Biography: Childhood: Tired of his family’s rejection of his wife and life in the city, Brendan McKenna and his wife Cathleen moved away from Dublin when Cathleen discovered she was pregnant. Brendan had known his wife was a witch from the day he met her. He didn’t mind, but others clearly did.
Ivy grew up on Beare island in Ireland, and spent most of her free time wandering around the island, or taking the cable car to Dursey island. She always seemed different from other children and preferred the company of animals and nature over that of humans. Her childhood was happy, and rather uneventful. Her parents loved each other, and adored her. She was not spoiled, but truly loved.
Her talent for transfiguration became evident very early on. As a two-year-old, she turned her sippy cup into a proper goblet. She wasn’t a baby anymore, after all! Mom recognized her talent and helped her control it as much as she could. Accidents did happen, children who picked on Ivy tended to find their toys mysteriously broken, but never anything too serious. The older Ivy got, the more she gained control.
Hogwarts: When Ivy got her letter, her parents were so proud! And when Ivy was sorted in to Gryffindor, her mother’s old house, the joy was complete. Ivy was a diligent student, who showed an aptitude for Potions and Care for Magical Creatures besides her obvious talent in Transfiguration. She also showed considerable talent for non-verbal spell casting, and won her share of duels in her time. Playful and adventurous, Ivy never made head girl, but was loved by many Gryffindors. Ravenclaws admired her devotion to her studies, and Hufflepuffs liked her for her loyalty and kindness. She didn’t have much patience for Slytherins, and that feeling was entirely mutual. Of course this got her in trouble on occasion, but that was something she just had to deal with.
After Hogwarts: Ivy studied on and became a registered animagus, her alter ego is a beagle, and applied for a position within the Ministry for Magic. Being a halfblood, Ivy opted to draw on her strong suits and her knowledge of the muggle world. She worked in the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts department for a number of years before returning to Hogwarts to teach Transfiguration two years ago. Ivy had considered refusing the Headmaster’s request, she considered herself too young to be a teacher, but had ultimately given in to the desire to be a part of that amazing institution.
Favorite Hogwarts Memory: When asked about her time at Hogwarts, two images instantly present themselves. Even if you’d put a gun to her head, Ivy wouldn’t be able to choose between them, though neither of them seem remarkably significant.
Ivy will never forget her first look at the castle that housed the school. Something about the way it stood there, illuminated only by the stars, the moon and a few torches made it seem like the most magical, homely place she had ever known. It appealed to her adventurous side, and she was filled with excitement and wonder, and instantly looked forward to all the adventures and lessons she’d be having in there.
Whenever Ivy thinks back on her days at Hogwarts, she remembers the time she spent with her friends. Hanging out in the common room, going to class, passing notes, sharing homework, secrets and family news, Ivy’s favourite memory of Hogwarts is simply how at home she felt there. How she felt like she belonged within these walls. That feeling, that’s why she said “yes” when the headmaster had asked her to come teach. Plain and simple.
