Dear all,

I am sure many of you will be aware of this, but in European Parliament, as of June 20, there was a vote to restrict all uses of fandom material on the internet. All memes, gif collections, parodies, fan art, and fanfics must be taken down. In other words: Fandom RPs will be illegal in Europe. I think we can all agree that this is ridiculous.

There is, however, a glimmer of hope: the next vote is in July 4-5 (depending on your time zone). This vote could be stopped. So I beg you, let's #Saveourinternet, and keep the ability to RP our favourite fandoms!

If you want more info, or to sign the petition to stop this, the link is here!

Thanks for your time,

Erk

How does one govern all websites on the internet, I wonder? It seems like an impossible law to enforce tbh.

@tex Yeah, I think they have no clue what they're really doing, or how they'll do it. It may not be mandatory to smaller sites (e.g. this one), but they're asking place like Tumblr to just police the platform. This is one of the reasons I don't think it'll get through, but judging from a lot of the political stuff in the news, anything is possible nowadays!

A well known problem is that government are typically ran by old farts. You know, the type we have in parliament here: who don't know what an I.P address is, but think they can run cybersecurity detail for a country regardless.

@Odin Here here! Maybe a few of them will realise it's a violation of people's right to privacy, but I think the majority who try to get it stopped will just think about how it's a severe logistical challenge. God, I hate politics.

Yeah, screw the EU.

But you may want to be concerned, because supposedly the EU insist on some kind of censorship tech that they don't realise is super expensive, and may cause quite a few platforms (like Tumblr or Reddit) to shut down. Take it or leave it.

@SleepingSilence Haha! I'm considering moving to Brussels, just to give them a piece of my mind.

It's not looking good for their fire department...

If it causes social “media” to die I am more than fine with that. I couldn’t care less if Reddit dies.

You are making me rethink my position.

It’s free just like the non toll roads are free. Only the least educated morons would think it’s free.

I dunno mang, Reddit and tumblr are both popular sources (tumblr moreso than Reddit, but Reddit has some gems) when it comes to roleplay images. If they go kaput then the search for the image you want might get harder, and it's not like only Reddit and tumblr will die. Lots of sites can be affected by this change. I'd rather not find out which ones by preventing it.
