This Dark Age of Ours

It is summertime in the sunrise lands of the east, but living sure is not easy.
Because, see, the sun may be shining and the rain may be falling, and that may be great.
But lurking amidst the humming activity of the villages and their fields,
and hidden beneath the surface of the bustling cities and their markets,
there is a foul thing brewing.

See, summer may be the season for farming, and growing, and living. Sure.
But it is also the season for raiding, and killing, and war. Oh yes.
And it does not matter that you say no, or that you fight back, or that you build high walls to keep them out.
Because, see, nothing is unobtainable to the sword.
Not in this dark age of ours.

The Sunrise Lands

Introduction

This Dark Age of Ours is a small scale, early medieval, fantasy NRP. It is set in the sunrise lands of the east of a fictional world of comparable size and climate to Earth. It is summertime, which to the feudal mindset means war season, and the Kings and Queens of the land are preparing accordingly.

These are truly the dark ages of this world; the golden era of ancient civilizations collapsed a few hundred years ago or so, and much of what was once great has been for ever lost. Populations are declining, and the empires of old are all but broken and gone. What remains are petty kingdoms run by petty sovereigns, waging petty wars and plotting petty schemes against eachother. And all the while the people struggles, and progress seems to have come to a grinding halt.

Although this may be a fantasy game, the fantastic elements are to be kept grounded and sensible. Magic is a word for that which cannot be explained; it is not an awesome force of fireballs and levitation. There may be fantastic creatures in the hills and woods of the land, or even sentient humanoid beings other than man, but the rule of sensibility applies here also. No acid-spewing dragonborn or flying birdpeople shenanigans.

Application

Unlike some NRPs, this game will not be big on stats, or details. I do not want an in-depth description of your economy, or a full report of every unit in your army composition. What I want is to get the feel of your nation. Something that can ultimately be summarized in a single sentance; "Steppe horseman raiders from the west", "Religious goods peddlers from the riverlands", or maybe "Nomadic orc warriors from the northern highlands". Needless to say, I want you to write more than that, but about three to five paragraphs should be enough. Leave some room for development in the IC!

Hmm... A Nation RP that doesn't require me to come up with a complicated economy, that hasn't started already, with a simple but pleasant sounding premise? Consider me very much interested. I will have to think on matters of who and what, and would be welcome to any and all information regarding the world and its lore, or how flexible such things are for that matter.

Hi! Going to give this a shot as it seems the most simple game to get started with. I can post a writing sample if you want? I tried to keep it pretty basic as you requested in the OP. Not sure if this is a fantasy type game or more historical so I tried to make a mixture of both, leaning towards the historical.

Very interested in this idea if there are in fact fantasy races.

In fact, an orc horde in the highlands as you've mentioned.

@Taengrid That's perfect. I'd accept that app in a heartbeat.

It is a fantasy game, but not an epic one. Had you wanted to, for example, your people could have been orcs, or dwarves, or maybe even centaurs. Humans are very much welcome, though.

@neogreggory There's really no lore at all, at the moment. Just write what you have in mind and we'll discuss it.

Name: Grand Duchy of Chelodonia (Μεγαδουκᾶτον Χελοδονίας)

Location:

Demographics:
-Hellenes (Humans): majority population
-Amazzi: Viera-like humanoids (female-only "race"), non-native minority
-Centaurs: native minority, semi-autonomous nomads (inhabits the northern plains)

Climate: Mediterranean

Description:
The Grand Duchy of Chelodonia is one of the successor states of the human empire that had ruled the southern portion of the continent. Their capital, Chelodon, is located on the largest island of the southern coast, from where the Grand Duke (μέγας δούξ) controls the nearby peninsula. The Grand Duke, whose title was originally assigned to the highest ranking naval commander, used the loyalty of his soldiers to carve out a fief of his own once the old emperor's line was no more. As an island nation, the Chelonians rely on their navy to be their wall against invasions, although their land forces are nothing to be scoffed at.

However, Chelodonia has its own issues. The Centaur tribes that inhabit the northern plains, nominally under Chelodonian rule, have increased the intensity and frequency of their raids on neighboring states. Although the Chelodonian Grand Duke years ago have brokered a deal with the Centaur tribes, where an annual ritualistic Centauromachy replaces the damaging raids, it places the Chelodonians at an awkward position with its neighbors, who are still raided.

Furthermore, the non-indigenous Amazzi present their own unique issues to the Chelodonians. Long ago, some governors of the old empire had imported these rabbit-eared female humanoids from the far south, far from the empire's borders. Because of their nimble bodies and enhanced senses (including hearing), the old governors would employ the Amazzi as assassins and bodyguards (humans would still be employed as the brawn). When some were emancipated, the freed Amazzi started forming small communities, called Aiabas in whatever "Mediterranean" forests remained in the countryside. Nowadays, most of the Amazzi in Chelodonia live in these Aiabas, although they have to mingle with the human population to reproduce since they're a female only species. While the Amazzi population is still relatively small, who said that a silent knife can't raise up new kings?

@Dedonus Looks good to me. I would however like a little more information in general about these Viera. I recognize them from some FF game, but I don't know anything about them apart from the fact that they look like women with playboy bunny ears.

Name: Kingdom of Skræling

Location:

Demographics:
-Svellgotar (Humans): Majority of population
-Mikilalfr ("Light" or "Grassland" Elves): Minority, settled around the plains
-Jarnalfr ("Dark" or "Hill" Elves): Minority, settled in the hills or mountains
-Lyoralfr ("Half" Elf): Rare

Climate: Temperate and Alpine Tundra

Description:
The Kingdom of Skræling is nestled far in the northern part of the Sunrise Lands. Nestled beyond the high mountains in the north lays a very isolated populations of people. The Svellgotar natives are people of a culture made to brash the harshness of the climate to the north. Though their clan mentality has not allowed this "kingdom" to truly unite. Skræling is ruled under a single Hargramr or "High King" who sits upon the throne located from their clan's capital. The king is passed down to the first born son of the current King, but the title can be stripped or passed on to another clan if the current king is defeated in combat. This system has kept the clans in relative power to one another, but has disallowed any true unity amongst the many clans in the north.

On the exterior they mean seem brutish and cold like their homeland in the winters, they can also be much like their home in the spring and summer. They are a hearty and hardworking country known for its bounty of grains and potatoes which are a hardy vegetable and a key ingredient in their diet. Due to their location beyond the mountain and the only access into their lands being between valleys they are experts on the sea. Whether they be used to trade their goods along the coastline with the various kingdoms or if a clan is in dire need of food or currency they can easily launch raids that can devastate those along the coast, and be in and out as if they hadn't even been there.

Their relationship with their Elven neighbors is one embroiled in war, and in peace. They are currently in an age of peace with their fellow natives of the north. The elves passing on their knowledge of iron, music, and art with them. It is a wonderful sight to see Men and Elves singing along a communal village pyre passing around alcoholic beverages to one another.

Quick Question: If someone were to apply with a nation that could be described in 1 sentence as 'A kobold kingdom ruled by a lazy dragon' would you approve it?

I haven’t done a NRP in a very long time, this seems like the kind of thing I might be able to do.

@Inkarnate Also great, and accepted.

@rush99999 Probably, hinging of course on the execution of said application.

We're closing in on getting to the actual game here. An app or a few more and I'll start the thread.

What happens if you don't get the player pool you want? Aggressive discussion of the map?

I think the people of Skræling would be more than willing to 'discuss' the map with your people. :P

@Inkarnate I think we'll make do. I will submit a nation shortly, and with the current interest gathered we should cover most of the map. Even if we don't, we'll just consider the unoccupied zones as unclaimed barbarian land.

To-be-claimed elf land, you mean.
