The Dramatis Personae

The Night Library
The library itself. It almost has a consciousness as it observes the adventures that can happen within.

The Assistant Librarian
She is almost the epitome of a librarian. Her dark hair is twisted back in a low bun, but no matter how many times the library patrons see her tucking the wisps that escape at the side of her face back into the bun, they always slip back out to frame her face. She wears rectangular glasses that sit low on her nose. Her no-nonsense expression seems to hint at her inner strength, but the tiniest curve at the corners of her mouth betray a barely contained amusement at some private joke. Dark eyes stare out through the glasses with a sharpness that might cut you. Her clothes always stay in the same understated fashion in greys, whites, blacks and browns, but somewhere on her is always a hidden pop of color. Her well tailored vest sports anametag that simply states "Asst. Librarian". She seems to move with complete silence and only adds to the mystical and disconcerting aura of the library itself.

Margaret Lessing

At first glance, an unassuming older lady in her early seventies. She walks slightly stiffly, with just a touch of arthritis in her knees. Her hair is white at the temples and grades through grey to its original black. It is cut short, and the back of her neck is tanned a deeper brown from years of bending over plants. She dresses in fawn trousers and short sleeved shirts, though wears a cardigan in almost all weathers as she feels the cold. Behind her gold-rimmed glasses her eyes, deep brown, are thoughtful. Naturally vivacious, in recent years she's become accustomed to having mostly just her own company, and has an air of self-sufficiency. She's never without a paperback in her handbag and will read and enjoy a good book regardless of whether it's judged 'high-' or 'low-brow'.
