her name on the front of the envelope.

“it’s not a ‘cute little nickname,’” she retorted, as she picked up her guitar to make her way up the stairs again, “my name, Chenoa, means Dove. It’s just a friendly nickname he gave me.”

“Yeah, totally, just a friend.” Isaac joked, clicking his tongue as he followed close behind. “Think you could call him up and get him to give me some moolah too? Since he seems to have so much extra cash lying around already.”

“I wish,” she joked, “I never got his phone number when we hung out. And I’m surprised he even remembered where I lived from when he dropped me off.”

“So you met some guy and helped him at work; he gave you a ride home and a shit ton of cash; he knows where you live, but he doesn’t know your name. And you never know if you’ll ever even see him again because you never exchanged numbers. Do you even know his last name? Chen, you’re an accident waiting to happen.”

--

When the two let themselves into the two-level apartment, Chenoa passed her guitar and bag of other items to Isaac.

“Just lay everything on my bed, for now, I’ll put everything away when I get home.”

“Where are you going?”

Chenoa shrugged. “Around, I guess. Just going for a walk. I’ll keep my phone on this time.” she added with a smile.

“No more selling yourself!” Isaac said, shaking a finger at her as she grabbed an apple and her messenger bag and made for the door.

--

In truth, Chenoa had no idea where she was going. She wanted to go out, feel the warm air and cool breeze on her skin. She didn’t really know where she planned on going, and just walked in whichever direction felt nice to her, which happened to be back in the direction of the park down the street. She plugged her headphones into her ear and put on a playlist of various upbeat classics, mostly queen, and put her phone in the back pocket of her light blue jeans, opposite side of the envelope. She put her hands in the front pocket of her black hoodie and walked to the beat of "Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy" by Queen.

As she walked, she thought about Akiva and wondered if she could find him somehow, and thank him for the money he left her, despite never asking for anything for helping with the robbery. She doubted it though, after all, she had only met him by chance the first time around. And she didn’t have any way to contact him either.

Conscious again of the wad of cash in her pocket, she hastily put the envelope in her purse, cursing herself for not putting it away when she left the house. She was a perfect target for a robbery now. She decided to try to think of other things instead of getting robbed.

Instead, she thought about How many other people with mutant abilities might exist. She herself could shapeshift, and she knew that Akiva had healing powers. Maybe peoples' powers had some correlations with their lives? Chenoa had always had a connection with nature, whether it was a trait of her own or something she inherited from her father, also a nature lover.

She wondered why Akiva had Healing abilities. He didn't seem the type to have much concern in a lot of peoples' health, though it did come in handy in his choice of career. perhaps when he was younger, he wanted to be a doctor when he grew up? Or something traumatic had happened?

Soon she was walking through the park and found herself trying to guess which passers-by might also have these powers. After passing several people, she gave up, thinking to herself that it would be impossible to guess that sort of thing.

Her mind was still racing with possibilities and questions. Why do only some people have powers and not everyone? What if there are groups of super-powered people, that have their own sort of underground community? How do people hide their abilities? What if these kidnappers that are continuously on the news are super-powered people?

Before she knew it, she was in a part of the neighbourhood that she did not recognize. SHe did not care, she knew she could eventually find her way back home using google maps or something. She just continued to walk past houses and variety stores, storefronts and restaurants.

She wondered if she would meet anybody else interesting today.
